The behavioral characteristics of Sotos syndrome.

In this study we describe the levels of clinically significant behavior in participants with Sotos syndrome relative to three matched contrast groups in which the behavioral phenotype is well documented (Autism Spectrum Disorder, ASD; Prader-Willi, and Down syndromes). Parents and carers of 38 individuals with Sotos syndrome (mean age = 17.3; SD = 9.36), completed questionnaires regarding self-injury, aggression, repetitive behavior, autism spectrum phenomenology, overactivity, impulsivity and mood, interest and pleasure. Individuals with Sotos syndrome showed an increased risk of self-injurio

Does pervasive developmental disorder protect children and adolescents against drug and alcohol use?

AIM: The aim of this paper is (1) to compare the rates of reported drug and/or alcohol use (DAU) in treatment seeking adolescents with Pervasive Developmental Disorders (PDD), and those with other psychiatric diagnoses (psychiatric controls) seen in tertiary child and adolescent mental health services and (2) to explore the relationship of psychopathology, environmental stressors, and social communication difficulties to DAU. METHOD: Data from the chart review of children and adolescents aged between 12 and 18 years with psychiatric diagnosis seen in tertiary child and adolescent mental healt

Treating selective mutism in a paediatric rehabilitation patient by altering environmental reinforcement contingencies.

Selective mutism is a disorder which can cause severe social and academic impairment, and for which a wide variety of treatment approaches have been used, with varying degrees of success. Selective mutism can be conceptualized as the lack of generalization of a class of operant responses (e.g. audible and comprehensible verbalizations) across environmental contexts. The rehabilitation hospital setting, in which the patient is seen daily by multiple people in multiple settings, is particularly well-suited for implementing a systematic behavioural intervention to establish verbal behaviour and s

Mediators and moderators of the relationship between body image and community integration among burn survivors.

INTRODUCTION: Due to medical advances, care for patients that experience burns has shifted from saving life to improving quality of life. Reintegrating into the community and maintain body image satisfaction may be difficult after a severe burn. Several studies have analyzed these two variables independently, but none have addressed a potential interrelationship. AIM: To investigate the indirect or direct relationship of body image and community integration, potentially mediated or moderated by social stigma, symptoms of depression, symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), or posttr

Loss of Zmiz1 in Mice Leads to Impaired Cortical Development and Autistic-Like Behaviors.

BACKGROUND: De novo mutations in transcriptional regulators are emerging as key risk factors contributing to the etiology of neurodevelopmental disorders. Human genetic studies have recently identified ZMIZ1 and its de novo mutations as a cause of a neurodevelopmental syndrome strongly associated with intellectual disability, autism, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, microcephaly, and other developmental anomalies. However, the role of ZMIZ1 in brain development or how ZMIZ1 mutations cause neurological phenotypes is unknown. METHODS: We generated forebrain-specific Zmiz1 mutant mice

Collaborative knowledge mobilisation to increase awareness and use of new SNOMED clinical terms for fetal alcohol spectrum disorder in England.

INTRODUCTION: Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) affects an estimated 1.8-3.6% of UK school children and up to 27% of children in care. FASD remains vastly under-diagnosed and under-recorded in UK electronic patient records (EPRs), leading to significant challenges for individuals with the condition. In 2024, we developed new SNOMED clinical terms aligned to UK national guidelines and quality standards for FASD. AIMS: Through collaborative knowledge mobilisation (KM), we aimed to: i) raise awareness of the importance of utilising these new clinical terms; ii) identify barriers to FASD cod

Early speech development in Koolen de Vries syndrome limited by oral praxis and hypotonia.

Communication disorder is common in Koolen de Vries syndrome (KdVS), yet its specific symptomatology has not been examined, limiting prognostic counselling and application of targeted therapies. Here we examine the communication phenotype associated with KdVS. Twenty-nine participants (12 males, 4 with KANSL1 variants, 25 with 17q21.31 microdeletion), aged 1.0-27.0 years were assessed for oral-motor, speech, language, literacy, and social functioning. Early history included hypotonia and feeding difficulties. Speech and language development was delayed and atypical from onset of first words (2

Seafood During Pregnancy and Lactation and Child Neurocognitive Development: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Assessing seafood as a food group, rather than as a source of omega-3 fatty acids or contaminants, may better inform dietary guidance for pregnancy and lactation. OBJECTIVES: This study aims to assess relationships between seafood consumption during pregnancy and lactation and neurocognitive development in the child. METHODS: Three electronic databases were searched up to September 2024 to update a previous search from 2000 to 2019. Articles were included if seafood intake during pregnancy or lactation and a child outcome was assessed [neurocognitive development including cogniti

Communication disorders in the correctional system: a systematic review.

OBTECTIVES: Good communication is essential for resolving social conflicts, especially in closed communities such as prisons. When communication is interrupted by factors such as hearing loss or difficulties in coordination, voice, language, fluency, or disruption of any of the biological systems required to communicate, Human Communication Disorders can appear. This review aimed to identify the most prevalent communication disorders amongst prison inmates. MATERIAL AND METHOD: Systematic review through databases of studies that analyze individual inmates with communication disorders over the

Effects of Boron on Learning and Behavioral Disorders in Rat Autism Model Induced by Intracerebroventricular Propionic Acid.

Autism spectrum disorder is a neurodevelopmental disorder in which learning, communication, and social interaction are impaired. Research has sought to minimize the neural impairments associated with autism spectrum disorder and improve the quality of life. Recent studies suggest that boron may benefit nerve cells, with effects varying depending on the dosage. This study explored the impact of boron, administered as boric acid, on behavioral, biochemical, and histopathological parameters in a rat model of autism induced by propionic acid (PPA). Thirty-two male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided

Camus's L'étranger and the first description of a man with Asperger's syndrome.

The continued discussion about the meaning of Camus's famous novel, L'étranger, provoked a re-reading, and this, in turn, led to its clinical analysis and further investigation. The book rests entirely on the thoughts, words and actions of its central character, Meursault, and these were found to show impairment of social relationships, communication and interaction, with other traits diagnostic of the Asperger's subgroup of the autism spectrum disorder. It was then found that Camus had based Meursault on his close friend Galindo, and a search was therefore made for evidence of Galindo's chara

Anxiety and depressive disorders and the five-factor model of personality: a higher- and lower-order personality trait investigation in a community sample.

We describe in detail normal personality traits in persons with psychiatrist-ascertained anxiety and depressive disorders in a general population sample. We investigated Revised NEO Personality Inventory traits in 731 community subjects examined by psychiatrists with the Schedules for Clinical Assessment in Neuropsychiatry. All of the lifetime disorders of interest (simple phobia, social phobia, agoraphobia, panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), generalized anxiety disorder, major depressive disorder (MDD), and dysthymia) were associated with high neuroticism. Social network and behaviour problems among 11-13-year-old schoolchildren. A theoretical and empirical basis for network therapy.

On the basis of theories concerning the relation of the social network to health and behaviour (e.g., social ecology, systems theory, and susceptibility theory), a theoretical model has been developed to understand the influence of the social network on children's behaviour problems in school. In western societies, children may participate in a number of different groups, such as the family, and school, neighbours, and so on. These groups may have different values, ideals and norms, etc. such differences may be assumed to promote the child's development, but they may also give rise to difficul

Algorithmic minds, human bias: How AI-generated images shape mental health stigma.

Mental health stigma is shaped by complex social and representational processes increasingly influenced by digital and algorithmic environments. Despite the rapid diffusion of generative artificial intelligence (AI), little is known about how AI-generated visual representations may affect stigma-related responses. Because generative AI systems may reproduce and amplify stereotypes embedded in their training data and in the prompts used to guide image generation, they represent an increasingly relevant channel through which visual representations of mental illness are produced and disseminated.

Self-reported thyroid disease and mental disorder prevalence in the general population.

OBJECTIVE: Community studies have failed to confirm that biochemically assessed thyroid status is significantly associated with psychopathology. However, it has been reported that self-reported thyroid disease is associated with symptoms of depression and anxiety. The objective of the current study was to determine whether self-reported thyroid disease is associated with elevated mental disorder prevalence in the general population. METHOD: Data from the Canadian Community Health Survey (CCHS) 1.2: Mental Health and Well-being were used. The CCHS 1.2 included the World Mental Health version o

Social Media Use Among Young Adults With Connective Tissue Disorders: Cross-Sectional Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND: Young people with genetic conditions often face challenges coping with their health condition. It can be difficult for them to meet someone with a similar condition, which is important for reinforcement of chronic illness management recommendations. Social media is used by 97% of young people in the United States and may provide those with these disorders a space for emotional expression and support. However, there is a scarcity of literature related to the use of social media among adolescents with genetic conditions as an indicator of their perception regarding their own conditio

Evaluating Large Language Models' Ability Using a Psychiatric Screening Tool Based on Metaphor and Sarcasm Scenarios.

Metaphors and sarcasm are precious fruits of our highly evolved social communication skills. However, children with the condition then known as Asperger syndrome are known to have difficulties in comprehending sarcasm, even if they possess adequate verbal IQs for understanding metaphors. Accordingly, researchers had employed a screening test that assesses metaphor and sarcasm comprehension to distinguish Asperger syndrome from other conditions with similar external behaviors (e.g., attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder). This study employs a standardized test to evaluate recent large langua
