L-Cys-Assisted Conversion of H2/CO2 to Biochemicals Using Clostridium ljungdahlii.

Carbon fixation and conversion based on Clostridium ljungdahlii have great potential for the sustainable production of biochemicals (i.e., 2,3-butanediol, acetic acid, and ethanol). Here, the effects of reducing agents on the production of biochemicals from H2/CO2 using C. ljungdahlii were studied. It was found that the element S and reducing power could significantly affect the production of biochemicals, and cysteine (Cys) was better than sodium sulfide for the production of biochemicals, especially for the production of 2,3-butanediol. Moreover, comparing to the control (i.e., without the a…

Natural Products as Modulators of ABC Transporters in Breast Cancer.

Breast cancer remains a significant global health challenge, with high incidence and mortality rates despite advancements in early detection and treatment. Multidrug resistance (MDR), particularly in aggressive subtypes like triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), continues to hinder effective therapy. MDR is primarily driven by the overexpression of ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters such as P-gp, BCRP, and MRP1. ABC transporters actively efflux chemotherapeutic agents, reducing their efficacy and complicating treatment outcomes. This narrative review explores the potential of natural prod

Combination therapy with coenzyme Q10 and creatine produces additive neuroprotective effects in models of Parkinson's and Huntington's diseases.

Coenzyme Q(10) (CoQ(10)) and creatine are promising agents for neuroprotection in neurodegenerative diseases via their effects on improving mitochondrial function and cellular bioenergetics and their properties as antioxidants. We examined whether a combination of CoQ(10) with creatine can exert additive neuroprotective effects in a MPTP mouse model of Parkinson's disease, a 3-NP rat model of Huntington's disease (HD) and the R6/2 transgenic mouse model of HD. The combination of the two agents produced additive neuroprotective effects against dopamine depletion in the striatum and loss of tyro

Activation of NMDA receptors plays an important role in cyanide neurotoxicity. Cyanide indirectly activates the receptor by inducing neurona … receptor redox sites, had no effect on the response to cyanide. On the other hand, the nonpermeant reducing agents, dithiothreitol or cysteine, further increased the cyanide effect. These observations can be explained by cyanide interacting with redox sensitive disulfide groups that are not accessible to the non-permeant reducing agents. It is proposed that cyan …

Efficacy of the topical skin protectant in advanced development.

A topical skin protectant (TSP) (ICD 2289) is being developed to protect service members from exposure to chemical warfare agents (CWA). The TSP is designed for use on the skin at the overgarment closures and other vulnerable areas to enhance protection. The TSP, which is in phase II clinical studies, is a cream containing two chemically inert substances: perfluoroalkylpolyether and polytetrafluoroethylene. Animal data showed that the TSP was effective against percutaneous penetration of a blister agent, sulfur mustard (HD), by reducing the size of skin lesions and against T-2 mycotoxin by pre

Modification of cysteine residues in vitro and in vivo affects the immunogenicity and antigenicity of major histocompatibility complex class I-restricted viral determinants.

In studying the subdominant status of two cysteine-containing influenza virus nuclear protein (NP) determinants (NP39-47 and NP218-226) restricted by H-2Kd, we found that the antigenicity of synthetic peptides was enhanced 10-100-fold by treatment with reducing agents, despite the fact that the affinity for Kd was not enhanced. Reducing agents also markedly enhanced the immunogenicity of cysteine-containing peptides, as measured by propagation of long-term T cell lines in vitro. Similar enhancing effects were obtained by substituting cysteine with alanine or serine in the synthetic peptides, d…

Vitamins and cancer chemoprevention.

Chemoprevention is in an area of cancer research with perhaps the greatest potential for reducing cancer mortality. Several agents, and in particular antioxidant vitamins, appear to be effective against early rather than later steps of the premalignant process at different sites. Particular attention must be paid to possible side effects and safety of the agents and to optimal doses in long-term administration regimens. The results of numerous trials on the preventive role of vitamins (e.g. beta-carotene, retinols, retinoids, alpha-tocopherol, ascorbic acid, folic acid) are contradictory and f

Sensory, parasympathetic, and sympathetic neural influences in the nasal mucosa.

Neural mechanisms contribute to many nasal symptoms and syndromes. Sensory nerve stimulation by irritants, mast cell products, and inflammatory mediators leads to sneezing and other systemic reflexes. Parasympathetic reflexes and sensory axon responses combine to increase nasal blood flow, fill venous sinusoids (which thickens the mucosa and reduces nasal patency), induce plasma extravasation, and stimulate glandular secretion of mucous and serous cell products. These putative roles for nerves and neuropeptides in pathologic events open new therapeutic avenues. Anticholinergic agents, peptide

Occupational biohazards: a review.

There are at least 193 important biological agents that show infectious, allergenic, toxic, or carcinogenic activities in the working population. These agents are viruses, bacteria, fungi, plant substances, invertebrate animals (mostly arthropods), and substances derived from vertebrate animals. At least 20 large occupational groups are exposed to these biohazards. The risk is greatest among health care and laboratory workers who are threatened by human pathogens and among agricultural workers who are at risk from dust-borne biological allergens and toxins and by parasitic worms in warm climat
