Plasmacytoma of the sigmoid colon associated with a diverticular stricture: case report and review of the literature.

Plasmacytoma is a malignant tumour composed of plasma cells. Most commonly this takes the form of a plasma cell infiltration of bone marrow-multiple myeloma. This may be seen radiologically as either discrete lytic lesions or diffuse osteoporosis. Plasma cells are seen on bone marrow biopsy, and monoclonal immunoglobulins may occur in plasma and/or urine. Less frequently, plasma cell tumours may present as a solitary myeloma of bone, which often progresses to multiple myeloma, or as a plasma cell leukemia. Primary plasma cell tumours in an extramedullary site are relatively rare. Such soft tis

Ulcerative disease of the colon proximal to partially obstructive lesions: report of two cases and review of the literature.

Carcinoma complicating idiopathic ulcerative colitis is well known. Conversely, acute colitis complicating obstructing carcinomas and other partially obstructing lesions of the colon has not been recognized until recently. The present study reports two cases of colitis secondary to obstruction: 1) a giant ulcer with colitis proximal to partially obstruction diverticulitis of the sigmoid colon, and 2) colitis proximal to obstructing carcinoma of the sigmoid colon. The purpose of this report is to document these cases and review the literature on this variety of colitis to facilitate its recogni

Robotic purse-string suture technique for intracorporeal anastomosis using double-stapling technique in robotic resection of rectal and sigmoid colon cancer: a propensity score-matched analysis.

BACKGROUND: Robotic three-dimensional magnified visual effects and field of view stabilization have enabled precise surgical operations. Intracorporeal anastomosis in right-sided colorectal cancer surgery is expected to shorten operation times, avoid paralytic ileus, and shorten wound lengths; however, there are few reports of intracorporeal anvil fixation for intestinal anastomosis in left-sided colorectal cancer surgery. Herein, we introduce a simple, novel procedure for using robotic purse-string suture (RPSS) in intracorporeal anastomosis with the double-stapling technique in rectal and si

Identification of the HT-29 cell line as a model for investigating MCT1 transporters in sigmoid colon adenocarcinoma.

MCT1 transporters play a crucial role in the symbiotic relationship between humans and their colonic microbiome by facilitating the transport of bacteria-derived short chain fatty acids. Expression of colonic MCT1 transporters, localized in surface epithelial cells, is regulated by luminal butyrate levels. However, MCT1 also transports lactate and can be used by cancer cells to facilitate anaerobic glycolysis. Using immunolocalization techniques, this study investigated whether changes in MCT1 during cancer varied between different colonic regions. Whilst MCT1 abundance did not significantly c

[A Case of Sigmoid Colon Cancer Derived from Diverticula].

An 88‒year‒old woman visited the gynecology department of our hospital with a chief complaint of frequent urination and abdominal mass. Contrast‒enhanced CT and MRI scans of the abdomen revealed an 8 cm‒sized irregularly shaped mass in widely contact with sigmoid colon and perforated to the bladder. Colonoscopy could not reach the tumor because of huge mass. The diagnosis was resectable pelvic tumor without distant metastasis, and surgery was performed. The tumor was resected en bloc with sigmoidectomy, hysterectomy and partial cystectomy. The majority of the tumor was in the bladder lumen and

Sigmoid colon cancer presenting as complete prolapse.

BACKROUND: The association of rectal prolapse and colorectal cancer is quite rare and only a few cases have been reported previously in the literature. It is unclear whether colorectal cancer triggers rectal prolapse. CASE PRESENTATION: A 77-year-old male patient presented to our emergency department with complete rectal prolapse, and an anterior resection was performed after rectal digital examination revealed a mass. The pathology result came back as mucinous adenocarcinoma in the sigmoid colon and the postoperative period was uneventful. CONCLUSIONS: Considering the age group in which rec

[General anesthesia for a patient with post-polio syndrome].

We gave anesthesia for a patient with post-polio syndrome undergoing laparoscopic sigmoid colectomy. She is a 68-year-old woman and had been diagnosed as post-polio syndrome since she was 55 years of age. Before the operation, paralysis was observed in her right leg. After inducing anesthesia using propofol, muscle relaxation was obtained by rocuronium bromide for intubation. Remifentanil was used during the operation, and good pain relief was obtained by iv-PCA (fentanyl) after operation.

Endoscopic removal of pedunculated leiomyoma of the sigmoid colon (case report and literature review of dignostic and treatment options).

Colonic leiomyoma are remarkably rare cause of colonic symptoms in clinical practice. They constitute only 3% of gastrointestinal leiomyomas and complete endoscopic removal of the tumour can be a problem because of its submucosal origin. We describe a 62-year female patient with a 8 mm leiomyoma of sigmoid colon that was successfully removed by conventional endoscopic snare electrocauterisation, without complications.

Pyrexia of unknown origin as the only manifestation of colorectal carcinoma.

Patients with colon cancer rarely present with pyrexia of unknown origin (PUO) without other manifestations or symptoms. The present paper reports a patient who presented with a 6-month history of fever. The patient was found to suffer from well-differentiated adenocarcinoma of the sigmoid colon. A few days after sigmoidectomy the fever subsided and the patient recovered. Investigation of the large bowel should always form part of the evaluation in patients with pyrexia of unknown origin.

Endometriosis of the sigmoid colon: a diagnostic problem.

Colonic endometriosis is often difficult to diagnose pre-operatively and most cases are diagnosed postoperatively from histology. The main problems with pre-operative diagnosis are due to the radiographic similarities between endometriosis and malignant lesions and the difficulties in obtaining satisfactory biopsy material.

[Urachal transitional cell carcinoma invading the sigmoid colon].

We report a patient with urachal transitional cell carcinoma invading the sigmoid colon. The diagnostic and therapeutic aspects of this disease are discussed. The literature is also reviewed. This 42-year-old man was admitted with the chief complaint of micturition pain. Operation consisting of total cystourethrectomy, excision of the urachus together with the umbilicus, pelvic lymphadenectomy, ilial conduit plasty, sigmoidectomy, and colorectostomy was performed on June 3, 1986, after the diagnosis of urachal carcinoma invading the sigmoid colon. A tumor the size of a hen's egg was found at t

Early invasive colorectal carcinomas with submucosal invasion: radiographic characteristics with barium double contrast images.

BACKGROUND: We assessed the radiographic characteristics of early colorectal carcinomas with submucosal invasion (CCSI) with the use of double-contrast images. METHODS: From 1989 to 1997, 193 patients with 196 CCSI lesions underwent double-contrast barium enema examinations. Three gastrointestinal radiologists retrospectively reviewed the radiographic characteristics of the lesions and classified them as protruding and depressed types by consensus. Further, subclassifying the protruding into lobular and smooth types was accomplished on the basis of surface structure. Each type was compared wi
