AIM: To determine the plasma cortisol response to laparoscopy in ewes and investigate means of reducing it.
METHODS: Ewes without lambs at foot (n=40) were subjected to one of three control or one laparoscopy treatments (n=10 ewes/treatment), being: no restraint or drugs; acepromazine maleate (ACP) control and no restraint; ACP and restraint in a cradle for 5 min; and laparoscopy following ACP. 313 sheep were examined in 1996 to assess the importance and seasonal evolution of Oestrus ovis infection in the Algerian region of El-Tarf. Prevalence was found to be 67.4%. The larval burden was 18 larvae by infected sheep. The prevalence was higher in older sheep than in lambs; intensity was similar. The different larval stages were found all along the year in sheep with prevalence ranging from 33.1 to 80.5% for L1, 9.7 to 43.9% for L2 and 8.4 to 23.0% for L3. We describe the main pathologic changes in small ruminants affected by AA amyloidosis, together with the partial sequence of the protein involved. Twenty-one sheep and one goat were selected for presenting macroscopic kidney lesions compatible with systemic amyloidosis. Large inter-individual variability in plasma melatonin concentration at night is a common mammalian trait. In sheep, it varies from < 50 pg ml(-1) to > 800 pg ml(-1) but is very consistent within individuals. Rodent studies of nerve allografts are limited by a relatively short length of graft segment. The authors attempted to establish an outbred sheep model that would allow the study of longer, more clinically relevant nerve gaps. The cDNA encoding sheep ceruloplasmin (sCP) was isolated from a sheep liver cDNA library. The cDNA contig was 3530 nucleotides in length and encoded a protein of 1048 amino acids. The diagnosis of ovine fascioliasis hepatica is presented by a sandwich ELISA with the use of monoclonal antibody ES78 previously reported for the diagnosis of bovine fascioliasis. The assay was applied to faeces of 40 sheep infected with Fasciola hepatica, 88 sheep with other parasitary infections tested by coproparasitology and 100 caprologically negative animals. The extent and causes of sheep losses in the semi-arid Mallee region of north-western Victoria were assessed by interviewing the owners of 79 randomly selected farms running 241 flocks in 1987/88 and 245 flocks in 1988/89. Albendazole (ABZ) containing a trace of [14C]-ABZ was administered intraruminally at 4.75 mg kg-1 to Merino sheep and Angora goats and the pharmacokinetic behaviour of ABZ and its metabolites in plasma nd abomasal fluid compared. Histological studies were conducted with experimentally and spontaneously infected lambs on the localisation of T. ovis larvae in the subcutaneous connective tissue and in the skin. In the first few days following infection an inflammatory process in the papillar and reticular skin layers was found, causing skin defects which appeared on tanning. Forty days after infection the mature cysticerci caused atrophic changes. Openings of 6-8 mm in diameter, evident on the tanning of the skin, appeared. These injuries reduced significantly the quality and the economic value of the skins.
