BACKGROUND: Catatonia is a potentially life-threatening condition that is characterized by psychiatric and motor disturbances, such as negativism, hypomotility, bradykinesia, and unusual movements. The diagnosis is based on clinical examination and occurs in both pediatric and adult patients and is associated with an increased mortality. Catatonia is associated with psychiatric illnesses such as schizophrenia, major depression, encephalitis, and bipolar disorder. The physiopathology of catatonia is complex and not fully understood. There is an ongoing debate in the medical community whether ca

BACKGROUND: Alcohol or other drug (AOD) intoxication in minors is a public health challenge. We characterized underage patients admitted to an emergency department (ED) with acute, recreational AOD intoxication.
METHODS: We conducted a 5-year (2012 to 2016) analysis of minors admitted to the only hospital-based pediatric ED in an urban area. Episodes of AOD intoxication were selected using ICD-9-CM diagnostic codes. Sociodemographics, substance use and clinical characteristics, laboratory parameters, and discharge dispositions were collected through the revision of clinical charts.

INTRODUCTION: Treatment of narcolepsy-cataplexy is based on the use of different drugs that either stimulate or modify REM sleep, which makes it possible to improve the symptoms that characterise the disease.
AIM: To present the characteristics of sodium oxybate, a new drug that has been approved in the United States and in the European Union for use in treating narcolepsy-cataplexy; the main contribution made by this new agent is the possibility of acting on all the symptoms of the disease at the same time.

Habitual drug-seeking behavior is essential in the transition from recreational drug use to compulsive drug use and is regulated by the dopamine (DA) system of the dorsal striatum (DS). However, a comparative study of the two subtypes of DA receptors, D1 receptors (D1R) and D2 receptors (D2R), which have opposite regulatory functions, in habitual drug-seeking behavior is absent. Moreover, the effects of L-type calcium channels (LTCCs) and the subtypes Cav1.2 and Cav1.3, which are downstream of D1R and D2R, respectively, on habitual drug-seeking behavior have yet to be revealed. Therefore, base…

The rescheduling of cannabis from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration's current most restrictive (Schedule I) designation would be an important step for cannabis research and researchers. We are researchers who have experience with cannabis research in preclinical, clinical, and policy domains and who represent a range of social science disciplines (e.g., Psychology, History). In this commentary, we share our perspectives on the history, policies, challenges, and benefits of moving cannabis from the current Schedule I designation (similar to heroin) to the less restrictive Schedule III (s

Addiction is a chronic disease that has serious consequences, both in terms of public health and economy. Clear characteristics distinguish recreational and controlled use from addiction. Thus, today, addiction includes the notions of compulsive drug use, associated with a loss of control over consumption, leading to craving. When consumption is stopped, withdrawal symptoms may emerge: a negative emotional state, cognitive problems and physical symptoms with some products (alcohol and opiates, for example). Relapse episodes may occur during this withdrawal period, countering the negative effec

The case of a 22 year old woman with cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome (CHS) presenting as an eating disorder is described. The importance of recognizing chronic cannabis use as a cause of episodic vomiting is emphasized, given that CHS can be confused with self-induced purging and cyclic vomiting. This case was further complicated by the well-defined history of anorexia nervosa (binge-purge type), major depressive disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, migraine headache, and the initial denial of cannabis use. However, collateral history and a positive drug screen confirmed the diagnosis. Th

All human endeavors are associated with quantifiable risks. Knowledge of the risk is essential for personal health maintenance. Nontherapeutic use of psychoactive drugs poses an important danger to individual persons and society. What are the quantitative estimates of these risks? Are they acceptable?Because the basic mechanism of the toxic effect of alcohol or other drugs is unknown, deciding on acceptable risks is difficult. Based on current information, the recreational abuse of inhalants, hallucinogens, stimulants, narcotics and sedative-hypnotic drugs poses unacceptable individual and soc

Men who have sex with men college students in China face a high risk of HIV infection, yet evidence comparing uptake of different HIV testing modalities remains limited. Using data from three national cross-sectional surveys conducted between 2021 and 2023 among college students from 151 universities in 14 provinces, we examined HIV testing behaviors and associated factors among this population. Among 1,567 participants, 62.0% had ever tested for HIV, with self-testing more commonly reported than facility-based testing. Across testing modalities, recreational drug use during sexual activity, l…

Insomnia is a risk factor for new onset, exacerbation, and relapse of mental illness. The goal of this study was to examine the prevalence, … that age (p = 0.009), recent suicide attempt or ideation (P < 0.001), tobacco use (p = 0.024), and recreational drug use during the past month (p = 0.040) were significant predictors of insomnia severity. Insomnia was highly prevalent in this population. Identification and management of insomnia would be an important clinical goal in hospitalized psychiatric patients.

As cannabis use has legalized for medical and recreational use in several states, the medical community has become more aware of the drug's potential toxicities. First described in 2004, cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome is increasingly recognized as a cause of hospitalization among drug users. However, little information is available in the medical literature regarding electrolyte abnormalities in this syndrome. Between 2011 and 2014, six men were treated for cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in San Diego, CA, and found to have significant hypophosphatemia

With the legalization of recreational marijuana in many states, we anticipate more women will be using and self-reporting marijuana use in pregnancy. Marijuana is the most common illicit drug used in pregnancy, with a prevalence of use ranging from 3% to 30% in various populations. Marijuana freely crosses the placenta and is found in breast milk. It may have adverse effects on both perinatal outcomes and fetal neurodevelopment. Specifically, marijuana may be associated with fetal growth restriction, stillbirth, and preterm birth. However, data are far from uniform regarding adverse perinatal

Becker and Murphy's (1988) theory of rational behavior suggests that economic factors play an influential role in the decision leading to drug consumption and possibly dependence. Psychological models, on the other hand, emphasize internal regulatory cues that motivate drug use and play a contributory role in dependence. Until now, the confluence of both economic and psychological models has not been tested empirically. The present study used latent-variable structural equation modeling (SEM) to examine the influence of both economic (social anomie, unit price, and time spent acquiring drugs)

BACKGROUND: Although hyperthermia is described after cocaine intoxication, the two hyperthermic cases discussed were unusual in severity and duration for cocaine alone. Synephrine was found in biological samples of these patients in high concentrations and was suspected to be an adulterant in illicitly obtained drugs.
CASE REPORT: Two patients presented to a tertiary care university hospital within 2 days of each other after recreational drug use with delayed and protracted hyperthermia. Synephrine was later found in high concentrations in biological samples as an unexpected drug adulterant. …
