We report the finding of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE)-virus in indigenous Ixodes ricinus (L.), 'Candidatus Neoehrlichia mikurensis' in exotic Ixodes frontalis (Panzer) and Rickettsia aeshlimannii in exotic Hyalomma marginatum Koch subadult ticks detached from 18.5% (107/577) infested migratory birds in the Baltic region of Russia. This is the first record of human pathogenic 'Candidatus N. mikurensis' in I. frontalis ticks. Moreover, seven other pathogens were identified in I. ricinus ticks. Spotted Fever Group rickettsiae were the predominant pathogen group and were detected only in nymphs. …

BACKGROUND: This study aimed at investigating the diversity of pathogens in human-biting ixodid ticks, in relation to their seasonality and … piroplasms.
RESULTS: Among 502 ticks, six species were identified, with the predominance of Ixodes ricinus. Considering tick-borne pathogens, four Rickettsia spp., Anaplasma phagocytophilum, seven genospecies of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato, and three Babesia spp. were detected. Some of these predominated in nymphs or females of I. ricinus. Tick-infes …

Ixodes ricinus tick is a vector of bacteria of Borreliella genus and Borrelia miyamotoi. Exposure to ticks constitutes occupational risk to soldiers, but the current knowledge on this subject is still limited. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate tick abundance and prevalence of infection with Borreliella spp. and/or B. miyamotoi. Ticks were collected from vegetation on Drawsko, Ustka and Orzysz military training areas. Additionally, ticks infesting soldiers were also obtained. Ticks were examined by nested PCR and sequencing of flaB gene fragment. General Linear Models of One Vari…

Tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) is found in Ixodes ricinus ticks throughout the area where viable tick populations exist. In Norway, TBEV is found in I. ricinus from the south coast until Brønnøy municipality in Nordland County and the range of the vector is expanding due to changes in climate, vegetation, host animals and environmental conditions. TBEV might thus have the potential to establish in new areas when I. ricinus expand its geographical distribution. At present, there is little knowledge on the status of the virus in high-altitude areas of inland regions in Norway. It has previ…

Tick-borne diseases have a complex epidemiology that depends on different ecological communities, associating several species of vertebrate hosts, vectors and pathogens. While most studies in Europe are focused on Ixodes ricinus, the common sheep tick, other Ixodes species may also be involved in the transmission or maintenance of different pathogens. In this study, we describe for the first time the activity pattern of I. frontalis, an understudied but widespread tick species associated with several common bird species in Europe. Questing ixodid tick stages (larvae, nymphs and adults) of both…

BACKGROUND: Lyme borreliosis is the most prevalent tick-borne disease in Europe. Ixodes ricinus also carries other pathogenic bacteria, but corresponding human diseases are rarely reported. Here, we compared the exposure to Rickettsia helvetica and Rickettsia monacensis with that to Lyme borreliosis spirochetes. We assumed that their exposure corresponds to their infection rate in questing I. ricinus.
FINDINGS: Three Rickettsia species were detected in ticks with a total prevalence of 7.9%, of which the majority was R. helvetica (78%) and R. monacensis (21%). From the same geographic area, sk…

Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato and Anaplasma phagocytophilum are two tick-borne pathogens of medical and/or veterinary importance which are distributed worldwide. Erinaceus roumanicus, the Northern white-breasted hedgehog, is a common synanthropic species that is known to carry not only the hedgehog tick, Ixodes hexagonus, but also I. ricinus, the most common European tick species. I. ricinus is the main vector of both mentioned pathogens. Within this framework and because only limited information is available on the role of E. roumanicus in the ecology of B. burgdorferi s.l. and Anaplasma ph…

To estimate the likelihood of people coming into contact with the recently described tick-borne agent "Candidatus Neoehrlichia mikurensis," we compared its prevalence to those of Lyme disease spirochetes and Anaplasma phagocytophilum in questing adult Ixodes ricinus ticks collected in various Central European sites and examined ticks, which had been removed from people, for the presence of these pathogens. Whereas spirochetes infected questing adult ticks most frequently (22.3%), fewer than a third as many ticks were infected by "Ca. Neoehrlichia mikurensis" (6.2%), and about a sixth harbored …

The distribution of tick species able to infest ruminants in Italy is briefly reviewed on the basis of published records and new data obtained in several surveys carried out mainly in northern Italy. The most frequent and abundant tick species found on ruminants throughout Italy are Ixodes ricinus and Dermacentor marginatus, the first gradually replacing its association with sheep by the association with wild ruminants. Rhipicephalus bursa was mainly found on cattle while R. turanicus, which is considered one of the most sheep-associated species, was found only on wild boar. Haemaphysalis punc…

Ixodes ricinus is the vector for Borrelia afzelii, the predominant cause of Lyme borreliosis in Europe, whereas Ixodes scapularis is the vector for Borrelia burgdorferi in the USA. Transcription of several I. scapularis genes changes in the presence of B. burgdorferi and contributes to successful infection. To what extend B. afzelii influences gene expression in I. ricinus salivary glands is largely unknown. Therefore, we measured expression of uninfected vs. infected tick salivary gland genes during tick feeding using Massive Analysis of cDNA Ends (MACE) and RNAseq, quantifying 26.179 unique …

Lyme borreliosis is a zoonosis: its causative agent, Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato, circulates between Ixodes ricinus ticks and a large variety of vertebrates. I. ricinus has a wide geographical distribution throughout Europe within the latitudes of 65 degrees and 39 degrees and from Portugal into Russia. Enzootic cycles in Europe involve at least 7 Borrelia species. Apparently, associations exist in nature between Borrelia species and hosts. B. afzelii and B. burgdorferi sensu stricto are associated with rodents, and B. garinii and B. valaisiana with birds. B. lusitaniae may be transmitted …

The ecological factors shaping the distribution of key tick vector species remain only partially understood. We analysed the spatial patterns of three medically important ticks, Dermacentor reticulatus, Ixodes persulcatus, and Ixodes ricinus in Latvia, using extensive field records from a single survey combined with environmental predictors harmonised to a 1 km spatial resolution. We pursued two complementary objectives: (i) to model and map the spatial distribution of three epidemiologically important tick species in Latvia, and (ii) to evaluate whether a joint species distribution modelling …

BACKGROUND: European hedgehogs (Erinaceus europaeus) are urban dwellers and host both Ixodes ricinus and Ixodes hexagonus. These ticks transmit several zoonotic pathogens like Borrelia burgdorferi (sensu lato), Anaplasma phagocytophilum, Rickettsia helvetica, Borrelia miyamotoi and "Candidatus Neoehrlichia mikurensis". It is unclear to what extent hedgehogs in (sub) urban areas contribute to the presence of infected ticks in these areas, which subsequently pose a risk for acquiring a tick-borne disease. Therefore, it is important to investigate to what extent hedgehogs contribute to the enzoot…

Candidatus Neoehrlichia mikurensis (CNM; family Anaplasmataceae) was recently recognized as a potential tick-borne human pathogen. The prese … hological and molecular species identification, the majority of the ticks were identified as Ixodes ricinus. Samples were initially screened by real-time PCR targeting the CNM 16S rRNA gene, and confirmed by a second real-time PCR targeting the groEL gene. For positive samples, a 1260 base pair fragment of the 16S rRNA gene was sequenced. Based upon bacte …

From a herd of captive reindeer (Rangifer tarandus tarandus) consisting of two males and seven females with five calves, three calves were diagnosed on post mortem examination with a Babesia capreoli infection. The diagnosis was indicated by PCR and when the other reindeer were examined two adult females and a one-year-old male were Babesia-positive. Molecular characterization of the 18S rDNA of the parasite showed complete identity with known B. capreoli sequences. Ixodes ricinus has been demonstrated to be a competent vector for B. capreoli from infected roe deer (Capreolus capreolus), the n…

Rickettsia helvetica belonging to spotted fever group rickettsiae was recently detected by polymerase chain reaction followed by sequencing in European sheep ticks (Ixodes ricinus) from Hungary. Current knowledge on these rickettsiae and the clinical and diagnostic aspects of R. helvetica infection is summarized. In acute cases, R. helvetica is generally responsible for flu-like symptoms. Nevertheless, recent data indicate that in chronic cases, these rickettsiae can be responsible for perimyocarditis resulting sudden cardiac death and might play a role in the pathogenesis of aortic valve dise…
