Hallux valgus (HV), the bunion of the first metatarsophalangeal joint (MTPJ), bothers many adults. No consensus has been reached about the c … aximal increase of 4.03 degrees. This verifies our hypothesis that HV might be developed by wearing shoes. Further longitudinal studies with larger sample sizes are needed to additionally validate our results and determine the magnitude of the effects of shoe wearing on development and progression of HV.

The value of forensic results crucially depends on the propositions and the information under which they are evaluated. For example, if a full single DNA profile for a contemporary marker system matching the profile of Mr A is assessed, given the propositions that the DNA came from Mr A and given it came from an unknown person, the strength of evidence can be overwhelming (e.g., in the order of a billion). In contrast, if we assess the same result given that the DNA came from Mr A and given it came from his twin brother (i.e., a person with the same DNA profile), the strength of evidence will

The pedorthist works from a physician's prescription, which includes a diagnosis, modality, and desired goals. The pedorthist's and the physician's combined efforts result in the patient's foot, shoe, shoe modifications, and foot orthoses working together as one unit.

The aim of the study was to determine whether habitual minimalist shoe runners present with purported favorable running biomechanithat reduc … e favorable or unfavorable responses may be moderated. The purported benefits of minimalist running shoes in mimicking habitual barefoot running is questioned, and risk of injury may not be attenuated.

Previous guidelines suggested that children age 2 to 6 years require a shoe size change every 1 to 2 months. Our study of foot growth in 112 children enrolled in a prospective treatment protocol for flatfoot demonstrates that children age 12 to 30 months will require shoe size change every two to three months but that foot growth slows over the subsequent four years, necessitating shoe size change only every 4 months in children up to 4 years of age and every 6 months in children from age 4 to 6 years.

The type of flat foot that we have called pes valgus with plantar flexed talus, flexible, was treated in children with the Helfet heel seat or the UCBL shoe insert. In follow-up examination of 71 cases for periods longer than one year, 79 per cent of the patients showed that the UCBL shoe insert and the Helfet heel seat improved the clinical and roentgenographic appearance of the foot. The Helfet heel seat is recommended in cases where the plantar flexion angle of the talus is 35 to 45 degrees and the UCBL shoe insert in those cases of plantar flexion of the talus greater than 45 degrees.

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to investigate the differences in the loading characteristics of the patellofemoral joint (PFJ) and the Achilles tendon (AT) between novice and experienced runners across different footwear conditions (conventional vs. minimalist shoes) with rearfoot striking (RFS) and forefoot striking (FFS).
METHODS: Eleven male RFS novice runners and experienced runners were randomly asked to run across a force platform at 12 km/h when wearing conventional and minimalist shoes with RFS and FFS, respectively. AT and PFJ loading were estimated from kinematic and kinetic data. T…

BACKGROUND: Specific foot exercises and the use of minimalist shoes during running or daily life were suggested to strengthen the intrinsic foot muscles and to modify locomotion biomechanics. We aimed to review the effectiveness of these interventions to modify foot muscle sizes, foot strength, and biomechanical outcomes.
METHOD: PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library and SportDiscus databases were searched (last update: 12 March 2024). Randomized controlled trials with intervention duration of four weeks or more were included. A random-effect meta-analysis was performed when at least two studies w…

5 cases of allergic contact dermatitis from rubber footwear were investigated by a combination of patch testing in patients and chemical analysis of causative rubber products. Our studies revealed 2-mercaptobenzothiazole (MBT) and benzothiazyl disulfide (MBTS) (typical allergenic accelerators) as causative chemicals in 3 cases from children's rubber shoes, ladies' rubber boots and ladies' canvas shoes. These 3 patients reacted to mercaptobenzothiazole-type accelerators including MBT and MBTS. MBT and MBTS were determined in each item of causative footwear by chemical analysis, including extrac…

The dorsalis pedis reconstruction requires to bring a thin tissue to recover every noble structure of the foot including tendons, nerves and vessels while resisting the stress induced on these structures when walking or wearing shoes. We report the case of a thirteen year-old child who presented a third-degree burn sequelae on the dorsalis pedis with scar retraction and chronic ulceration on the fifth metatarsal despite multiple skin grafts. He couldn't put on his shoes because of the pain and walking was difficult. We performed a SCIP flap (Superficial Circumflex Iliac Artery Perforator) to r…

Little experimental data exist regarding the comparative biomechanical of various foot orthoses. This study evaluated the comparative effect of biomechanical orthoses and over-the-counter arch supports on controlling rearfoot pronation. Twenty-four patients with forefoot varus deformity were studied while walking on a treadmill. Two-dimensional, videotape motion analysis was used for studying rearfoot mechanics with three experimental conditions: 1) shoes only, 2) shoes plus arch supports, and 3) shoes plus biomechanical orthoses. The variables studied were: maximum pronation, calcaneal eversi…

BACKGROUND: Adopting compensatory walking mechanisms by people with foot drop due to traumatic injury of the peroneal nerve costs altered gait kinetics and kinematics. Therefore, orthoses are generally recommended to minimize the deployment of compensatory gait mechanisms.
OBJECTIVES: To investigate the immediate effects of a low-cost, Neoprene Ankle-Foot Orthosis (NAFO) and the thermoplastic ankle-foot orthosis (AFO) with the shoe-only condition on kinematics and kinetics of gait of people with foot drop following peroneal nerve traumatic injury.
METHODS: Seven people with foot drop due to

PURPOSE: Women wearing high-heeled shoes have been considered to be more characterizing beauty, self-assurance and elegance. However, while maintaining the body on this type of support base, women with increased heel height often complain that wearing high-heeled shoes causes them to experience low back pain. The aim of the present study was to morphologically assess the effect of high-heel use on the static sagittal profile of the spino-pelvic structure.
METHODS: A total of 21 Chinese girls were recruited in this study, with informed written consent. For each participant, standing left later…

Despite frequently using ankle-foot orthoses (AFOs), stability problems remain aproblem among people with calf muscle weakness. Optimizing AFO stiffness to minimize walking energy cost improves walking-related outcomes compared to usual care AFOs. While walking energy cost and gait stability are related, whether stiffness-optimized AFOs improve gait stability has not been investigated. We conducted a post hoc analysis involving ten adults diagnosed with a neuromuscular disease and bilateral calf muscle weakness. 3D gait biomechanics were assessed for: 1) walking with shoes only, 2) walking wit…

We examined a large sampl … initis (12.5%), metatarsalgia (12.5%), and plantar fasciitis (5.6%). Male sex, the use of high-type shoes, the high degree of climbing difficulty, and the competitive level were often related to the onset of foot diseases. Climbing shoes are usually smaller than common footwear. This "shoe-size reduction" averaged 2.3 sizes, forcing the foot into a supi …
