Analysis of salivary gland transcripts of the sand fly Lutzomyia ayacuchensis, a vector of Andean-type cutaneous leishmaniasis.

The saliva of blood sucking insects contains potent pharmacologically active components that assist them in counteracting the host hemostatic and inflammatory systems during blood feeding. In addition, sand fly salivary proteins affect host immunity and have the potential to be a vaccine against Leishmania infection. In the present study, the salivary gland transcripts of Lutzomyia ayacuchensis, a vector of cutaneous leishmaniasis in Ecuadorian and Peruvian Andes, were analyzed by sequencing randomly selected clones of the salivary gland cDNA library of this sand fly. This resulted in the iden…

Topographic distribution of the sand flea Tunga penetrans in Wistar rats and humans in two endemic areas in Brazil.

Tungiasis is a zoonosis caused by Tunga penetrans. In Brazil, tungiasis is endemic in many resource-poor communities, in which various domestic and sylvatic animals act as reservoirs. Eighty laboratory-raised Wistar rats were exposed to T. penetrans in areas of intense transmission: a fishing village and an urban shantytown in Ceará State, northeast Brazil. The topographic distribution of lesions in Wistar rats was compared with the distribution of lesions in humans in the same area. Our results show that the topographic distribution of embedded sand fleas was almost identical in Wistar rats a…

Salting-out effects on the characterization of naphthenic acids from Athabasca oil sands using electrospray ionization.

There is growing interest in the mass spectrometric characterization of oil sands acids present in natural waters and contaminated soils. This interest stems from efforts to isolate the principal toxic components of oil sands acid extractable organics in aquatic environment. Salting-out effects are demonstrated for nanospray ionization mass spectra of Athabasca oil sands acid extractable organics (naphthenic acids), using Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance (FT-ICR) mass spectrometry. The differences in spectra obtained for the sodium naphthenates in dichloromethane/acetonitrile cosolven…

[On a new species of sand flea from Ecuador and tungiasis, a problem of Public Health in many developing countries].

The authors recently described a new species of sand flea (genus Tunga) occurred in goat, sheep, cow, pig and man, in the Andean village of S.ta Isabel (Ecuador) and named Tunga trimamillata. Its most important morphological characteristics are: slightly larger dimensions than T. penetrans, both in male and female; presence on the anterior extremity of gravid female of three rounded humps surrounding head and thorax; length of the first segment of maxillary palpi which is longer than each of the other three. The importance of this parasite is due to the fact that it can cause the same damages …

Research on the Mechanism of High-Performance Aluminum Alloy Casting of Frozen Sand Mold Coupled with Negative Pressure.

Aluminum-copper alloys, typified by ZL205A (AlCu5MnTiCdV, GB/T 1173), pose severe casting challenges due to their wide solidification interval, poor fluidity, and susceptibility to gas porosity and shrinkage defects. This study introduces a negative-pressure frozen sand mold casting process as a solution to these challenges and systematically quantifies its thermal and microstructural advantages over conventional resin sand and atmospheric frozen sand casting. Using inverse heat conduction analysis of multi-point thermocouple data, the interfacial heat transfer coefficient (IHTC) was quantitat…

Enhanced remediation of oil-contaminated mineral sand by the controlled release of a surfactant from calcium alginate capsules.

The remediation of oil-contaminated soil poses significant environmental challenges, often necessitating innovative approaches for effective and sustainable solutions. This study focuses on the synthesis, characterisation, and application of biodegradable capsules loaded with surfactant for enhanced oil remediation of a clean sand. By controlling the release properties of capsules, the research aims to overcome the limitations of conventional surfactant-based remediation methods, such as rapid washout and reduced efficacy over time. The study outlines a systematic approach, beginning with the …

Detection and isolation of Leishmania infantum and Leishmania tarentolae in sand flies from a canine leishmaniasis endemic area.

Sand flies are blood feeding insects known as vectors of Leishmania spp. worldwide, with Leishmania infantum being the most relevant species in Southern Europe. The sympatric occurrence of L. infantum, which causes canine leishmaniasis (CanL), along with the reptile-associated Leishmania tarentolae, triggered the interest to investigate their transmission dynamics in sand fly vectors. Sand flies were collected over two consecutive years (2023-2024) in a CanL endemic area using CDC light traps and were morphologically identified. Female specimens were either screened for Leishmania spp. DNA by …

Harnessing desert resources: a comparative study of microgreens growth, nutrient dynamics, and performance in desert sand and rockwool.

Food security in arid regions, such as the United Arab Emirates (UAE), is a significant challenge due to harsh environmental conditions such as low rainfall, high temperatures, and low-quality soil. These factors limit agricultural productivity and compromise stability. In such regions, where desert dunes are abundant, using sand as a plant growth medium presents unique opportunities to reduce reliance on expensive, synthesized substrates like rockwool, which have a larger carbon footprint. Using desert sand as an alternative to growing low-input, yet nutrient-rich crops, such as microgreens, …

A review of Leishmania infections in American Phlebotomine sand flies - Are those that transmit leishmaniasis anthropophilic or anthropportunists?★.

Understanding why Diptera, such as mosquitoes and sand flies, feed on humans is crucial in defining them as vectors of diseases such as malaria, dengue fever, Zika virus, and leishmaniasis. Determining their attraction to humans (anthropophily) helps in assessing the risk of disease transmission, designing effective vector control strategies, and monitoring the effectiveness of existing control measures. An important question is whether they are specifically attracted to humans in preference to other mammals or whether there is something else at play. In this paper, I propose that the idea tha…
