PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The article reviews the recent findings on the use of optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) in neurology.

Newly formed intraretinal vessels caused by experimental renovascular hypertension were studied histopathologically in rats. Primary retinal telangiectasis or Coats' disease is a non-hereditary retinal vascular abnormality consisting of incompetent telangiectatic and aneurysmal retinal vessels. It is characteristically found unilaterally in boys and occasionally may be associated with other systemic disorders. The authors report the first case of primary retinal telangiectasis with a concomitant diffuse central nervous system venous abnormality.

PURPOSE: Fractal analysis can be used to quantitatively analyze the retinal microvasculature and might be a suitable method to quantify retinal capillary changes in sickle cell disease (SCD) patients. Retinal oximetry measurements might function as a proxy for the pathophysiology of cerebrovascular diseases. Moreover, hypoxia has an important role in the pathophysiology of diabetic and other retinopathies. However, little is known about the oximetry around the macula in SCD patients.
