Parent-Adolescent Reciprocity in a Conflictual Situation Predicts Peer Interaction in Adolescents With ASD.

Parent-child reciprocity plays a signicant role in shaping children's social interaction skills. The development of conflict management skills throughout childhood and adolescence impacts the individual's social adjustment. The increase in conflictual interaction with one's parents during adolescence affects the transformation of parent-adolescent interaction into a more mutual, equal relationship. Adolescents with ASD and their parents may struggle in this type of interaction due to the adolescents' social and regulatory impairments, in addition to their dependence on their parents' involveme…

Social regulation of serotonin in the auditory midbrain.

The neuromodulator serotonin regulates auditory processing and can increase within minutes in response to stimuli like broadband noise as well as nonauditory stressors. Little is known about the serotonergic response in the auditory system to more natural stimuli such as social interactions. Using carbon-fiber voltammetry, we measured extracellular serotonin in the auditory midbrain of resident male mice during encounters with a male intruder. Serotonin increased in the inferior colliculus (IC) over the course of a 15 minute interaction, but not when mice were separated with a perforated barri…

Social functioning in autism: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Atypical social functioning is a core feature of autism, yet findings remain fragmented across components and development. We aimed to systematically integrate this literature and characterize the organization, development and moderators of social functioning in autism. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of behavioural studies published between January 1990 and August 2025, identified through PubMed, Web of Science and prior reviews, including studies with clinically diagnosed autistic individuals and neurotypical controls. A qualitative synthesis and two complementary quantita

The social effects of musical and lyrical content.

Music is a central component of human experience and a pervasive form of cultural engagement across societies. This review synthesizes evide … ent-consistent manner. Overall, depending on musical and lyrical content, music can influence human social interaction in both positive and negative directions. Given the ubiquity of music consumption worldwide, even small effects may accumulate into meaningful societal-level consequences over time.

Digital Social Technology and Social Connection in Youth.

OBJECTIVE: Digital social technologies, such as social media and online multiplayer video games (MVGs), have ushered in an era of peer relationships that evolve online, in addition to in person. This report reviews existing research about the dual role of social media and MVGs in shaping youth social connectedness, recognizing both their potential benefits and their associated risks on youth mental health. By providing evidence-based insights, it aims to inform strategies that optimize these technologies' advantages while safeguarding youth mental health and well-being. METHOD: This report re

Avoidant personality disorder and social functioning: A longitudinal, observational study investigating predictors of change in a clinical sample.

Avoidant personality disorder (AvPD) is an understudied, severe disorder. This study includes a clinical sample of AvPD patients (N = 460) treated within specialist mental health services. Social functioning was repeatedly assessed by self-report: Work and Social Adjustment Scale. Personality functioning (self-report), pretreatment occupational activity, civil status/family situation (self-report), and comorbidity; personality and symptom disorders were assessed at baseline. More extensive baseline impairment of social functioning was significantly associated with poorer personality functionin

Refraining from interaction can decrease fear of physical closeness during COVID-19.

Perception of peripersonal space (PPS) and interpersonal distance (IPD) has been shown to be modified by external factors such as perceived danger, the use of tools, and social factors. Especially in times of social distancing in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is vital to study factors that modify PPS and IPD. The present work addresses the question of whether wearing a face mask as a protection tool and social interaction impact the perception of IPD. We tested estimated IPD in pictures at three distances: 50 cm, 90 cm, and 150 cm in both social interaction (shaking hands) and witho…

[Distorted cognition of bodily sensations in subtypes of social anxiety].

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between subtypes of social anxiety and distorted cognition of bodily sensations. The package of questionnaires including the Social Phobia Scale (SPS) and the Social Interaction Anxiety Scale (SIAS) was administered to 582 undergraduate students. To identify subtypes of social anxiety, cluster analysis was conducted using scores of the SPS and SIAS. Five clusters were identified and labeled as follows: Generalized type characterized by intense anxiety in most social situations, Non-anxious type characterized by low anxiety levels in…

"Everyone Needs a Friend Sometimes" - Social Predictors of Long-Term Remission In First Episode Psychosis.

Background: Predictors of long-term symptomatic remission are crucial to the successful tailoring of treatment in first episode psychosis. There is lack of studies distinguishing the predictive effects of different social factors. This prevents a valid evaluating of their independent effects. Objectives: To test specific social baseline predictors of long-term remission. We hypothesized that first, satisfaction with social relations predicts remission; second, that frequency of social interaction predicts remission; and third, that the effect of friend relationship satisfaction and frequency w…

Effects of environmental manipulations on cocaine-vs-social choice in male and female rats.

Cocaine use disorder occurs in an environment where cocaine and other nondrug commodities are concurrently available. Preclinical drug-vs-nondrug choice procedures are one simplified method of modeling this complex clinical environment. The present study established a discrete-trial cocaine-vs-social interaction choice procedure in male and female rats and determined sensitivity of choice behavior to manipulations of reinforcer magnitude and non-contingent "sample" reinforcer presentation. Rats could make up to nine discrete choices between an intravenous cocaine infusion (0.1-1.0 mg/kg/inf) a…

Social odor choice buffers drug craving.

Social interactions are rewarding and protective against substance use disorders, but it is unclear which specific aspect of the complex sensory social experience drives these effects. Here, we investigated the role of olfactory sensory experience on social interaction, social preference over cocaine, and cocaine craving in rats. First, we conducted bulbectomy on both male and female rats to evaluate the necessity of olfactory system experience on the acquisition and maintenance of volitional social interaction. Next, we assessed the effect of bulbectomy on rats given a choice between social i…

Learning through interaction in children with autism: preliminary data from asocial-communication-based intervention.

The study evaluates a social-communication-based approach to autism intervention aimed at improving the social interaction skills of children with autism spectrum disorder. We report preliminary results from an ongoing randomized controlled trial of 51 children aged 2 years 0 months to 4 years 11 months. Participants were assigned to either a target treatment or community treatment group. Families in the target treatment group were given 2 hours of therapy and coaching each week in an intervention emphasizing social-interaction and the parent-child relationship. Children in the community treat…

Network analysis of the relationship between social support and quality of life in patients with epilepsy.

BACKGROUND: Identifying important types of social support for patients with epilepsy is valuable to construct an effective system for suppor … ort including emotional/informational support, tangible support, affectionate support, and positive social interaction. Our network visualization analysis represented the entire structure of the interrelationships between the four functions of social support and QOL. In addition, the relative importance of each function of social support were estimated by the centra …

Social processing by the primate medial frontal cortex.

The primate medial frontal cortex is comprised of several brain regions that are consistently implicated in regulating complex social behavi … l behaviors? In this chapter, we outline several neural algorithms necessary for mediating adaptive social interactions and discuss selected evidence from behavioral neurophysiology experiments supporting the role of the medial frontal cortex in implementing these algorithms. By doing so, we primarily focus on research in nonhuman primates and examine several key at …

An operant social self-administration and choice model in rats.

It is difficult to translate results from animal research on addiction to an understanding of the behavior of human drug users. Despite decades of basic research on neurobiological mechanisms of drug addiction, treatment options remain largely unchanged. A potential reason for this is that mechanistic studies using rodent models do not incorporate a critical facet of human addiction: volitional choices between drug use and non-drug social rewards (e.g., employment and family). Recently, we developed an operant model in which rats press a lever for rewarding social interaction with a peer and t…

Randomized controlled trial of propranolol on social communication and anxiety in children and young adults with autism spectrum disorder.

RATIONALE: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is characterized by impaired social communication and is also frequently characterized by co-occurring anxiety. Propranolol is widely utilized to treat performance and public speaking anxiety. Single-dose psychopharmacological challenge studies suggested benefits using propranolol for verbal tasks and social interaction. OBJECTIVE: We conducted a double-blinded, placebo-controlled trial of the β-adrenergic antagonist propranolol in ASD for social interaction, anxiety, and language. METHODS: Seventy-four participants with ASD, age 7-24 years, were enr…

Schizotypal traits and daily social functioning: Insights from ecological momentary assessment.

Elevated schizotypal traits are a risk factor for developing schizophrenia and other forms of psychopathology. Because schizophrenia is marked by social functioning difficulties, examining how schizotypal traits shape everyday interactions can clarify early risk processes. Although ecological momentary assessment (EMA) has been used to examine social interaction likelihood (how often people interact), depth (complexity of content in interactions), and enjoyment (pleasure derived from interactions) in people with schizophrenia, few have explored differences in social interactions across schizot…
