Repeated Restraint Stress Decreases Na,K-ATPase Activity via Oxidative and Nitrosative Damage in the Frontal Cortex of Rats.

Chronic psychogenic stress can increase neuronal calcium influx and generate the intracellular accumulation of oxidative (ROS) and nitrosative (RNS) reactive species, disrupting synaptic transmission in the brain. These molecules impair the Na,K-ATPase (NKA) activity, whose malfunction has been related to neuropsychiatric disorders, including anxiety, depression, schizophrenia, and neurodegenerative diseases. In this study, we assessed how 14 days of restraint stress in rats affect NKA activity via oxidative/nitrosative damage in the frontal cortex (FCx), a crucial region for emotional and cog

Effect of foot and ankle immobilization on able-bodied gait as a model to increase understanding about bilateral transtibial amputee gait.

BACKGROUND: The anatomical foot-ankle complex facilitates advancement of the stance limb through foot rockers and late-stance power generation during walking, but this mechanism is altered for persons with bilateral transtibial amputation when using passive prostheses. OBJECTIVES: To study the effects of bilateral foot and ankle immobilization on able-bodied gait to serve as a model for understanding gait of persons with bilateral transtibial amputation and associated compensatory mechanisms. STUDY DESIGN: Comparative analysis. METHODS: Nine able-bodied persons walked at self-selected slow,

Walking age of infants with idiopathic clubfoot treated using the ponseti method.

BACKGROUND: The Ponseti method is an established approach to treating idiopathic clubfoot in infants. The method involves a period of cast immobilization and postcorrective bracing that potentially interferes with normal movements of the lower extremities. In the present study, we investigated the age at which infants who had idiopathic clubfoot treated using the Ponseti method achieved independent walking. METHODS: We prospectively evaluated patients of a single surgeon. Included in the study were all patients with idiopathic clubfoot who were full term at birth, were no more than twelve wee

Allopregnanolone's attenuation of the lordosis-inhibiting effects of restraint is blocked by the antiprogestin, CDB-4124.

A brief restraint experience reduces lordosis behavior in ovariectomized females that have been hormonally primed with estradiol benzoate. The addition of progesterone to the priming prevents the lordosis inhibition. Based on prior studies with an inhibitor of progesterone metabolism, we have implicated the intracellular progesterone receptor, rather than progesterone metabolites, as responsible for this protection. However, the progesterone metabolite, allopregnanolone (3α-hydroxy-5α-pregnan-20-one), also prevents lordosis inhibition after restraint. In a prior study, we reported that the pro

Effectiveness of bracing in the treatment of nonosseous restriction of elbow mobility: a systematic review and meta-analysis of 13 studies.

BACKGROUND: Restriction of elbow mobility is a very frequent complaint after trauma or surgery. The objective of this study was to assess and compare the effectiveness of dynamic, static, or static-progressive bracing in patients with elbow stiffness of traumatic or postoperative origin and without evidence of ossification. For the purpose of this study, effectiveness was measured as the increase in total range of motion, as well as extension and flexion. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed a systematic search of the keywords "elbow AND (stiffness OR stiff) AND (brace OR splint OR conservativ

Effects of a gait training session combined with a mass on the non-paretic lower limb on locomotion of hemiparetic patients: a randomized controlled clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Results of recent studies have suggested that restraint of non-paretic lower limb movement could improve locomotion in hemiplegic patients. The aim of this study was therefore to determine if a mass applied to the non-paretic lower limb during a single gait training session (GTS) would specifically improve spatio-temporal, kinematic and kinetic gait parameters (GP) of the paretic lower limb. METHODS: Sixty chronic hemiplegic subjects were included in this randomized study. Each participated in one of four GTS conditions: overground or on a treadmill while wearing or not wearing an

[Sudden deaths by hobble restraint of severely hyperactive persons].

Cardiac arrest may occur while persons are being kept in hobble restraint. It has been suggested that asphyxia caused by the restraint position, so-called restraint asphyxia, is the cause, but experimental evidence has not confirmed this theory. Some of the sudden deaths are associated with excited delirium syndrome (EDS), an acute condition characterized by a hyperactive, combative behaviour in individuals, who are influenced by psychoactive drugs or suffer from psychiatric illness. Autopsy findings fail to explain this type of deaths. The pathophysiology of EDS is complex and poorly understo

Computed tomographic imaging of dogs with primary laryngeal or tracheal airway obstruction.

Seventeen dogs with clinical signs attributable to nonneoplastic obstruction of the larynx, trachea, or large bronchi underwent computed tomography (CT) imaging. In 16 of the 17 dogs, CT was performed without general anesthesia using a positioning device. Fifteen of these 16 dogs were imaged without sedation or general anesthesia. Three-dimensional (3D) internal rendering was performed on each image set based on lesion localization determined by routine image planes. Visual laryngeal examination, endoscopy, video fluoroscopy, and necropsy were used for achieving the cause of the upper airway o

Pinch-induced behavioral inhibition ('clipnosis') in domestic cats.

Research has documented immobilization of rodents, rabbits, guinea pigs and dogs by mechanical means, typically using neck clips or inversion ('animal hypnosis'). In contrast, only a few studies of mechanical immobilization of cats are available, although some success has been reported in the literature. Domestic cats may be effectively immobilized by clips placed along the animal's dorsum. We use the term 'pinch-induced behavioral inhibition' (PIBI) for this behavior because it describes both the method and the response, while avoiding the more anthropomorphic term 'hypnosis'. We investigated

Changes in baseline and stress-induced glucocorticoid levels during the active period in free-ranging male and female little brown myotis, Myotis lucifugus (Chiroptera: Vespertilionidae).

Baseline and stress-responsive glucocorticoid (GC) levels were characterized during the active period in free-ranging male and reproductive female little brown myotis (Myotis lucifugus). Bats were trapped and blood was sampled within 3 min of capture at two maternity sites during the summer and at one swarming site prior to hibernation in New England. Both GC hormones, cortisol and corticosterone, were detected, with cortisol accounting for an average of approximately 95% of total circulating GCs. Samples collected at the dusk emergence and after the first return from feeding showed significan

Effects of restraint stress in gestation: implications for rodent developmental toxicology studies.

Restraint has been used as a procedure to study the effects of stress on gestation outcome in rodents. The effects of restraint could potentially be used as a model for the impact of general stress produced by high doses of toxicants and other interventions. In mice, restraint in the peri-implantation period leads to implantation failure, and restraint at appropriate times in organogenesis produces cleft palate, supernumerary ribs, and resorption. In rats, there is some evidence for an association with restraint for implantation failure, but not for the morphological anomalies. Restraint in la

[Compensatory changes in the acid-base balance under the influence of excess ammonium chloride, hypodynamia and stress].

Two variants of alternative integrative compensatory mechanisms of metabolic reactions in organism developing at the compensated shifts of acid-base balance under the influence of different risk factors have been discovered by the authors. Compensated metabolic acidosis appears with the excess of salt ammonia in the animals ration, at the immobilization stress, hypodynamia, deafferentation and surgical stress. The start reaction of acidosis is lipolysis activation and nonacidified products accumulation at the reactions of tricarboxylic acid cycle are (TAC) inhibited. The compensatory mechanism

[Melatonin and ubiquinone as endogenous antioxidant factors].

We studied the effect of restraint stress upon the degree of lipidic peroxidation in the fronto-temporal cerebral cortex, diencephalon, thymus and gastric mucosa. We determined the malon-dialdehyde (MDA) by spectrocolorimetry, the percentage of animals with stress gastric ulcer and the surface of gastric ulcerations. The results demonstrated an important increase of the MDA correlated with frequency and intensity of the gastric ulcer. In the second stage of the experiment, we studied the influence of the ubiquinone and melatonin on the same parameters studied in the first part. In every struct

Noradrenergic mechanisms in the central amygdalar nucleus and gastric stress ulcer formation in rats.

Microinjections of noradrenaline (NA, 0.3, 3.0 and 30.0 micrograms) into the central amygdalar nucleus (CEA) produced dose-related attenuations of cold restraint (3 h at 4 degrees C) induced gastric ulcer formation in rats. On the other hand, stress ulcer aggravating effects were seen with beta-adrenoceptor antagonist, propranolol (10 micrograms) but not with the alpha-adrenoceptor antagonist, prazosin (1 and 10 micrograms). Moderate enhancements of gastric stress lesions were also seen with the NA release inhibitor clonidine (1 microgram) and the neurotoxin DSP-4 (25 micrograms). Further, pre

[Participation of the endogenous opioid system in the formation of the body's response to stress].

Autonomic responses to acute stressors in unanesthetized, chair-restrained baboons and macacas include elevations in heart rate, blood pressure and respiratory rate. Naloxone, in a dose of 1.0 mg/kg intravenously, as well as morphine (1.0 mg/kg) suppresses autonomic alterations produced by the introduction of conditioned and unconditioned stimuli. When given in a dose of 0.1 mg/kg, naloxone, on the contrary, facilitates autonomic responses. The autonomic changes induced by electrical stimulation of the medial hypothalamus and nucleus tractus solitarius are influenced by naloxone--in both doses

Thermal and metabolic responses of repetitively immobilized rats to acute heat exposure.

Repetitively immobilized rats (3 hr/day, 4 weeks) exhibited less increase in the colonic temperature during acute heat exposure at 38 degrees C for 60 min. The magnitude of increase in oxygen consumption during heat exposure did not differ between the controls and the stressed rats. The results suggest that an immobilization stress could develop cross adaptation to heat, possibly by means of enhanced heat dissipating capacity.

Hemograms and microscopic lesions of herring gulls during captivity.

Herring gulls (Larus argentatus) kept in captivity for a maximum of 28 days developed marked heterophilia and nonregenerative anemia. These hematologic findings remained abnormal throughout captivity. Concurrently, severe amyloid deposition was seen in vessel walls of the spleen and in other tissues, and vacuolar degeneration of catecholamine-producing cells of the adrenal glands was found in gulls necropsied at various intervals. Behavioral signs of stress were seen in the early stages of captivity, but were not seen in most gulls after day 3. Clinical signs referable to the microscopic lesio

[Changes in the catecholamine content in adrenaline-synthetizing structures of the medulla oblongata in rats with different reactions to long-term immobilization].

Substantial individual variations of some indices studied were found as a result of comparing catecholamine changes after 6.5-hours' immobilization at A1 and A2 regions of Wistar rat oblongata and in the solitary tract nucleus with abnormal arterial blood pressure and stomach mucosa. The most pronounced catecholamine alterations, manifesting in epinephrine level fall after immobilization, were seen at A1 region. The degree of epinephrine level lowering at A1 region does not correlate with peculiarities of the changed blood pressure or stomach mucosa. It is suggested that A1 region participates
