A retrospective study of 3456 deliveries was conducted from the records of four Standardbred broodmare farms where mares were bred by artificial insemination and maintained under close veterinary supervision. Retained fetal membranes (RFM) were observed in 10.6% of the deliveries. Retained fetal membranes occurred more frequently (p < 0.05) after dystocia and in mares which had RFM the previous year. Combined trabeculectomy and phacoemulsification was performed on 21 eyes with poorly controlled glaucoma (15 open-angle glaucomas, 5 capsular glaucomas, and one secondary glaucoma) and coexisting cataract. In 20 of these eyes there was severe glaucomatous damage of the optic nerve with visual field loss. With the procedure used by the present authors there was a higher incidence of choroidal detachments, whereas other complications occurred at a lower rate than reported by other authors combining cataract extraction and trabeculectomy. A review of 41 possible cases of beriberi diagnosed in a 4-year period (1981-1985) revealed that the diagnosis was fairly certain in 23 patients, although measurements of red cell transketolase had not been performed. Fifteen patients had classic (high-output) beriberi and 8 acute beriberi (shoshin type). This article calls for an increased awareness of the condition so that appropriate and timely therapy may be instituted.

Almost half of our patients admitted with mesenteric infarction (MI) (n = 81) were inoperable. In the group (n = 44) who underwent curative therapy, 45% have survived, 32% died of recurrent MI and 23% from causes other than intestinal ischemia. In view of this high rate of recurrence our therapeutic strategy in MI needs to be reconsidered. Postischemic vasoconstriction may be the main cause of the progression of mesenteric ischemia despite apparently curative treatment. Selective injection of vasodilators in the superior mesenteric artery may improve prognosis.

The clinical features of 21 horses which sustained head fractures are reviewed. There was a higher incidence of fractures in males and Standardbred horses. Surgical treatment was practical and successful in most cases when the fractures involved the bones of the jaws and the face. Fractures which involved the cranial cavity or the cranial nerves were difficult to treat and usually held a poor prognosis.

A retrospective study has been undertaken of 104 men with breast cancer, all of them having a follow-up period of at least 5 years. In 78 cases a histological diagnosis was obtained. The preferred treatment for operable cases was radical mastectomy, in which 60 per cent positive axillary nodes were found. The histological and clinical features of nonpapillary bladder lesions in 53 patients are described. In the literature there is agreement about the variable prognosis of an ocular perforation, but analysis of the factors which affect the prognosis is rare. In this article the factors which determined the final visual in 60 perforation cases are discussed. One third of the total number of eye lost useful vision (visual acuity less than 0.1) while 43% retained good sight (visual acuity greater than 0.8). Equine cryptorchidism was examined by a review of the literature and a retrospective study of 350 horses over a 14-year period. The incidence of left vs right testis retention was nearly equal. Of the 115 elbow dislocations treated at two New Orleans hospitals between 1959 and 1969, 78% were posterior. Sixty-one percent of the patients were 21 years of age or younger, and the male-female ratio was 1.7:1.0. The most common associated injuries were fractures of the medial condyle or epicondyle.
