Cognitive-existential group psychotherapy for women with primary breast cancer: a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: We conducted a randomised, controlled trial of cognitive-existential group therapy (CEGT) for women with early stage breast cancer receiving adjuvant chemotherapy with the aim of improving mood and mental attitude to cancer. METHODS: Women were randomised to 20 sessions of weekly group therapy plus 3 relaxation classes or to a control arm receiving 3 relaxation classes. Assessments, independently done at baseline, 6 and 12 months, included a structured psychiatric interview and validated questionnaires covering mood, attitudes to cancer, family relationships, and satisfaction with

Efficacy of Yoga Nidra on Depression, Anxiety, and Insomnia in Frontline COVID-19 Healthcare Workers: A Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial.

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a surge of mental health disturbances and the subsequent use of various mind-body therapies. Although evidence supports the benefits of yoga for mental health in a variety of disease states, information on its effects among healthcare workers during the COVID-19 epidemic is scarce. Therefore, this study evaluated and compared the efficacy of relaxation to music and yoga nidra on the mental health of frontline healthcare workers during the pandemic. This open-label randomized trial was conducted at a Level III COVID-19 care center. In the Relaxation-to-Music Gro

EGFR/IGF1R Signaling Modulates Relaxation in Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy.

BACKGROUND: Diastolic dysfunction is central to diseases such as heart failure with preserved ejection fraction and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). However, therapies that improve cardiac relaxation are scarce, partly due to a limited understanding of modulators of cardiomyocyte relaxation. We hypothesized that cardiac relaxation is regulated by multiple unidentified proteins and that dysregulation of kinases contributes to impaired relaxation in patients with HCM. METHODS: We optimized and increased the throughput of unloaded shortening measurements and screened a kinase inhibitor library

Failure of Ventricular Fibrillation Sensing During Subcutaneous Implantable Defibrillator Testing: A Twitchy Situation.

Oversensing of extra-cardiac noise may inhibit delivery of subcutaneous cardiac implantable defibrillator (S-ICD) therapy. We report a case of diaphragmatic tetany resulting in the inhibition of S-ICD therapy at the time of defibrillator testing without the use of muscle relaxants. Clinicians should be aware of this phenomenon.

Managing emotional distress in older adults with mental illness: a randomized controlled trial evaluating virtual reality relaxation.

Virtual reality (VR) relaxation offers an innovative, immersive approach to managing negative emotions. Such digital therapies represent a promising, growing field in mental health care but remain under-researched in older populations - a group in critical need of scalable, engaging treatments. We conducted a randomized controlled trial to evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of VR-based relaxation compared to guided imagery (treatment-as-usual) in older adults with mental illness. 44 older psychiatric patients (aged 58-98) were randomized into either VR or guided imagery (GI). In total,

Preservation of immune function in cervical cancer patients during chemoradiation using a novel integrative approach.

Patients receiving chemoradiation for cervical cancer are at risk for distress, chemoradiation-related side-effects, and immunosuppression. This prospective randomized clinical trial examined effects of a complementary therapy, Healing Touch (HT), versus relaxation training (RT) and usual care (UC) for (1) supporting cellular immunity, (2) improving mood and quality of life (QOL), and (3) reducing treatment-associated toxicities and treatment delay in cervical cancer patients receiving chemoradiation. Sixty women with stages IB1 to IVA cervical cancer were randomly assigned to receive UC or 4

Diaphragmatic breathing during virtual reality exposure therapy for aviophobia: functional coping strategy or avoidance behavior? a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Although there is solid evidence for the efficacy of in vivo and virtual reality (VR) exposure therapy for a specific phobia, there is a significant debate over whether techniques promoting distraction or relaxation have impairing or enhancing effects on treatment outcome. In the present pilot study, we investigated the effect of diaphragmatic breathing (DB) as a relaxation technique during VR exposure treatment. METHOD: Twenty-nine patients with aviophobia were randomly assigned to VR exposure treatment either with or without diaphragmatic breathing (six cycles per minute). Subje

Treatment outlines for the management of anxiety states. The Quality Assurance Project.

The Quality Assurance Project is developing explicit and detailed treatment outlines for each of the major psychiatric disorders. Three sources of information are used: a meta-analysis of the treatment outcome literature, the opinions of a sample of practising psychiatrists, and the views of a panel of nominated experts. The recommendations for the treatment of anxiety states were as follows: Phenelzine and then the tricyclic antidepressants were the treatments of choice for panic disorder. Behaviour therapy--cognitive anxiety management, relaxation and hyperventilation control--being recommen

Relaxation intervention to improve diabetic foot ulcer healing: Results from a pilot randomized controlled study.

This pilot randomised controlled study (RCT) aimed to assess the feasibility and acceptability of a progressive muscle relaxation with guided imagery intervention (experimental group [EG]) compared to a neutral guided imagery placebo (active control group [ACG]) and standard care to diabetic foot ulcer [DFU] treatment (passive control group [PCG]), to decide on the need for a definitive RCT. Diabetic foot patients with one or two chronic DFU and significant levels of stress/anxiety/depression were recruited and assessed during a period of 6 months, at three moments. Primary outcomes: feasibili

[Summarising the efficiency of psychological interventions in the treatment of endometriosis].

Endometriosis is a common gynecological disease affecting 5-10% of women resulting in several psychological impacts. Regarding the high prevalence as well as extensive somatic symptoms, this has become a growing issue of psychological research in recent years. Thanks to its rising importance the negative effect on quality of life, mood, and anxiety symptoms has been proven. Thus we aimed to organize psychological interventions affecting the mentioned constructs and also examine their efficiency and scientific standards. Our inclusion criteria referred to studies based on randomized controlled

Pilates based core stability training in ambulant individuals with multiple sclerosis: protocol for a multi-centre randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: People with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) frequently experience balance and mobility impairments, including reduced trunk stability. Pilates-based core stability training, which is aimed at improving control of the body's stabilising muscles, is popular as a form of exercise with people with MS and therapists. A replicated single case series study facilitated by the Therapists in MS Group in the United Kingdom (UK) provides preliminary evidence that this approach can improve balance and mobility in ambulant people with MS; further evidence is needed to substantiate these findings to ensu

[Migraine in 2009: from attack to treatment].

Migraine is Europe and North America's most frequent neurological illness. Its prevalence is about 12%, affecting women twice more than men. Migraine illness is defined by the occurrence of several episodes of pulsatile headaches, uni- or bilateral, accompanied or preceded by signs of central and autonomic nervous system dysfunction. Considered benign, it can lead to non negligible social and professional handicap. Its social and economic repercussions are serious, due to consequences in terms of work incapacity. Essentially relying on drugs, therapeutic divides itself into migraine attack tre

The efficacy of mindfulness-based stress reduction in the treatment of sleep disturbance in women with breast cancer: an exploratory study.

OBJECTIVE: The diagnosis of breast cancer, the most common type of cancer among American women, elicits greater distress than any other diagnosis regardless of prognosis. Therefore, the present study examined the efficacy of a stress reduction intervention for women with breast cancer. METHODS: As part of a larger, randomized, controlled study of the effects on measures of stress of a mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) intervention for women with breast cancer, the current analyses examined the effects on sleep complaints. RESULTS: Analyses of the data indicated that both MBSR and a f

Premeditated assaults on young boys by a man with spina bifida and hydrocephalus--a cognitive-behavioural approach to treatment.

This paper describes the case of a 25-year-old man with spina bifida and hydrocephalus, who had at least a ten-year history of physically assaulting young boys. Anti-social behaviour is reported as comparatively rare in people with this disability, and the case study illustrates how psychological assessment and treatment techniques were successfully applied. Information from his personal history plus a functional analysis of the assaults suggested that a combination of existing psychological difficulties and learning experiences contributed to the development of his behaviour. A behavioural mo

Effects of the manual laryngeal musculoskeletal tension reduction technique as a treatment for functional voice disorders: perceptual and acoustic measures.

During a 2-year period, 17 patients with "functional dysphonia" were assessed and managed in a hospital setting. A single treatment approach, known as manual laryngeal musculoskeletal tension reduction, was employed. The effects of the therapy regimen were analyzed using perceptual and acoustical measures of vocal function. The results indicated a significant change in the direction of "normal" vocal function in the majority of patients within one treatment session. Perceptual measures of severity were consistently more likely to be rated as normal following treatment. Acoustic measures of voi
