PCR-Based Detection of Babesia ovis in Rhipicephalus bursa and Small Ruminants.

This study aimed to assess the prevalence of Babesia ovis infection in adult Rhipicephalus bursa and small ruminants in West Azerbaijan province, Iran. Blood samples were collected from 280 sheep and 122 goats of forty randomly selected flocks. Specific B. ovis fragment was detected in 67 animals (16.7%), of which 52 animals (18.6%) were sheep and 15 animals (12.2%) goats (P < 0.05). Of the 848 R. bursa collected from naturally infested small ruminants and farm dogs, Babesia ovis was detected by PCR in salivary glands of 94 adult ticks. The frequency of B. ovis infection was higher in flocks w…

Coxiella burnetii in humans, domestic ruminants, and ticks in rural western Kenya.

We conducted serological surveys for Coxiella burnetii in archived sera from patients that visited a rural clinic in western Kenya from 2007 to 2008 and in cattle, sheep, and goats from the same area in 2009. We also conducted serological and polymerase chain reaction-based surveillance for the pathogen in 2009-2010, in human patients with acute lower respiratory illness, in ruminants following parturition, and in ticks collected from ruminants and domestic dogs. Antibodies against C. burnetii were detected in 30.9% (N = 246) of archived patient sera and in 28.3% (N = 463) of cattle, 32.0% (N …

The spread of pathogens through trade in small ruminants and their products.

While the international trade in small ruminants and small ruminant products is small relative to the trade in bovine, swine and poultry products, it is still economically important. In addition to wool, it includes some unique products (such as goat and sheep milk cheeses, cashmere fibre and karakul pelts) and the sheep/goat meat trade plays a large part in sustaining livelihoods in several regions of the world. The trade in small ruminants and their products also merits consideration because sheep and goats may transmit zoonotic diseases such as Rift Valley fever, Crimean Congo haemorrhagic …

Prions of ruminants show distinct splenotropisms in an ovine transgenic mouse model.

BACKGROUND: Transmissible agents involved in prion diseases differ in their capacities to target different regions of the central nervous system and lymphoid tissues, which are also host-dependent. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Protease-resistant prion protein (PrP(res)) was analysed by Western blot in the spleen of transgenic mice (TgOvPrP4) that express the ovine prion protein under the control of the neuron-specific enolase promoter, after infection by intra-cerebral route with a variety of transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs) from cattle and small ruminants. Splenic PrP(res)…

Incidence and prevalence of tick-borne haemoparasites in domestic ruminants in Ghana.

Giemsa-stained thin blood smears prepared monthly from cattle, sheep and goats in the Greater Accra region of Ghana between May 1994 and Dec … in cattle, with 100% incidence in calves by 10 months of age, and Anaplasma was commonest in small ruminants. The relative prevalence of these haemoparasites in blood smears from cattle, sheep and goats sampled on a single occasion at sites in all 10 regions of Ghana was found to be similar, though actual infection rates were lower. Packed cell volume (PCV …

Seroprevalence of Coxiella burnetii in selected populations of domestic ruminants in Newfoundland.

The seroprevalence of Coxiella burnetii among cattle, sheep, and goats in Newfoundland was determined by microimmunofluorescence. Seropositivity to phase II antigen increased in sheep from 3.1% in 1997 to 23.5% in 1999-2000 (P < 0.001). Cows (24%) had antibodies to phase I antigen; goats (15.6%) had antibodies to phase II antigen. Seroprevalence of C. burnetii is increasing among sheep.

Copper poisoning in the Kruger National Park: field investigation in wild ruminants.

Chronic copper poisoning was investigated in ruminants within the Phalaborwa area of the Kruger National Park (KNP). Exposure of ruminants to environmental copper pollution resulting form copper smelting operations of a mine in the area was examined by comparing impala faecal copper concentrations in dung heaps and tissue (liver, lung and kidney) copper concentrations of organs collected from impala and buffalo culled within three risk zones (high, moderate and low) of the study area in relation to the distance from the smelter over a period of 4 years. An additional area within the KNP not ex…

Contagious agalactia of small ruminants: current knowledge concerning epidemiology, diagnosis and control.

Contagious agalactia of small ruminants is a syndrome which principally affects the mammary glands, joints and eyes. The main causal agents are Mycoplasma agalactiae in sheep, and M. agalactiae, M. mycoides subsp. mycoides large colony type and M. capricolum subsp. capricolum in goats. In addition, M. putrefaciens can produce a similar clinical picture, particularly in goats. Contagious agalactia occurs on all five continents and is often enzootic. The evolution of the infection tends to be chronic in affected animals and herds. Symptomless shedding of mycoplasmas, mainly in the milk, may pers…

Recent developments in the diagnosis of rinderpest and peste des petits ruminants.

Effective implementation of control measures for rinderpest and peste des petits ruminants requires that a proper and rapid diagnosis of the disease is made. Peste de petits ruminants (PPR) can be confused clinically with other infections such as pasteurellosis or contagious ecthyma. Rinderpest, in its classical form, is easy to identify clinically; however, mass vaccination in many countries and also the emergence of mild strains of the virus have made clinical diagnosis more difficult. Clinical observations for both diseases should always be confirmed by a laboratory. Diagnostic techniques u…

Some characteristics of ruminants and swine that complicate management of general anesthesia.

Successful anesthetic management of food animals depends on knowledge of basic principles and techniques of anesthesia common to most species. When specifically considering food animals, additional emphasis is directed toward animal size, temperament, and anatomy. Respiratory failure induced by a variety of mechanisms is a major complication of special importance in ruminants. Problems relate especially to difficulty of endotracheal intubation, inhalation of saliva and rumen contents, and reduced lung gas volume caused by abdominal organ (especially rumen)-induced cranial diaphragmatic displac…

Efficacy of fenbendazole for endoparasite control in large herds of nondomestic ruminants.

An experimental 4% fenbendazole premix was milled into the feed of 55 nondomestic ruminants (37 antilopines, 12 hippotragines, and 6 caprines). Efficacy of the premix against endoparasites in the ruminants was determined by comparison with pre- and posttreatment fecal egg counts. Dosages calculated from feed consumption percentages were 3.6 to 8.5 mg/kg. Dosages less than 5 mg/kg resulted in 80% to 100% reductions in fecal egg counts, and dosages greater than 5 mg/kg resulted in 98% to 100% reductions in fecal egg counts. With all dosage groups considered, Strongyloides and Nematodirus eggs we…

Maternal-fetal relationships of copper, manganese, and sulfur in ruminants. A review.

Placental transfer and localization of copper, manganese, and sulfur in the ruminant are described. The fetus is completely dependent upon the dam for its supply of these minerals. Numerous studies have shown significant correlations between fetal and maternal tissue copper concentration. Because copper is essential for development of the central nervous system of the embryonic lamb, an acute maternal hypocuprosis can cause gross brain lesions in the fetal or neonate lamb. Manganese deficiency in the gestating ruminant has deleterious effects on the developing embryo; inadequate dietary mangan

The role of wild ruminants in the epidemiology of bovine petechial fever.

After experimental inoculation of Cytoecetes ondiri, the agent of bovine petechial fever (BPF), multiplication occurred in impala, bushbuck, Thomson's gazelles and wildebeest, as shown by infectivity studies and clinical findings. Similar attempts to infect one eland failed. As a sequel to this, blood and spleen samples were collected from four species of wild ruminants in an area where BPTF was endemic. Isolations of C. ondiri were made from three of five bushbuck, but not from any other species.

Caregiver-Child Co-Rumination and Treatment Outcomes in a Randomized Clinical Trial of Rumination-Focused Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy.

A number of developmental factors increase risk for adolescent rumination. This particular kind of repetitive negative thinking pattern often begins in the context of familial stressors and parental modeling. Though rumination can be effectively targeted with rumination-focused cognitive behavioral therapy (RF-CBT), it is unknown whether caregiver-child co-rumination (1) affects caregiver views of their child's psychopathology, (2) or interferes with youth rumination- focused treatment. The present study uses data from a randomized clinical trial of RF-CBT to examine whether caregiver-child co

Effect of Methane Inhibitors on Ruminal Microbiota During Early Life and Its Relationship With Ruminal Metabolism and Growth in Calves.

The present study aimed to determine whether dietary supplementation with methanogen inhibitors during early life may lead to an imprint on the rumen microbial community and change the rumen function and performance of calves to 49-weeks of rearing. Twenty-four 4-day-old Friesian x Jersey cross calves were randomly assigned into a control and a treatment group. Treated calves were fed a combination of chloroform (CF) and 9,10-anthraquinone (AQ) in the solid diets during the first 12 weeks of rearing. Afterward, calves were grouped by treatments until week 14, and then managed as a single group

Positive beliefs about rumination are associated with ruminative thinking and affect in daily life: evidence for a metacognitive view on depression.

BACKGROUND: Self-regulatory executive function theory (Wells and Matthews, 1994; Wells, 2008) stresses the role of metacognitions in the development of emotional disorders. Within this metacognitive model, positive beliefs about ruminative thinking are thought to be a risk factor for engaging in rumination and subsequently for depression. However, most of the existing research relies on retrospective self-report trait measures. AIMS: The aim of the present study was to examine the theory's predictions with an Ecological Momentary Assessment approach capturing rumination as it occurs in daily

Cueing an unresolved personal goal causes persistent ruminative self-focus: an experimental evaluation of control theories of rumination.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Control theory predicts that the detection of goal discrepancies initiates ruminative self-focus (Martin & Tesser, 1996). Despite the breadth of applications and interest in control theory, there is a lack of experimental evidence evaluating this prediction. The present study provided the first experimental test of this prediction. METHODS: We examined uninstructed state rumination in response to the cueing of resolved and unresolved goals in a non-clinical population using a novel measure of online rumination. RESULTS: Consistent with control theory, cueing an unr
