In a multicenter study 118 patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) and 106 after myocardial infarction (MI) were investigated on their coping with diagnosis and onset of severe illness. A newly developed clinical coping questionnaire was applied, covering a wide range of cognitive, emotional and actional ways of coping with illness. The results indicate that more common than illness specific modes of coping were applied: Both groups primarily reported placing trust in the doctors, compliance-strategies and fighting spirit. This prospective study tested the self-complexity buffering hypothesis that greater self-complexity moderates the adverse impact of stress on depression and illness. Forty patients received orthotopic liver transplants at Massachusetts General Hospital between May 21, 1983 and July 21, 1987 (mean follow-up: 64 weeks, range: 2-186 weeks). Twenty-seven patients (68%) were living as of July 21. Among survivors, 15 (56%) returned to full activity; and 7 (26%) were partially rehabilitated. Five patients were rehospitalized or recently transplanted. Successful outcome occurred most often among those who came to transplant early in the course of illness. All adults experienced preoperative anxiety and 17 (50%) of adults had some degree of hepatic encephalopathy.

Twelve non-epileptic patients with psychogenic "convulsive" pseudoseizures were studied to delineate useful diagnostic criteria. Six patients had severe psychological disturbances, a long pseudoseizure history and a poor prognosis, while the other six showed little psychopathology, had undergone a recent emotional trauma to account for their pseudoseizures and had a relatively good prognosis. The characteristics of a typical attack precipitated by suggestion, the ictal or post-ictal EEG and the overall patient profile allowed a definite diagnosis in each case.

The article is devoted to the role of heredity in development of the sick sinus node syndrome (SSNS). We have examined 14 probands and 110 their relatives from families with idiopathic SSNS and established the role in development of hereditary SSNS of polymorphisms of the following genes: -2-adrenoreceptor, enzyme endothelial NO synthase, protein connexin 40, voltage dependent cardiac sodium channels, cardiac myosin heavy chains. We also revealed associations of clinical variants of idiopathic SSNS with genotypes of the studied genes.
