Discrimination among adults with craniofacial conditions.

The primary goal of this study was to establish the level of perceived discrimination experienced by adults with congenital craniofacial conditions in Australia and to examine predictors of discrimination. Specifically, this study tested whether social support mediates the relationship between discrimination and health. Adults (n = 93) who had been treated at the Australian Craniofacial Unit, Women's and Children's Hospital, Adelaide for congenital craniofacial conditions (not including cleft lip and/or palate) completed questionnaires examining satisfaction with life, quality of life, anxiety

Sociotropic cognition moderates stress-induced cardiovascular responsiveness in women through effects on total peripheral resistance, but not cardiac output.

Although cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains the leading cause of mortality in women, few studies have examined the role of psychosocial factors in its development. This study examined the moderating effects of sociotropic cognition (SC), a need for social acceptance and approval, on psychosocial stress-induced cardiovascular responsiveness (CVR) and affect reactivity in women. Sixty-eight normotensive, college-aged females were randomly assigned to a low or high social threat condition. Measures of systolic, diastolic and mean arterial blood pressures (SBP, DBP and MAP, respectively), heart

[The female health: status, causes of deterioration, measures of improvement].

The deterioration of health status of female population is recognized as one of the important medical social problems. On its resolution depends reproduction of population and improvement of social demographic indices in the Russian Federation. The female health can be considered as one of the indices of physical, spiritual and social well-being of family. One of significant aspects of considering importance of female health status is her attitude to issues of her own health. The situation is aggravated by increase of asocial behavior in young women, accompanied by decreasing of quality of lif

Community social environment in relation to opioid use disorder across an urban-rural spectrum.

BACKGROUND: Addressing the opioid epidemic requires understanding environmental factors influencing population-level risk of opioid use disorder (OUD). To elucidate the role of social environmental conditions on opioid-related risk environments, we assessed two community-level measures-social disorganization and social capital-in relation to OUD across an urban-rural spectrum. METHODS: In a case-control study using medical records (2012-2020) from a Pennsylvania health system, 14,674 OUD cases were frequency matched (on age, sex, year, medical record duration) to 58,696 controls. Study indivi

Gaze-Contingent Music Reward Therapy for Social Anxiety Disorder: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

OBJECTIVE: Patients with social anxiety disorder exhibit increased attentional dwelling on social threats, providing a viable target for therapeutics. This randomized controlled trial examined the efficacy of a novel gaze-contingent music reward therapy for social anxiety disorder designed to reduce attention dwelling on threats. METHOD: Forty patients with social anxiety disorder were randomly assigned to eight sessions of either gaze-contingent music reward therapy, designed to divert patients' gaze toward neutral stimuli rather than threat stimuli, or to a control condition. Disrupted computations of social control in individuals with obsessive-compulsive and misophonia symptoms.

Misophonia is a disorder in which certain sounds produced by other people lead to intense negative reactions. It remains unknown how misophonia relates to other psychiatric conditions or impairments. To identify latent constructs underlying symptoms, we conducted a factor analysis consisting of items from questionnaires assessing symptoms of misophonia and other psychiatric conditions. One thousand forty-two participants completed the questionnaires and a social exchange task in which they either could ("controllable") or could not ("uncontrollable") influence future monetary offers from other

Addressing social inequality in aging by the Danish occupational social class measurement.

OBJECTIVE: To present the Danish Occupational Social Class (DOSC) measurement as a measure of socioeconomic position (SEP) applicable in a late midlife population, and to analyze associations of this measure with three aging-related outcomes in midlife, adjusting for education. METHOD: Systematic coding procedures of the DOSC measurement were applied to 7,084 participants from the Copenhagen Aging and Midlife Biobank (CAMB) survey. We examined the association of this measure of SEP with chronic conditions, self-rated health, and mobility in logistic regression analyses, adjusting for school e

The cost of conflict in aphid societies.

Most social aphids are found within plant galls, inside of which clonally-derived family groups feed, and specialized larval castes forego reproduction and perform various cooperative tasks, including group defence. When unrelated aphids move between clones, conditions are ripe for conflict because galls and cooperative defence are shared resources that are vulnerable to exploitation. A key unknown is whether conflict is costly in aphid social groups. We show that diversity within groups is negatively correlated with performance in the North American social aphid, Pemphigus obesinymphae. A sub

Transitioning to college: Testing cognitive bias modification for interpretations as an inoculation tool for social anxiety in college first-years.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Reducing social anxiety development among incoming college students may improve college adjustment and mental health outcomes. This study tested whether cognitive bias modification for interpretations (CBM-I) reduces social anxiety and increases adjustment during the transition to college, and whether changes in outcomes would be mediated by changes in interpretation biases. METHODS: Participants (N = 73) were randomly assigned to a 3-session weekly CBM-I condition or symptom tracking (ST) control condition. Multilevel models were used to estimate within-person traj

The Cerebellum Gets Social: Evidence from an Exploratory Study of Cerebellar, Neurodevelopmental, and Psychiatric Disorders.

Social prediction is a key feature of social cognition (SC), a function in which the modulating role of the cerebellum is recognized. Accordingly, cerebellar alterations are reported in cerebellar pathologies, neurodevelopmental disorders, and psychiatric conditions that show SC deficits. Nevertheless, to date, no study has directly compared populations representative of these three conditions with respect to SC and cerebellar alterations. Therefore, the present exploratory study aimed to compare the SC profiles of individuals with cerebellar neurodegenerative disorders (CB), autism (ASD), bip

Continuous Theta Burst Stimulation over Right Temporoparietal Junction Reduces Prosocial Intertemporal Choice in Small but Not Large Monetary Amounts.

As social beings, people need to assist others in making intertemporal choices. The right temporoparietal junction (rTPJ) plays a crucial role in influencing prosocial behavior. Nevertheless, it remains unclear whether and how rTPJ modulates self-other intertemporal decision-making. In the current study, we mainly employed temporal social balance (i.e., "Self immediate - Self delay" and "Other immediate - Other delay" conditions) and temporal social imbalance (i.e., "Self immediate - Other delay" and "Self delay - Other immediate" conditions), with the identity of "Other" being a stranger. Links between social avoidance and frontal alpha asymmetry during processing emotional facial stimuli: An exploratory study.

Individuals who are socially avoidant actively remove themselves from opportunities for social interaction and have a strong desire for solitude. Although social avoidance is associated with a host of adjustment difficulties, its neural substrates remain under-explored. To address this gap, we conducted an exploratory study to compare electroencephalography (EEG) frontal alpha asymmetry (FAA) scores during processing emotional facial stimuli in socially avoidant and non-withdrawn comparison individuals. From an original sample of N = 384 undergraduate students, 25 avoidant and 27 comparison in

Social-Media-Based Mental Health Interventions: Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials.

BACKGROUND: Compared with other forms of online mental health interventions, programs delivered through social media apps may require less training and be more acceptable and accessible to various populations. During and after the pandemic, both the number of social media users and the prevalence of social-media-based mental health interventions increased significantly. However, to the best of the authors' knowledge, no meta-analysis so far has focused on rigorous social-media-based mental health interventions for general populations. OBJECTIVE: This preregistered meta-analysis synthesized fi

Hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis hyperresponsiveness is associated with increased social avoidance behavior in social phobia.

BACKGROUND: Social avoidance and inhibition in animals is associated with hyperresponsiveness of the glucocorticoid stress-system. In humans, the relation between glucocorticoid stress-reactivity and social avoidance behavior remains largely unexplored. We investigated whether increased cortisol stress-responsiveness is linked to increased social avoidance behavior in patients with social anxiety disorder (SAD). METHODS: Patients with SAD (n = 18) as well as two control groups of healthy participants (n = 22) and patients with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD; n = 17), respectively, perfor

Processing of increased frequency of social interaction in social anxiety disorder and borderline personality disorder.

We investigated how patients with social anxiety disorder (SAD) and patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD) process an increase in the frequency of social interaction. We used an EEG-compatible version of the online ball-tossing game Cyberball to induce an increase in the frequency of social interaction. In the first condition, each player received the ball equally often (inclusion: 33% ball reception). In the following condition, the frequency of the ball reception was increased (overinclusion: 45% ball reception). The main outcome variable was the event-related potential P2, an i

The effect of emotional working memory training on emotional and cognitive outcomes in individuals with elevated social anxiety.

BACKGROUND: Although cognitive-behavioural therapy is the gold standard psychological treatment for individuals with social anxiety disorder (SAD), it does not benefit everyone. Emotional working memory training (eWMT) is a promising alternative intervention. This study examined the effects of eWMT versus control training (CT) on emotional and cognitive outcomes in individuals with elevated social anxiety. METHODS: Forty participants with elevated social anxiety were randomly allocated to eWMT (n = 21) or CT (n = 19), each consisting of six training sessions. At pre- and post-training, partic

Social support, financial status, and depression among French healthcare workers one year after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: Early studies on factors associated with depressive symptoms among healthcare workers (HCWs) during the COVID-19 pandemic were primarily related to working conditions and exposure to the pandemic. Despite the socio-economic impact of the pandemic, research focusing on factors related to social support and financial situation was scarce. OBJECTIVES: This study investigated the association between HCWs' financial and social support, and the presence of depressive symptoms in France one year after the pandemic's onset. METHODS: This study used data from a cross-sectional, online, vo

Does recovery reduce stigma? Icelanders' attitudes toward individuals experiencing Schizophrenia and addiction.

Public stigma toward individuals with mental illness and addiction remains a major barrier to treatment, recovery, and social integration. While previous studies have documented widespread negative attitudes, less is known about the role of recovery narratives in shaping stigma. This study draws on the 2025 Icelandic Stigma Study to examine whether descriptions of recovery reduce preferred social distance from individuals experiencing schizophrenia, alcohol addiction, or heroin addiction. Data were collected using a nationally representative online panel (N = 1755). Respondents were randomly a

Sniffing out a solution: How emotional body odors can improve mindfulness therapy for social anxiety.

BACKGROUND: Human body odors (BOs) serve as an effective means of social communication, with individuals exposed to emotional BOs experiencing a partial replication of the sender's affective state. This phenomenon may be particularly relevant in conditions where social interactions are impaired, such as social anxiety. Our study aimed to investigate if emotional human BOs could augment the benefits of mindfulness-based interventions. METHODS: We enrolled 48 women with social anxiety symptoms and assigned them to groups exposed to happiness BO, fear BO, or clean air. Participants engaged in mi
