OBJECTIVE/BACKGROUND: Sleep problems are a common clinically reported area of concern for children and adolescents with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD). However, limited empirical research has been undertaken investigating sleep problems for children with FASD. The current study aimed to examine the associations between parent-reported sleep problems in children with FASD and child behaviour, caregiver mental health and health-related quality of life and family functioning.
PARTICIPANTS: 163 caregivers of children diagnosed with FASD aged 5-17 years were included in the current study.

Generally sleep is considered a time of amnesia. It is not uncommon for an individual to experience 8 h of sleep and have no memory for events during that time. Similarly, a substantial proportion of the population has no memory for dreams that occurred during the night, despite the fact that the literature on awakening during rapid eye movement (REM) sleep clearly shows that individuals normally have four to six "dream experiences" a night. Research on this issue seems to indicate that the lack of memory cannot be explained by the organisms' inability to perceive stimuli. The data indicate th

The link between habitual short sleep and obesity is critically examined from a sleep perspective. Sleep estimates are confounded by 'time in bed', naps; the normal distribution of sleep duration. Wide categorizations of 'short sleep', with claims that <7 h sleep is associated with obesity and morbidity, stem from generalizations from 5 h sleepers (<8% of adults) and acute restriction studies involving unendurable sleepiness. Statistically significant epidemiological findings are of questionable clinical concern, even for 5 h sleepers, as any weight gains accumulate slowly over years; easily r

A scoping review is an approach to identify or map the extent of key concepts and main sources and types of evidence available on a topic. Hypnic jerks are considered a parasomnia categorized as a sleep-wake transition disorder. Although hypnic jerks are considered a benign sleep/movement disorder, some of the latest research indicates that they may be a clinical characteristic for other sleep disorders that affect health care outcomes. This article conducts a scoping review of the literature to determine the extent, range, and nature of the research activity related to hypnic jerks and identi

In sleep-related dissociative disorders, phenomena of the psychiatrically defined dissociative disorders emerge during the sleep period. They occur during sustained wakefulness, either in the transition to sleep or following an awakening from sleep. Behaviors during episodes vary widely, and can result in injury to self or others. Daytime dissociative episodes and a background of trauma are almost always present; there is typically major co-existing psychopathology. Diagnosis is based on both clinical history and polysomnography; differential diagnosis primarily involves other parasomnias and

AIMS: Sex differences in the prevalence of chronic sleep disorders (CSD), including insomnia, have been documented. Questionnaire-based surveys generally report a higher prevalence in women, whereas polysomnographic assessments often indicate a higher prevalence in men. To elucidate sex differences in sleep disturbances and associated impairments in glucose metabolism, we employed a mouse model of CSD induced by psychophysiological stress.
METHODS: We evaluated the effects of one week of CSD under normal chow on activity and sleep-wake rhythms and six weeks of CSD under a high-fat high-sucros

Dysfunction of glucose transporter 1 (GLUT1) proteins causes infantile epilepsy, which is designated as a GLUT1 deficiency syndrome (GLUT1DS; OMIM #606777). Patients with GLUT1DS display varied clinical phenotypes, such as infantile seizures, ataxia, severe mental retardation with learning disabilities, delayed development, hypoglycorrhachia, and other varied symptoms. Glut1Rgsc200 mutant mice mutagenized with N-ethyl-N-nitrosourea (ENU) carry a missense mutation in the Glut1 gene that results in amino acid substitution at the 324th residue of the GLUT1 protein. In this study, these mutants ex

Several sleep disorders have a genetic basis. These conditions include the narcoleptic syndrome, sleep walking, periodic movements in sleep, circadian delay syndromes and familial insomnia. These disorders illustrate different control mechanisms involved in sleep and wakefulness, including those determining the prevalence and timing of NREM and REM activity, somatomotor inhibition and excitation, autonomic discharge, and the circadian framework of sleep. The genetic defect in narcolepsy has been localised to the short arm of chromosome 6, but the chromosomal localisations of the genetic basis

Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) is a complex disorder characterized by a sleep-related collapse of the upper airway. The most likely candidate for the common pathway linking various abnormalities casually associated with OSAS (such as adenotonsillar hypertrophy, obesity, retro- or micrognathia, acromegaly, or more subtle structural anomalies) is an abnormally small upper airway lumen. Symptoms of OSAS that appear during sleep include snoring, abnormal motor activity, disturbed nocturnal sleep, a sensation of choking, heartburn, nocturia, nocturnal enuresis, and heavy sweating. Daytime

The suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) in the anterior hypothalamus is the major circadian pacemaker in humans. Melatonin is a key hormone secreted by the pineal gland in response to darkness. Light-induced stimuli are transmitted along the retinohypothalamic tract to the SCN. Activation of the SCN inhibits the production of melatonin by the pineal gland through a complex neural pathway passing through the superior cervical ganglion. Accordingly, when light is unavailable, the pineal gland secretes melatonin. The circadian rhythm modulates sleep-wake cycles as well as many physiological functions o

Hypersomnolence disorder (HD) is characterized by excessive sleep, which is a common sequela following stroke, infection, or tumorigenesis. HD is traditionally thought to be associated with lesions of wake-promoting nuclei. However, lesions of a single wake-promoting nucleus, or even two simultaneously, did not exert serious HD. Therefore, the specific nucleus and neural circuitry for HD remain unknown. Here, we observed that the paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus (PVH) exhibited higher c-fos expression during the active period (23:00) than during the inactive period (11:00) in mice.

OBJECTIVES: Disturbances of the sleep-wake cycle and seasonality have been reported in patients with bipolar disorder (BD). Considering that BD seems to be a spectrum condition in terms of clinical and biological characteristics, circadian and seasonal rhythm related to BD could be detected in non-clinical individuals with subthreshold bipolarity. The aim of this study was to screen past hypomanic symptoms in non-clinical samples and investigate their association with deviated sleep-wake cycle and seasonality.
METHODS: Lifetime history of hypomanic symptoms was assessed with the Hypomania Che

Sleep paralysis, colloquially known as "ghost pressing" is a state of momentary bodily immobilization occurring either at the onset of sleep or upon awakening. It is characterized by atonia during rapid eye movement (REM) sleep that continues into wakefulness, causing patients to become temporarily unable to talk or move but possessing full consciousness and awareness of their surroundings. Sleep paralysis is listed in the International Classification of Sleep Disorders, 3rd Edition (ICSD-3) as a parasomnia occurring during REM sleep that be classified as either isolated or narcolepsy-associat

Narcolepsy is a disabling sleep disorder affecting humans and animals. It is characterized by daytime sleepiness, cataplexy, and striking transitions from wakefulness into rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. In this study, we used positional cloning to identify an autosomal recessive mutation responsible for this sleep disorder in a well-established canine model. We have determined that canine narcolepsy is caused by disruption of the hypocretin (orexin) receptor 2 gene (Hcrtr2). This result identifies hypocretins as major sleep-modulating neurotransmitters and opens novel potential therapeutic ap

INTRODUCTION: Low-back pain causes sleep disorders, which impairs the quality of life (QOL) of patients. Sleep disorders are associated with lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS); however, the postoperative effects of LSS surgery on sleep disorders are unknown. This study aimed to assess sleep disorders in patients with LSS using wearable activity trackers and determine whether surgery improves sleep quality.
METHODS: A total of 39 patients scheduled for LSS surgery (mean age 71.1±8.7 years; 22 men and 17 women) were studied. Sleep disorders in the participants were objectively evaluated using a weara

The scarcity of normative polysomnographic (PSG) parameters in typically developing (TD) children and adolescents, as well as those with neuropsychiatric disorders, limits sleep research and clinical management. This study aimed to characterize PSG parameters in TD participants from infancy to 18 years and compare them with those observed in pediatric neuropsychiatric disorders. Data were extracted from 135 publications in the Scopus database citing the AASM 2007 scoring manual and subsequent versions, involving 7015 TD children and 3421 neuropsychiatric participants. Among TD children, total

AIM: To study the effects of nooclerin (deanol aceglumate) on the structure of sleep disturbances in children with tension-type headache (TTH).
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A blind randomized placebo-controlled study of the efficacy of nooclerin (deanol aceglumate), prescribed for 2 months to prevent TTH, was carried out. The study included 60 patients (30 boys and 30 girls), aged 9-16 years, with TTH. Patients were randomized into the nooclerin group (n=30) and the placebo group (n=30). Sleep disturbances were assessed before and after treatment with the Sleep Disturbance Scale for Children (SDSC).

The neural mechanisms underlying the development of the most common intrinsic sleep disorders are not completely known. Therefore, there is a great need for noninvasive tools which can be used to better understand the pathophysiology of these diseases. Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) offers a method to noninvasively investigate the functional integrity of the motor cortex and its corticospinal projections in neurologic and psychiatric diseases. To date, TMS studies have revealed cortical and corticospinal dysfunction in several sleep disorders, with cortical hyperexcitability being a c
