Rift Valley fever in a zone potentially occupied by Aedes vexans in Senegal: dynamics and risk mapping.

This paper presents an analysis of the interaction between the various variables associated with Rift Valley fever (RVF) such as the mosquito vector, available hosts and rainfall distribution. To that end, the varying zones potentially occupied by mosquitoes (ZPOM), rainfall events and pond dynamics, and the associated exposure of hosts to the RVF virus by Aedes vexans, were analyzed in the Barkedji area of the Ferlo, Senegal, during the 2003 rainy season. Ponds were identified by remote sensing using a high-resolution SPOT-5 satellite image. Additional data on ponds and rainfall events from t…

[Why drug prices are high in sub-Saharan Africa. Analysis of price structure: the case of Senegal].

This article seeks to shed light on the reasons for the lack of correlation between the price of drugs in this very poor sub-Saharan country and the population's ability to pay for them. The analysis is based on: (i) a comparison between the wholesale (exclusive of VAT and other taxes) and government-fixed retail prices and the corresponding prices of the same drugs in their country of origin (France); (ii) a description of the price-setting mechanisms in Senegal in both the public and private sectors; and (iii) an evaluation of public-sector retail price in Senegal, by end users and prescribi…

Exposure of sheep to mosquito bites: possible consequences for the transmission risk of Rift Valley Fever in Senegal.

Rift Valley Fever (RVF) is a growing health problem in West Africa. In northern Senegal, the candidate vectors of this arbovirosis are Aedes (Aedimorphus) vexans Meigen and Culex (Culex) poicilipes Theobald (Diptera: Culicidae). Domestic ruminants are the reservoirs of the virus. A study was undertaken during the 2002 rainy season to assess spatial and temporal variations in exposure to mosquito bites in sheep herds, and to evaluate the possible consequences on the risk of RVF transmission to sheep. Mosquitoes were collected with sheep-baited traps. The number of Ae. vexans females (the predom…

[Maternal and infant prognosis of emergency cesarean section: prospective study of the Principal Hospital in Dakar, Senegal].

The prognosis of emergency cesarean section is poor for both the mother and child in developing countries. The respective impact of obstetrical and surgical factors has rarely been analyzed. This prospective study was carried out in 370 women (mean age, 30.5 years) who underwent emergency cesarean section at Principal Hospital in Dakar, Senegal, between January 1 and December 31, 1997. Fifty percent of these women had been transferred from an outside maternity clinic. Indications related to the mother (75% of cases) or fetus (25% of cases) were divided into two groups according to degree of em…

Dynamics of egg counts and circulating antigen levels in a recent Schistosoma mansoni focus in northern Senegal.

Serum circulating anodic antigen (CAA) levels were compared with faecal egg counts in four subsequent population samples, randomly selected at 8-month intervals, in a recent Schistosoma mansoni focus in northern Senegal. In all four samples, antigen levels showed the same age-intensity profiles as egg counts, with a strong decline in adults. Also across population samples, a consistent relationship was found between egg counts and antigen levels. Assuming the level of CAA to be a direct reflection of worm burden, these findings support the idea that the observed egg count patterns and levels i…

Comparison of human and murine isolates of Schistosoma mansoni from Richard-Toll, Senegal, by isoelectric focusing.

Studies on human and murine isolates of Schistosoma mansoni, from Richard-Toll, Senegal, were carried out by isoelectric focusing in polyacrylamide gels. Seven enzyme systems; lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), malate dehydrogenase (MDH), glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD), acid phosphatase (AcP), hexokinase (HK), glucose phosphate isomerase (GPI), and phosphoglucomutase (PGM), were used to compare the two isolates. All systems tested, apart from LDH, were found to be polymorphic for both isolates. Interestingly, one phenotype is more frequent than the remainder. The results show that there is…

Hepatosplenic alterations determined by ultrasonography in a population recently infected with Schistosoma mansoni in Richard-Toll, Senegal.

Three years after intestinal schistosomiasis had been reported for the first time in the delta of the Senegal River Basin, an ultrasonographic study was conducted on 358 subjects of the community of Richard-Toll with a proven Schistosoma mansoni infection and compared with the findings from 352 uninfected subjects of a nearby town. Periportal thickening was found in 119 subjects (33%) in only one of whom it was greater than 10 mm; liver parenchyma lesions were found in 40 subjects (11%), at about the same rate in all age groups. No correlation was found between hepatomegaly and schistosomiasis…

[Epidemiology of intestinal schistosomiasis with Schistosoma mansoni in Richard-Toll (Delta of the Senegal River). Malacological study].

A recent outbreak of intestinal schistosomiasis (1989) has been reported in Richard-Toll (Delta of Senegal River) with a global prevalence of 43%. A malacological survey has been carried in order to study, the density of Biomphalaria pfeifferi the intermediate hosts, their distribution and rate of infection, and to identify the transmission sites. Ten districts have been selected. The snails have been collected in the different water points of these localities which are the river, the Taouey marigot, the Taouey channel and the irrigation channels and drains of the CSS (Senegal Sugar Company). …

Detection of circulating HBV QSA3/E recombinants and HDV genotype GT5 amongst blood donors in Senegal.

OBJECTIVES: Senegal has a high burden of hepatitis B virus (HBV); however, HBV molecular epidemiology is sparse, and coinfection with hepatitis delta virus (HDV) is poorly investigated. A blood donor panel was evaluated to characterize circulating HBV genotypes, HDV prevalence, and assess the performance of ultrasensitive HBsAg Next, HBV DNA, anti-HDV Total Ig, and HDV RNA diagnostic assays. METHODS: Pre-screened, non-transfused specimens (n = 320) were tested for HBV and HDV biomarkers on the Alinity i platform. Comparator HBsAg testing was assessed with Elecsys HBsAg II. Specimens reactive …

Genetic diversity in the Plasmodium falciparum next-generation blood stage vaccine candidate antigen PfCyRPA in Senegal.

The Plasmodium falciparum cysteine-rich protective antigen (PfCyRPA) is a promising target as a next-generation blood-stage malaria vaccine … P. falciparum clinical isolates from Kédougou, an area with a high seasonal malaria transmission in Senegal. Our data show the dominant prevalence of PfCyRPA wild type reference allele, while we also identify a total of 15 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). Of these, only five have previously been reported, while the majority of the SNPs were present …

[West African tick-borne relapsing fever, a neglected disease of major public health importance in Senegal].

INTRODUCTION: Tick-borne relapsing fever (TBRF) is a zoonotic disease caused by various species of Borrelia that are transmitted to humans worldwide through the bite of soft ticks belonging to the genus Ornithodoros. In Senegal, as in other endemic regions of West Africa, cases of TBRF caused by B. crocidurae and transmitted by Ornithodoros sonrai ticks are underdiagnosed. The disease is not well known among doctors, nurses, or the general population. In some regions, TBRF is the leading cause of vector-borne fever, surpassing malaria. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This narrative and systematic revi…

Two new Later Stone Age sites from the Final Pleistocene in the Falémé Valley, eastern Senegal.

The understanding of cultural dynamics at work at the end of the Final Pleistocene in West Africa suffers from a significant lack of excavated and dated sites, particularly in the Sahelian and Sudanian ecozones. While the Later Stone Age shows varied behavioral developments in different parts of the continent, the chrono-cultural framework of this period remains largely unknown in West Africa. We report on archaeological, geomorphological, and chronological research on two Final Pleistocene Later Stone Age sites in the Falémé Valley, eastern Senegal. Optically stimulated luminescence ages plac…

Prevalence and associated factors of shisha smoking among students in Senegal: Global Youth Tobacco Survey 2020.

INTRODUCTION: Although shisha smoking is banned in Senegal, it has become increasingly popular, especially among youth. Despite the health risks associated with shisha smoking, there are few studies on shisha smoking in West Africa and none in Senegal. Our study assessed the prevalence and factors associated with shisha smoking among students aged 13-15 years in Senegal. METHODS: We used the 2020 Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) Senegal data from 2524 students aged 13-15 years. We calculated the weighted prevalence of ever and current (past 30 days) shisha smoking. Multivariable logistic re…

Ectopic thyroid adenoma diagnosed in a Senegal seabream (Diplodus bellottii, Steindachner 1882): Towards an accurate diagnosis.

Thyroid tissue in teleosts is located mainly in the pharyngeal region, usually reaching other adjacent anatomical locations. Herein, a nodular lesion located in the left operculum of a Senegal seabream (Diplodus bellottii) was surgically excised and sent for microscopical evaluation. Microscopically, the lesion presented irregular borders and consisted in columnar epithelial cells arranged in a tubulopapillary pattern, surrounding a central lumen filled with acellular, acidophilic and homogeneous, material ('colloid'). To determine the lesion's histogenesis, immunohistochemistry was performed …

Effect of Human Immunodeficiency Virus Infection on Human Papillomavirus Clearance Among Women in Senegal, West Africa.

BACKGROUND: Persistent infection with high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) is associated with development of invasive cervical cancer. METHODS: Longitudinal data was collected from 174 Senegalese women. We employed marginal Cox proportional hazards models to examine the effect of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) status (HIV positive vs HIV negative) and HIV type (HIV-1 vs HIV-2 vs dual HIV-1/HIV-2) on clearance of type-specific HPV infection. Analyses were stratified by incident versus prevalent HPV infection. RESULTS: Incident HPV infections in HIV-positive women were less likely to clear…

Increasing prevalence of hypertension among HIV-positive and negative adults in Senegal, West Africa, 1994-2015.

BACKGROUND: Non-communicable diseases, including hypertension (HTN), are increasingly recognized as important causes of morbidity and mortality among people living with HIV (PLHIV) in resource-limited settings. The goals of this study were to determine the prevalence of HTN among PLHIV in Senegal over time and to identify predictors of HTN among HIV-positive versus HIV-negative adults. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study using data from individuals enrolled in previous studies in Senegal from 1994-2015. Blood pressure (BP) measurements taken during study visits were used for analysis.…
