An overview of the immune modulating effects of enzymatic toxins from snake venoms.

Snake venoms are complex mixtures of organic and inorganic compounds, including proteins belonging to the protease (serine and metalloproteinases), oxidase (L-amino acid oxidases), and phospholipase (especially phospholipases A2) enzyme classes. These toxins account for the serious deleterious effects of snake envenomations, such as tissue necrosis, neurotoxicity, and hemorrhage. In addition to their toxic effects, snake venom toxins have served as important tools for investigating the mechanisms underlying envenomation and discovering new pharmacologically active compounds with immunotherapeu

Snake venom induced local toxicities: plant secondary metabolites as an auxiliary therapy.

Snakebite is a serious medical and socio-economic problem affecting the rural and agricultural laborers of tropical and sub-tropical region across the world leading to high morbidity and mortality. In most of the snakebite incidences, victims usually end up with permanent tissue damage and sequelae with high socioeconomic and psychological impacts. Although, mortality has been reduced markedly due to anti-venom regimen, it is associated with several limitations. Snake venom metalloprotease, hyaluronidase and myotoxic phospholipase A2 are the kingpins of tissue necrosis and extracellular matrix

Snakebites at Maharat Nakhon Ratchasima Regional Hospital.

One hundred and ninety-nine victims of snakebite hospitalized at Maharat Nakhon Ratchasima Hospital between 1898 and 1991 were studied. The male:female ratio was 1.9:1 and their mean age (+/- SD) was 30.0 +/- 18.6 years. The most common of victims were farmers and laborers. Dead snakes were identified as follows: 72 were Trimeresurus sp. (36.2%), 36 were Naja kaouthia (17.6%), 4 were Bungarus fasciatus (2.0%), 1 were Colloselasma rhodostoma (0.5%) and 1 was Vipera russelli (0.5%). No death was noted among the victims bitten by Trimeresurus sp, C. rhodostoma and V. russelli. Fifty-eight victims

[Anatomo-pathological study of fatal cases of Malpolon monspessulana (Herman, 1809) (Reptilia, Colubridae) bitten in the head by Cerastes cerastes (L., 1758) (Reptilia, Viperidae)].

Two Malpolon monspessulana (Herman, 1809) were bitten in the head by Cerastes cerastes (L., 1758). The first specimen is fastly dead ten minutes after the bite. This short time does not permit us to point out the lesions by current technics, but only by autopsy two sting marks of C. cerastes poison fangs bites. The second specimen is dead eight hours after the bite, an anatomopathological study shows oedematous and haemorrhagico lesions of the conjunctive and striated muscular tissues. The visceral wound chiefly consists in a myocardic erythrodiapedesis congestion, oedematous areas and alveola

Acute ischemic infarct in the middle cerebral artery territory following a Russell's viper bite.

Ischemic stroke following snake bite is rare. We report an 18-year male who developed right hemiplegia with expressive aphasia following a Russell's viper bite. T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging revealed infarct in the left middle cerebral artery territory. The possible mechanisms for cerebral infarction in this scenario include disseminated intravascular coagulation, toxin induced vasculitis and endothelial damage.

Severe Bushmaster Snakebite Envenoming: Case Report and Overview.

Unlike the well-documented bothropic and crotalid snakebites in Brazil, lachetic envenomings (i.e., triggered by the bushmaster snake) are rare and present significant diagnostic challenges. This case describes a severe envenoming induced by a Lachesis muta snake in a 26-year-old Brazilian man who was bitten near a forest in November 2022. Characteristic symptoms such as sweating and bradycardia pointed towards lachetic envenoming, but initial misdiagnosis as a bothropic bite resulted in a delay in appropriate antivenom therapy. Despite later receiving the correct treatment, the severity of th

Case study: Boomslang envenomation in North-Eastern South Africa.

Boomslang (Dispholidus typus) bites are rare in South Africa. This snake's venom is known to be potently haemotoxic, producing a consumptive coagulopathy through the activation of clotting factors II, X, and possibly IX. Monovalent Boomslang antivenom, produced by the South African Vaccine Producers, is highly effective in treating patients who present with haemotoxic envenomation. The majority of health care centres in South Africa do not stock this antivenom due to cost concerns and because envenomation from this snake is so infrequent; this may have lethal consequences for a patient present

Cortical blindness and paraplegia following hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy as a complication of common krait bite.

BACKGROUND: A case report of a successful recovery from paraplegia and cortical blindness following anti-venom injection for a snake bite by a common krait is reported here. CASE: A 14-year old male patient was bitten by a common krait. On admission to a tertiary level hospital, he was started with antivenom serum. But the patient developed sudden respiratory distress following anaphylactic shock and he was kept on ventilation. The patient was discharged with paraplegia with loss of vision. He was diagnosed as a case of cortical blindness due to hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy. Subsequently,

The effect of green pit viper (Trimeresurus albolabris) venom on platelet morphology by electron microscopy.

The incidence of venomous snake bites increases every year in Thailand, especially due to green pit viper. After the bite, there is bleeding due to thrombin-like property of the venom. The mean platelet volume has been reported to be decreased in those who have been bitten by this snake. In this study we investigate the effect of green pit viper venom (Trimeresurus albolabris) on platelet volume (MPV), number and morphology of platelets in vitro. The test was carried out by washing platelets in phosphate buffer at pH 7.2 to remove fibrinogen, then the washed platelets were mixed with green pit…

Proteomic insight into the venom composition of the largest European rear-fanged snake, Malpolon monspessulanus monspessulanus.

Snake envenomations constitute a worldwide neglected tropical disease, with the vast majority of lethal bites inflicted by front-fanged snakes from the viperid and elapid groups. Rear-fanged snakes (colubrids) were often considered harmless and as a result, are much less studied, but several documented deaths have suggested potent venom in this group as well. The largest European snake (Malpolon monspessulanus monspessulanus), known as the "Montpellier snake", is such a rear-fanged snake that belongs to the Lamprophiidae family. Its venom remains largely unknown but cases of envenomation with

Enzyme immunoassays in brown snake (Pseudonaja spp.) envenoming: detecting venom, antivenom and venom-antivenom complexes.

Although a commercial snake venom detection kit (SVDK) is available to distinguish between the five major snake groups in Australia, there is no assay for quantifying venom or antivenom concentrations in envenomed patients. Serum samples were obtained from patients with brown snake (Pseudonaja spp.) envenoming before and after the administration of antivenom and patients with suspected brown snake bites but no evidence of envenoming. Enzyme immunoassays (EIAs) were developed for free venom, free antivenom and the venom-antivenom complex. Standard samples measured in duplicate had a coefficient…

Fatal cerebral haemorrhage after tiger snake (Notechis scutatus) envenomation.

OBJECTIVE: This case report illustrates the threat to life posed by tiger snake venom-induced coagulopathy, the importance of first-aid, precautions with antivenom administration, the dose of antivenom and the necessity to monitor the coagulation status. CASE SUMMARY: An 11-year-old child was envenomated several times by a tiger snake (Notechis scutatus). Despite administration of three ampoules (9000 units) of tiger snake antivenom, fatal cerebral haemorrhage occurred. Inadequate first-aid had been applied. The bite site was covered with a loose bandage instead of a pressure-immobilisation b

Snakebite nephrotoxicity in Asia.

Snakebites have the highest incidence in Asia and represent an important health problem. Clinical renal manifestations include proteinuria, hematuria, pigmenturia, and renal failure. Nephropathy usually is caused by bites by snakes with hemotoxic or myotoxic venoms. These snakes are Russell's viper, saw-scaled viper, hump-nosed pit viper, green pit viper, and sea-snake. Renal pathologic changes include tubular necrosis, cortical necrosis, interstitial nephritis, glomerulonephritis, and vasculitis. Hemodynamic alterations caused by vasoactive mediators and cytokines and direct nephrotoxicity ac

Inhibition of local effects of Indian Daboia/Vipera russelli venom by the methanolic extract of grape (Vitis vinifera L.) seeds.

Although anti-venom therapy is available for the treatment of fatal bite by snakes, it offers less or no protection against the local effects such as dermo- and myonecrosis, edema, hemorrhage and inflammation at the bitten region. The viper species are known for their violent local effects and such effects have been commonly treated with plant extracts without any scientific validation in rural India. In this investigation, the methanolic extract of grapes (Vitis vinifera L.) seed was studied against the Indian Daboia/Vipera russelli venom-induced local effects. The extract abolished the prote

Bites by the king cobra (Ophiophagus hannah) in Myanmar: successful treatment of severe neurotoxic envenoming.

Three patients bitten by the world's largest species of venomous snake, the king cobra (Ophiophagus hannah), were observed in Myanmar (Burma). All three were involved in the famous snake dance in Yangon (Rangoon) Zoological Gardens. One patient showed no signs of envenoming despite a sustained bite, another developed only signs of local envenoming, but in a third there was severe neurotoxic envenoming requiring mechanical ventilation for 64 1/2 hours, episodes of hypotension and massive swelling of the bitten limb. This patient showed some signs of recovery before delayed treatment with specif

Culturable Aerobic and Facultative Anaerobic Intestinal Bacterial Flora of Black Cobra (Naja naja karachiensis) in Southern Pakistan.

Using morphological analysis and biochemical testing, here for the first time, we determined the culturable gut bacterial flora (aerobes and facultative anaerobes) in the venomous Black Cobra (Naja naja karachiensis) from South Asia. The findings revealed that these snakes inhabit potentially pathogenic bacteria including Serratia marcescens, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Shewanella putrefaciens, Aeromonas hydrophila, Salmonella sp., Moraxella sp., Bacillus sp., Ochrobactrum anthropi, and Providencia rettgeri. These findings are of concern, as injury from snake bite can result in wound infections an

Toxin-Induced Channelopathies, Neuromuscular Junction Disorders, and Myopathy.

Channelopathies, neuromuscular junction disorders, and myopathies represent multiple mechanisms by which toxins can affect the peripheral nervous system. These toxins include ciguatoxin, tetrodotoxin, botulinum toxin, metabolic poisons, venomous snake bites, and several medications. These toxins are important to be aware of because they can lead to serious symptoms, disability, or even death, and many can be treated if recognized ear.
