PURPOSE: Fluid transport by the corneal endothelium is dependent on the presence of HCO(3)(-) and the activity of carbonic anhydrase (CA)-II and -IV, the cytoplasmic and membrane-bound CAs, respectively. This study was conducted to examine the inhibition of CA activity in cultured bovine corneal endothelial cells (BCECs) by dorzolamide, a topical CA inhibitor used in glaucoma therapy.

An eleven-year-old female Japanese mongrel cat was referred to the Tottori University Veterinary Teaching Hospital for assessment of acute paresis and dyspnea. Two-dimensional echocardiography showed a hydropericardium. The mitral valve leaflets were thickened, the separation of the right and left leaflets was not complete. We report an autopsy case of duodenal bulb obstruction caused by a shiitake mushroom. A 74-year-old woman with depression was admitted to the hospital after suffering nausea and abdominal fullness for 3 days. Transvaginal hysterosalpingoultrasonography (HSUG) was performed using a uterine cannula and Ringer's solution (Kabi Baxter) as a contrast agent in 14 women consulting for infertility. The results were compared with those of chromopertubation at laparoscopy/laparotomy. With HSUG, the uterine cavity was always well visualized, though it was more difficult to evaluate tubal status. Rouleaux formation of washed red blood cells (r.b.c.s) from subjects with sickle cell trait (HbAS) was measured by the rapid coagulation method. The r.b.c.s were suspended in the donor's native plasma or in 1.3% dextran in phosphate-buffered Ringer solution at pHs of 6.5, 7.4 and 8.2. HbAS cells showed more rouleaux formation than HbAA (normal) cells in plasma (P less than 0.005). Plasma fibrinogen concentration of HbAS and HbAA subjects did not differ significantly (mean 2.9, s.d. 0.7 g l-1 for both groups). In the dextran solution, HbAS cells were more aggregable at pH 6.5 but less at pH 8.2

The endothelial damage caused by X-ray contrast media is tested on "en face preparations" of the rat aorta after silver staining. Hypertonic contrast media cause dehydration of the vessels so that solutions of silver nitrate penetrate into the media during the phase of rehydration whereby medial transverse lines are stained. These artifacts can be avoided by 3 minutes rehydration of the vessels by Ringer solution prior to silver staining. All burn injuries involving more than 10% of the total body surfaces in children necessitate immediate fluid replacement.
