OBJECTIVES: The hexane (HEX) and dichloromethane (DCM) fractions from Blechnum binervatum, Blechnum brasiliense and Blechnum occidentale were studied about phytochemicals and biological properties using multitarget approach.
METHODS: The chemical composition was performed by gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry detector (GC-MS) analysis. Antioxidant capacity was evaluated against free radicals and on lipid peroxidation. Monoamine oxidases (MAO) and cholinesterases enzymatic modulation, as well as effects on rat and human cells, were assessed.

The FA composition of Fasciola hepatica 12 kDA purified native FA-binding protein (nFh12), a candidate vaccine against fascioliasis, is described. The FA chain lengths ranged between 12 and 24 carbons. The principal FA were 16:0, 18:1n-9, 18:0, 20:4n-6, and 20:1n-9. The acids 16:0, 18:1n-9, and 18:0 comprised over half the FA that were bound to the whole FA-binding protein. Small amounts (1.0-2.8%) of iso-anteiso methyl-branched FA also were characterized. Forty-one different FA were identified in extracts of the adult flukes, with the three most abundant FA also being 16:0, 18:1n-9, and 18:0.

Fecal bile acid and neutral sterol patterns of five healthy adult male volunteers, who were challenged by a virulent Shigella flexneri 2a (M42-43) strain and developed dysentery were studied. It was observed that cholic acid was increased from 1.9 +/- 0.4% of total bile acid in the feces before infection to 14.5 +/- 2.1% during diarrhea (P less than 0.001). Chenodeoxycholic acid also was increased from 3.2 +/- 0.7 to 8.7 +/- 3.2% in diarrhea but the difference was not significant statistically. BACKGROUND: Sitosterolemia, an autosomal recessive condition, is characterized by impaired metabolism of plant sterols. Clinical symptoms include skin xanthoma, premature atherosclerotic disease, arthritis, and unexplained hematological abnormalities. However, there is a dearth of studies on sitosterolemia-related brain damage.

Recently we evaluated an isotope ratio method (IRM) for measurement of cholesterol absorption in 14 patients (15 experiments) hospitalized in the metabolic ward by comparing it to simultaneous measurements with a fecal radioactivity method (FRM) and found good to excellent agreement between two procedures (Samuel, P., J.
