Molecular phylogenetic analysis suggests that the extracellular calcium-sensing receptor (CaSR) emerged evolutionarily in association with the chordate-vertebrate lineage. Our studies overall explore the evolution of CaSRs, and the possible historical linkage of CaSRs to vertebrate skeleton as functional components of calcium homeostasis through regulated storage and/or release. We applied both reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and immunohistochemistry (IHC) to evaluate Casr gene and CaSR protein expression, respectively, in skeletal tissues of a cichlid teleost, the Moz

Sleep-like behavior has been studied in honeybees before, but the relationship between sleep and memory formation has not been explored. Here we describe a new approach to address the question if sleep in bees, like in other animals, improves memory consolidation. Restrained bees were observed by a web camera, and their antennal activities were used as indicators of sleep. We found that the bees sleep more during the dark phase of the day compared with the light phase. Sleep phases were characterized by two distinct patterns of antennal activities: symmetrical activity, more prominent during t

During development of the adult olfactory system of the moth Manduca sexta, olfactory receptor neurons extend axons from the olfactory epithelium in the antenna into the brain. As they arrive at the brain, interactions with centrally derived glial cells cause axons to sort and fasciculate with other axons destined to innervate the same glomeruli. Here we report studies indicating that activation of the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) is involved in axon ingrowth and targeting. Blocking the EGFR kinase domain pharmacologically leads to stalling of many axons in the sorting zone and nerv

Antibiotics are extensively utilized for treating bacterial infections for human and animals. Similarly, pesticides are widely applied in modern agriculture to enhance crop yield. However, their excessive and inappropriate use often leads to contamination of water bodies and soil with their residues causing environmental pollution. Therefore, efficient detection of these contaminants is important. Luminescent metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been emerged as promising materials for sensing different types of organic pollutants through changes in fluorescence intensity and/or color. Herein,

The bladder, stomach, intestines, heart, and lungs all move dynamically to achieve their purpose. A long-term implantable device that can attach onto an organ, sense its movement, and deliver current to modify the organ function would be useful in many therapeutic applications. The bladder, for example, can suffer from incomplete contractions that result in urinary retention with patients requiring catheterization. Those affected may benefit from a combination of a strain sensor and electrical stimulator to better control bladder emptying. The materials and design of such a device made from th

Major evolutionary trends in animal physiology have been heavily influenced by atmospheric O2 levels. Amongst other important factors, the increase in atmospheric O2 which occurred in the Pre-Cambrian and the development of aerobic respiration beckoned the evolution of animal organ systems that were dedicated to the absorption and transportation of O2, e.g., the respiratory and cardiovascular systems of vertebrates. Global variations of O2 levels in post-Cambrian periods have also been correlated with evolutionary changes in animal physiology, especially cardiorespiratory function. Oxygen tran

Tympanal organs are widespread in Nymphalidae butterflies, with a great deal of variability in the morphology of these ears. How this variation reflects differences in hearing physiology is not currently understood. This study provides the first examination of hearing organs in the crepuscular owl butterfly, Caligo eurilochus. We examined the tuning and sensitivity of the C. eurilochus hearing organ, called Vogel's organ, using laser Doppler vibrometry and extracellular neurophysiology. We show that the C. eurilochus ear responds to sound and is most sensitive to frequencies between 1 and 4 kH

The calcium-sensing receptor regulates various parathyroid gland functions, including hormone secretion, gene transcription, and chief cell hyperplasia through G alpha q- and G alpha i-dependent signaling pathways. To determine the specific function of G alpha q in these processes, we generated transgenic mice using the human parathyroid hormone promoter to drive overexpression of a dominant negative G alpha q loop minigene to selectively disrupt G alpha q function in the parathyroid gland. The G alpha q loop mRNA was highly expressed in the parathyroid gland but not in other tissues of these

Vitamin D is a seco-steroid hormone with multiple actions in the brain, mediated through the nuclear vitamin D receptor (VDR). We have recently shown that mutant mice lacking functional VDR demonstrate altered emotional behavior and specific motor deficits. Here we further examine phenotype of these mice, testing their novelty responses, as well as cognitive and sensory (olfactory and gustatory) functions in the novel food, two-trial Y-maze and tastant consumption tests. In addition, we study depression-like behavior in these mice, using anhedonia-based sucrose preference test. Overall, VDR mu

Mosquitoes are highly dependent on their olfactory system for, e.g. host location and identification of nectar-feeding and oviposition sites. Odours are detected by olfactory receptor neurons (ORNs) housed in hair-shaped structures, sensilla, on the antennae and maxillary palps. In order to unravel the function of the olfactory system in the yellow fever vector, Aedes aegypti, we performed single-sensillum recordings from trichoid sensilla on female antennae. These sensilla are divided into four distinct morphological types. Based on the response to a set of 16 odour compounds, we identified 1

Wearable pressure sensors are important for health monitoring, soft robotics, and human-machine interfaces. Traditional sensors use single-component, flexible and solution-processable organic semiconductors. In comparison, organic donor-acceptor charge transfer (CT) systems combine the advantages of both the donor and the acceptor, with tunable CT interactions, offering multiple opportunities to enhance sensing properties. Here, we propose a solution-processed flexible organic thin-film transistor (TFT) pressure sensor based on a freestanding poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT)-fullerene (C60) CT fi

Integration of functional materials and structures on the tips of optical fibers has enabled various applications in micro-optics, such as sensing, imaging, and optical trapping. Direct laser writing is a 3D printing technology that holds promise for fabricating advanced micro-optical structures on fiber tips. To date, material selection has been limited to organic polymer-based photoresists because existing methods for 3D direct laser writing of inorganic materials involve high-temperature processing that is not compatible with optical fibers. However, organic polymers do not feature stabilit

As one of the most commonly used organic fluorescent dyes, recently rhodamines have been successfully employed in temperature sensing. However, few works have been reported on their temperature-sensitive properties, which inevitably limiting their further applications. In order to solve such problem, we investigated temperature-sensitive properties of rhodamine 110, 123, 19, 6G, B and 3B focusing on their fluorescence emission spectra; and analyzed them in the molecular structure perspective. It is demonstrated that the fluorescence emission intensities of all studied rhodamines decreased with

Atmospheric oxygen concentrations rose markedly at several points in evolutionary history. Each of these increases was followed by an evolutionary leap in organismal complexity, and thus the cellular adaptions we see today have been shaped by the levels of oxygen within our atmosphere. In eukaryotic cells, oxygen is essential for the production of adenosine 5'-triphosphate (ATP) which is the 'Universal Energy Currency' of life. Aerobic organisms survived by evolving precise mechanisms for converting oxygen within the environment into energy. Higher mammals developed specialised organs for dete

The aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) is a key regulatory factor that enables the organism to sense and integrate environmental and metabolic signals. Its biological function exhibits a universal "dual nature," a feature that has been relatively well studied in organs such as the skin, lungs, and intestines. However, in the pathological processes of the liver-the central metabolic organ-the specific molecular mechanisms and regulatory networks that determine the functional orientation of AhR (whether protective or detrimental) remain a frontier and highly controversial area of research. This rev

Although COVID-19 is mostly a pulmonary disease, it is now well accepted that it can cause a much broader spectrum of signs and symptoms and affect many other organs and tissue. From mild anosmia to severe ischemic stroke, the impact of SARS-CoV-2 on the central nervous system is still a great challenge to scientists and health care practitioners. Besides the acute and severe neurological problems described, as encephalopathies, leptomeningitis, and stroke, after 2 years of pandemic, the chronic impact observed during long-COVID or the post-acute sequelae of COVID-19 (PASC) greatly intrigues s

The paratympanic organ (PTO) is a small sense organ in the middle ear of birds that contains hair cells similar to those found in vestibuloauditory organs and receives afferent fibers from the geniculate ganglion. To consider the histochemical similarities between the PTO and vestibular hair cells, we examined the expression patterns of representative molecules in vestibular hair cells, including prosaposin, G protein-coupled receptor (GPR) 37 and GPR37L1 as prosaposin receptors, vesicular glutamate transporter (vGluT) 2 and vGluT3, nicotinic acetylcholine receptor subunit α9 (nAChRα9), and gl

The Nodulus and Uvula (NU) (lobules X and IX of the cerebellar vermis) form a prominent center of vestibular information processing. Over decades, fundamental and clinical research on the NU has uncovered many aspects of its function. Those include the resolution of a sensory ambiguity inherent to inertial sensors in the inner ear, the otolith organs; the use of gravity signals to sense head rotations; and the differential processing of self-generated and externally imposed head motion. Here, I review these works in the context of a theoretical framework of information processing called the in
