Research and recovery: Can patient participation in research promote recovery for people with complex post-traumatic stress disorder, CPTSD?

BACKGROUND: A new diagnosis of complex post-traumatic stress disorder, CPTSD, has been agreed by the World Health Organization, WHO, and evidence is needed for what psychological treatment might be effective, particularly from those with experience of the disorder. We used a novel participatory approach to explore patient views and simultaneously studied the impact on the patient researchers of the research process itself. In this paper, we report on the latter section of the study how the involvement in research of patients with CPTSD affected their mental health. Symptoms of CPTSD may includ

A Kuramoto model of self-other integration across interpersonal synchronization strategies.

Human social behaviour is complex, and the biological and neural mechanisms underpinning it remain debated. A particularly interesting social phenomenon is our ability and tendency to fall into synchronization with other humans. Our ability to coordinate actions and goals relies on the ability to distinguish between and integrate self and other, which when impaired can lead to devastating consequences. Interpersonal synchronization has been a widely used framework for studying action coordination and self-other integration, showing that even in simple interactions, such as joint finger tapping

The importance of hope against other factors in the recovery of mental illness.

Hope underpins the recovery process of mental illness, as recovery depends on the notion that a patient desires to get better. This makes hope the route by which it occurs. Here, we assess the importance of hope in recovery by exploring what recovery means; the relevance of hope and other factors in achieving it; and finally, the difficulties surrounding maintaining hope. We attempt to discuss hope in the context of recovery from three different situations; Depression, Anorexia Nervosa, and Schizophrenia, and therefore we consider what recovery means in each of these situations and hence the r

Interplay of Itch and Psyche in Psoriasis: An Update.

Itch or pruritus is defined as an unpleasant subjective sensation leading to the need or to the idea of scratching. A number of studies have shown that pruritus is often responsible for marked morbidity, quality of life impairment, and even for increased mortality. Patients suffering from chronic pruritus had also decreased self-esteem, suffer from anxiety or depression and have problems to cope with negative feelings. Several studies documented that itching is a very prevalent symptom of psoriasis affecting more than 70% of individuals and for many patient it is the most bothersome symptom of

The Contribution of the Cerebellum in the Hierarchial Development of the Self.

What distinguishes human beings from other living organisms is that a human perceives himself as a "self". The self is developed hierarchially in a multi-layered process, which is based on the evolutionary maturation of the nervous system and patterns according to the rules and demands of the external world. Many researchers have attempted to explain the different aspects of the self, as well as the related neural substrates. In this paper, we first review the previously proposed ideas regarding the neurobiology of the self. We then suggest a new hypothesis regarding the hierarchial self, whic

When feeling skillful impairs coordination in a lottery selection task.

Choosing a major field of study to secure a good job after graduation is a tacit coordination problem that requires considering others' choices. We examine how feeling skillful, either induced (Experiment 1) or measured (Experiment 2), affects coordination in this type of task. In both experiments participants chose between two lotteries, one offering a larger prize than the other. Participants' entry into the chosen lottery was either related or unrelated to their skill, with the final prize allocated randomly to one of the entrants in each lottery. Importantly, across conditions skill was ir

Sociocultural factors in the development of bulimia nervosa in a blind woman: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Although several cases of eating disorders in visually impaired women have been reported, there has been little research on the development of body image and disordered eating in the blind. Overall, it is argued that blind women are protected from developing body dissatisfaction because of having had little or no exposure to thin-ideal images, and that if they do develop an eating disorder, this would be linked to other risk factors. In the one reported case of bulimia nervosa in a blind woman, body image concerns were even absent. METHOD: We report a single case of bulimia nervos

The group self.

Although people often tend to consider themselves and others as unique individuals, there are many situations in which they think, feel, and act primarily as group members. This can bring out the best in them, as when they are inspired to help fellow citizens in need, or the worst, as when they show hostility against others simply because they represent another religious or ethnic group. Understanding when and why the group self becomes more important than the individual self, and how this affects people's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, can help to prevent and redirect unwelcome aspects of

Self-perception of children and adolescents with Möbius sequence.

Möbius sequence is a rare congenital disorder usually defined as a combination of facial weakness with impairment of ocular abduction. Some studies suggest that psychosocial and psychiatric problems might be increased among affected persons. So far, there have been no studies on the self-perception of children and adolescents with the sequence. Seventeen participants with Möbius sequence (9 male, 8 female) aged 9-15 (mean: 11.59) years were studied. None of the probands was mentally retarded or had a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder. Participants filled out well standardized German questi

Losing the certainty of self.

In his theory of trauma, Ferenczi points to the disbelief of adults of a child's account of an event as an actual traumatizing factor. Ferenczi also states that of all the consequences of the trauma, which include identification with the aggressor, psychic coma, departure from the possibility of dreams, and a fall to the hell of nightmares, the most important and fundamental is the lack of certainty of self. The disbelief of the adults destroys the certainty of what is perceived and experienced; it has the power of annihilating the child's belief in his own perceptions, his trust in his own se

The impact of shame and self-judgment on psychopathology in infertile patients.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about psychological processes of infertile couples pursuing medical treatment in comparison with fertile couples and adoption candidates who also suffer from infertility but are not seeking medical help. This study aims to contribute to a better understanding of these individuals in terms of psychological processes (such as external shame, internal shame and self-judgment) and their association with psychopathology, also attending to gender differences. METHODS: One hundred control couples without known fertility problems [fertile group (FG)], 100 couples with an i

Autism and perplexity: a qualitative and theoretical study of basic subjective experiences in schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: Autistic traits and perplexity are considered core features of schizophrenia in phenomenological psychiatry. They express a fundamental disturbance of the self-world relation (including disturbances of self and intersubjectivity). The aim of our study was to examine this disturbance by exploring in detail how autism and perplexity are experienced subjectively. METHODS: It is a qualitative single-case study. In order to fully examine our patient's experiences within the context of his experiential world and not only as isolated or decontextualized symptoms, we applied a heideggeria

A disturbed sense of self in the psychosis prodrome: linking phenomenology and neurobiology.

Interest in the early phase of psychotic disorders has risen dramatically in recent years. Neurobiological investigations have focused specifically on identifying brain changes associated with the onset of psychosis. The link between these neurobiological findings and the complex phenomenology of the early psychosis period is not well understood. In this article, we re-cast some of these observations, primarily from neuroimaging studies, in the context of phenomenological models of "the self" and disturbance thereof in psychotic illness. Specifically, we argue that disturbance of the basic or

Is dyslexia necessarily associated with negative feelings of self-worth? A review and implications for future research.

This paper will provide an overview of research in the past 20 years into the relationship between dyslexia and various aspects of self-perception, including self-concept, self-esteem, self-efficacy and locus of control. Problems are identified relating to the measurement of some of the most widely used constructs, as is the need for more precise identification of key variables relating to them. Critical issues concerning the assumptions that can be drawn from largely correlational data are highlighted also. The conclusion is drawn that an alternative approach to research in this area is requi

Assessment of adolescent body perception: development and characterization of a novel tool for morphing images of adolescent bodies.

We developed a computer-based method of distorting adolescent body images, which incorporates the covariation between body parts found during growth and sexual maturation. An adolescent body-shape database (AdoBSD) and adolescent body morphing tool (AdoBMT) are described; the AdoBSD comprises real (n=320) and morphed (n approximately 41,000) images (front and side view) of 160 adolescents (9-17 years). We used a point distribution model, based upon principal components analysis, to characterize the covariation between predefined body tag-points manually positioned on the body images and to mor

The causal role of negative imagery in social anxiety: a test in confident public speakers.

This study tests the causal role of negative self-imagery in social anxiety. Low public-speaking anxious volunteers rehearsed a negative self-image, a positive self-image or a control image prior to giving a speech. As predicted, the negative image group felt more anxious, believed they performed less well and reported more negative thoughts than the positive image group. These findings do not appear to be due to changes in state anxiety, since they remained unchanged when anxiety was controlled in an analysis of covariance. The negative image group also reported more anxiety than the control
