Many diagnostic procedures are available. The main methods are briefly reviewed. Standard X-rays of the skull are always needed. In doubtful cases polytomography is essential. Bone scintigraphy reveals early signs of changes in the bony macrostructures. Brain scintigraphy is still very useful in observing 1. the blood-flow in both intracranial and intraorbital regions, and 2. the cranio-orbital distribution of the radiotracer. Regional cerebral blood flow (bicompartmental and stochastic method) was measured in a series of 20 patients with unilateral brain softening. Measurements were repeated during the administration of a vasodilator. A deterimental effect on the perfusion of the disease area was observed in the majority of cases. It has been shown that the chances for a vasodilator to decrease the perfusion in the diseased area were greater when the angiogram showed obstruction of an intracranial artery.

Myocardial imaging with intravenous thallium-201 (201Tl) was performed at rest and following maximal treadmill exercise in 101 patients with suspected coronary artery disease. Dysphagia may in rare instances be a presenting feature of unilateral cerebral lesions. Normally, bilateral lesions are necessary to cause neurological disturbance of swallowing but there appear to be occasional subjects where this is not so. We describe a case of hemiconvulsion-hemiplegia-epilepsy (HHE) syndrome documented by longitudinal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). A two-year and nine-month-old boy had a prolonged hemiconvulsion during fever followed by right hemiparesis. Seven days later the imaging abnormality on T2 and diffusion-weighted images (DWI) was limited to the white matter of the left hemisphere. One month later severe gliosis and unilateral brain atrophy were already evident. MRI is useful in the early stages of prolonged seizures and T2 and DWI abnormalities appear to be well correlated with parenchymal damage

A ten year old boy had six cutaneous angiomas and recurrent rectal bleeding responsible for iron deficiency anemia. Histological examination established the diagnosis of blue rubber bleb naevus syndrome. Endoscopy, arteriography, computed tomography, and angioscintigraphy disclosed additional angiomas in the stomach and rectum and along the blood vessels in the lower limbs. PURPOSE: This study tests the hypothesis that the absence of deep venous thrombosis (DVT) on lower extremity color-flow venous duplex examination (LECFD) combined with a non-high-probability ventilation/perfusion (V/Q) scanning results rules out pulmonary embolus (PE). The use of LECFD as a diagnostic aid for PE is based on data that show that 90% of PE originate from lower extremity DVT, and therefore on the assumption that PE cannot be present if DVT is not present as the source.
