The Development of Retinal Function and Refractive Error in Children With Retinopathy of Prematurity.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) prolongs development of rod-mediated thresholds for detection of stimuli at 10 degrees but not 30 degrees eccentricity. In addition, to evaluate the thresholds at each site for an association with visual acuity (VA) and spherical equivalent (SE). METHODS: We estimated rod-mediated dark-adapted thresholds (DATs) for the detection of 2 degree diameter, 50 ms, blue (λ < 510 nm) flashes at 10 degrees and 30 degrees eccentric in former preterm subjects (n = 111), stratified by ROP severity: None (n

Intraocular Lens Power Calculations in Eyes with Previous Corneal Refractive Surgery: Review and Expert Opinion.

Intraocular lens (IOL) power calculations are less accurate in eyes that have undergone corneal refractive surgery. A wide range of methods have been proposed. We reviewed the methods and outcomes of IOL power calculations in eyes with previous LASIK, excimer laser photorefractive keratectomy (PRK), or radial keratotomy (RK). The PubMed database was searched for articles that (1) discuss methods and outcomes of IOL power calculation in eyes with previous corneal refractive surgery and (2) evaluate the outcomes of toric, multifocal, or extended depth-of-focus (EDOF) IOLs in these eyes. We exclu

Corneal Topography for Intraocular Lens Selection in Refractive Cataract Surgery.

The purpose of this review is to evaluate the usefulness of corneal topography to select premium intraocular lenses (IOLs), including aspherical IOLs, toric IOLs, and multifocal IOLs, in refractive cataract surgery. Corneal topography can detect corneal regular astigmatism, corneal irregular astigmatism (higher-order aberrations [HOAs]) including spherical aberration, and corneal shape abnormalities after corneal refractive surgery. Surgeons can explain to the patients with significant corneal HOAs about its effect on postoperative visual function before surgery. Multifocal IOLs should not be

Optical Aberrations of Guinea Pig Eyes.

PURPOSE: The guinea pig is widely used in studies of refractive error development and myopia which often involve experimental optical manipulations. The study described here investigated the optical quality of the guinea pig eye, for which there are limited data, despite its fundamental importance to understanding visually guided eye growth. METHODS: The ocular aberrations of eight adolescent New Zealand pigmented guinea pigs (6-11 weeks old) were measured after cycloplegia using a custom-built Shack-Hartmann aberrometer and fit with a Zernike polynomial function to the 10th order (65 terms).

The effect of instrument alignment on peripheral refraction measurements by automated optometer.

PURPOSE: Interest in peripheral refraction measurement has grown in recent years in response to the insight it may provide into myopia development. In light of the likely increase in the clinical use of open-field autorefractors for peripheral refraction measurements, the question of instrument alignment and its impact on the accuracy of refraction measurements is raised. The aim of this study was to investigate the accuracy and precision when an open-field device was moved away from alignment with the corneal reflex towards the pupil margins, and to determine the optimum alignment position fo
