Time to resolution of contact lens-induced corneal warpage prior to refractive surgery.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the resolution of contact lens-induced corneal warpage before keratorefractive surgery. METHODS: We prospectively studied the eyes of 165 consecutive contact lens-wearing patients evaluated for keratorefractive surgery. Significant contact lens-induced corneal warpage was detected by comeal topography in 20 eyes of 11 patients. Manifested refraction, keratometry, and cornea topography were subsequently recorded during weekly or biweekly reevaluations and were compared with previous measurements for stability. Effects of age, sex, type, and duration of contact-lens wear an

The effects of refractive status on the outcomes of strabismus surgery in patients with esotropia.

BACKGROUND: The success of the strabismus surgery can hinge on several factors. One of these factors is refractive condition like hyperopia or myopia. Our study seeks to evaluate the surgical outcomes in patients with esotropia and myopia. METHODS: This case-control study encompassed all surgical cases of esotropia at Torfe and Negah Hospital between 2016 and 2021, which satisfied our specified inclusion criteria. The initial variables from electronic medical records were collected, including demographic, clinical, and surgery-related factors. At the final follow-up appointment, the level of

Comparison of real-world treatment outcomes of femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery and phacoemulsification cataract surgery: A retrospective, observational study from an outpatient clinic in France.

PURPOSE: This study compared real-world safety and efficacy outcomes of cataract surgery performed with LenSx femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery or manual phacoemulsification cataract surgery procedures. METHODS: A retrospective observational study used data from anonymised electronic medical records to compare mean cumulative dissipated energy, the proportion of eyes reaching emmetropia, mean change in best-corrected distance visual acuity and the proportion of eyes with post-surgical complications, including corneal oedema and posterior capsule opacification. Results were adjusted

Q-value individualized CLEAR lenticule extraction preserves corneal asphericity and minimizes spherical aberration while maintaining optical zone predictability.

Refractive surgery enhances visual performance by reshaping the cornea. At the same time, optical aberrations typically increase, affecting visual quality. An essential factor for minimizing the induction of optical aberrations after refractive surgery is the preservation of corneal asphericity. To address this challenge, corneal lenticule extraction for advanced refractive correction (CLEAR) considers individual Q-values to generate an aspheric laser resection profile. This study aims to evaluate the effect of CLEAR on corneal asphericity, spherical aberration and optical zone diameter. Sixty

Correction of postkeratoplasty astigmatism by femtosecond laser compared with mechanized astigmatic keratotomy.

PURPOSE: To compare the effectiveness of arcuate keratotomy (AK) performed with a femtosecond laser (FSL) or Hanna keratome (Moria, Anthony, France) for correction of postkeratoplasty astigmatism. DESIGN: Prospective, randomized study. METHODS: This clinical study included 20 eyes. Two groups of 10 eyes underwent AK using an FLS or keratome. Refractive and keratometric astigmatism were evaluated before surgery and 6 months after surgery. The astigmatic changes in the 2 groups were measured through arithmetic and vector analysis (Alpins method). RESULTS: Six months after surgery, the mean un

PURPOSE: To assess the outcomes of laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) after penetrating keratoplasty (PKP). SETTING: Hospital de Clínicas de Porto Alegre, Department of Ophthalmology, Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, Porto Alegre, RS, Brazil. METHODS: Fourteen eyes of 13 patients who had LASIK after PKP were retrospectively reviewed. A Novel Concept of Correcting Presbyopia: First Clinical Results with a Phakic Diffractive Intraocular Lens.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect of a novel technique to correct presbyopia. A phakic IOL (presbyopic IPCL; implantable phakic contact lens) with a diffractive optic is implanted and its impact on visual acuity, refraction, patient satisfaction in patients striving for spectacle-independence is evaluated. DESIGN: Retrospective noncomparative open-label clinical trial. METHODS: Sixteen eyes of 8 patients (average age 47 years) had a presbyopic IPCL implanted in the posterior chamber. Preloaded refractive-addition corneal inlay to compensate for presbyopia implanted using a femtosecond laser: one-year visual outcomes and safety.

PURPOSE: To report the results of the Icolens corneal inlay 12 months after implantation. SETTING: Department of Refractive Surgery, Mater Private Hospital, Dublin, Ireland. DESIGN: Prospective case series. METHODS: The inlay was implanted in the nondominant eye of emmetropic patients through a femtosecond laser-created corneal pocket. RESULTS: The mean uncorrected near visual acuity (UNVA) in the surgical eye (n = 52) improved from N18/N24 preoperatively to N8 postoperatively (P = .000); all patients had a UNVA of N16 or better and 9 (17%), of N5 or better. Deep learning models for predicting opaque bubble layer morphology of keratorefractive lenticule extraction before laser scanning.

PURPOSES: To develop deep learning (DL) models for predicting opaque bubble layer (OBL) morphology and area before femtosecond laser scanning in keratorefractive lenticule extraction (KLEx) procedures. METHODS: A total of 10276 frames from 5138 KLEx surgical videos, involving 2698 patients, were used to construct and validate the DL models. Suction-initiated frames captured before laser scanning were used as input to construct an OBL perceptual attention network (OBLPA-Net) and a DL-based OBL prediction regression model, which were developed to predict the OBL morphology and area in posterior

Cataract surgery with endothelial keratoplasty.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review aims to provide an updated summary of the combined approach of cataract surgery with endothelial keratoplasty (EK), addressing key considerations, including intraocular lens (IOL) choice and calculation, decision between sequential and triple EK, and modifications in surgical techniques and postoperative management. RECENT FINDINGS: Advances in imaging techniques (Scheimpflug tomography and anterior segment optical coherence tomography) have improved the ability to detect subclinical corneal edema, aiding in surgical decision-making for EK. Recent studies compar

Comparison of penetrating femtosecond laser-assisted astigmatic keratotomy and toric intraocular lens implantation for correction of astigmatism in cataract surgery.

This study tried to compare the clinical outcomes of femtosecond laser-assisted astigmatic keratotomy (FSAK) and toric intraocular lens (IOL) implantation for astigmatism correction and identify factors affecting the efficacy of FSAK and toric IOL implantation in astigmatism correction. This retrospective case series comprised patients with corneal astigmatism ranging between 0.5 D and 4.5 D. Patients underwent FSAK or toric IOL implantation for cataract treatment and correction of astigmatism at the Samsung Medical Center, a tertiary surgical center, between April 2016 and December 2018. Long-term comparison of fibrin tissue glue and vicryl suture in conjunctival autografting for pterygium surgery.

PURPOSE: Pterygium is a common clinical entity that usually causes visual impairment, astigmatism and cosmetic problems. Although many surgical techniques to treat pterygium have been proposed, no single method, with minimal patient complications, has yet been accepted and established. Excision combined with conjunctival autograft is the most often used procedure for the treatment of primary pterygium, and the technique is associated with minimized recurrence rates in patients. The purpose of our study was to compare visual and refractive outcomes, complications, and recurrence rates with the
