Thymectomy is the cornerstone in the treatment of thymic tumors and an accepted option for the management of myasthenia gravis. Different surgical approaches have been described, but the gold standard is represented by median sternotomy. In the last two decades, the development of minimally invasive surgery has led to an increased acceptance of thymectomy, especially for benign diseases. Robotic thymectomy seems a further step in the development and evolution of minimally invasive approaches. Since its introduction, different authors described their experience with robotic thymectomy, both for

BACKGROUND: The development of social assistive robots is an approach with the intention of preventing and detecting falls among seniors. There is a need for a relatively low-cost mobile robot with an arm and a gripper which is small enough to navigate through private homes.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: User requirements of a social assistive robot were collected using workshops, a questionnaire and interviews. Two prototype versions of a robot were designed, developed and tested by senior citizens (n = 49) in laboratory trials for 2 h each and in the private homes of elderly persons (n = 18) for 3

Minimally invasive approaches to diaphragm plication for eventration include thoracoscopic and laparoscopic techniques. The elevated hemidiaphragm and ribs limit thoracoscopic techniques. We report our modification of the laparoscopic approach using robotic assistance with the da Vinci Surgical System, (Intuitive Surgical Inc, Sunnyvale, CA) to avoid single-lung ventilation, facilitate exposure, and allow more precise placement of plication sutures to achieve an even tension and maximum plication. Critical steps include creation of a small defect in the diaphragm to equalize pressures between

OBJECTIVES: Laryngoceles are air-filled sacs which communicate with the laryngeal lumen. When filled with mucus or pus, they are called laryngomucoceles and laryngopyoceles, respectively. Transoral robotic surgery (TORS) is a new and remarkable technique that expands its usefullness in otorhinolaryngology. Conventional treatments for laryngoceles were previously performed using external approaches, with aesthetically unfavorable and less function-sparing results. Transoral laser microsurgical approaches for laryngoceles were seldom reported. It is aimed to present authors' clinical experience

This case report describes the use of trans-oral robotic surgery (TORS) for the excision of a combined laryngocele. Mixed or combined laryngoceles extend from the supraglottic larynx through the thyrohyoid membrane into the neck. Surgical excision for these benign lesions often requires combined external (transcervical) and internal (transoral endoscopic) approaches which carry significant morbidity. We present the case of a 37-year-old male who was diagnosed with a large laryngopyocele and was subsequently managed with a transoral excision using the da Vinci Si surgical robot system. The proc

BACKGROUND: The laryngeal schwannoma is a rare benign tumor of the larynx, most frequently found in the aryepiglottic fold, which can be rather bulky when diagnosed.
METHODS: We present a primary transoral robotic surgery (TORS) for a laryngeal schwannoma and highlight the advantages of the robotic assistance.
RESULTS: Thanks to the high-definition 3D dynamic vision and an improved freedom of movement, it is possible to accurately accomplish surgical tasks that previously were much more complex or even unfeasible through a minimally invasive approach, potentially minimizing the surgical dama

BACKGROUND: The use of radical prostatectomy for the treatment of prostate cancer has been increasing during the last decade partially due to the widespread adoption of the robotic-assisted laparoscopic technique. Although no prospective, randomized controlled trials have compared open radical prostatectomy (ORP) with robotic-assisted laparoscopic radical prostatectomy (RALRP), numerous comparative studies have been retrospectively conducted.
METHODS: A systematic review of the literature was performed to clarify the role and advancement of RALRP. Studies comparing ORP with RALRP that measure

CONTEXT: The incidence of oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma has increased during the past decade and is related primarily to the human papillomavirus. This change in etiology, from tobacco and alcohol to human papillomavirus, has resulted in improved survival for the disease. In the United States, open resection had largely been replaced by concurrent chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy by the early 2000s. The advent of transoral surgery has led to an increase in surgery as the primary treatment for both early- and advanced-stage oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma because it has potential

In April 2014, Team Watanabe have completed 249 robot-assisted cardiac surgeries. Wide range of procedures include internal thoracic artery harvesting, totally endoscopic coronary artery bypass grafting(CABG), atrial septal defect closure, mitral valve plasty, cardiac tumor resection. The major benefit of robot-assisted cardiac surgery, which differentiates it from minimally invasive cardiac surgery, is that it only requires a few ports instead of small thoracotomy. Mitral valve plasty for regurgitation is one of the most suitable indication, which represents the advantage of robot-assisted ca

We describe the technique for the first robotically assisted bilateral bronchoplasty for the treatment of tracheobronchomalacia. Since 1954, this disease process has been treated with a right thoracotomy and posterior splinting of the tracheal membrane with mesh to restore the C-shape of the trachea. Traditional video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery has been of limited benefit in these cases owing to technical challenges. A robotically assisted technique offers the dual benefit of a minimally invasive port-based system while reproducing an open surgical technique.

Transoral robotic surgery (TORS) has become increasingly used to manage laryngeal and pharyngeal cancers, although the published experience in the larynx is small. Although there is burgeoning use of TORS for primary pharyngeal cancer, its application in the larynx is currently more limited. Successful TORS of the larynx has been predominantly as supraglottic laryngectomy, although there is some experience in total laryngectomy and cordectomy. Limitations of TORS of the larynx are primarily those of access and instrumentation, with respect to both the surgical robot and the retractors used to

Minimally invasive surgery for renal transplantation is still under development. We employed the robotic surgical system to perform renal transplantation with a minimally invasive wound. The operation was performed with a Gibson incision and two working ports. The space for the transplantation was created by retroperitoneal dissection with the robot lifting the abdominal wall. Vascular reconstruction was performed with two robotic needle drivers. We successfully performed robot-assisted renal transplantation in five female and five male patients with an average wound length of 7.7 ± 1.04 cm. N

Percutaneous revascularization (PCI) has made significant technological progress in the last four decades. Despite advances in the safety and efficacy of the coronary revascularization, interventional cardiologists have to cope with occupational hazards including exposure to radiation, cataract, and orthopedic problems. Robotic systems that enable distant navigation were developed to address the risks and challenges that are associated with percutaneous revascularization. The PRECISE multi-center study with robotic-enhanced PCI demonstrated technical success of 98.7% and clinical success of 97

Atrial septal defect (ASD) is one of the most common congenital cardiac diseases. This pathology can be treated with percutaneous devices. However, some of the ASDs are not suitable for device closure. Also, there may be device-related late complications of transcatheter ASD closure. Currently, robotic surgical techniques allow surgeons to close ASDs in a totally endoscopic fashion with a high success rate and a low complication rate. This study demonstrates the basic concepts and technique of robotic ASD closure.

AIM: Sacral insufficiency fracture is an important cause of lower back and groin pain among the osteoporotic population. Diagnosis and treatment of SIFs are challenging. Currently, surgical treatment includes sacroplasty under C-arm fluoroscopy or computed tomography. Both techniques have a risk of accuracy and high radiation exposure. A sacral insufficiency fracture patient treated using robotic assisted surgery is presented and present literature is discussed.
METHOD: A bilateral sacral insufficiency fracture patient with an additional L5 osteoporotic vertebra fracture is treated by bilater
