Morphological changes in the basolateral amygdala and behavioral disruptions associated with social isolation.

Social isolation and the disruption of established social bonds contribute to several physical and psychological health issues. Animal models are a useful tool for investigating consequences of social stress, including social isolation. The current study examined morphological changes in the basolateral amygdala (BLA) and affect-related behavioral and endocrine changes due to prolonged social isolation, using the translational prairie vole model (Microtus ochrogaster). Adult male prairie voles were either socially paired (control) or isolated from a same-sex sibling for 4 weeks. Following this

What is the best way to evaluate social prescribing? A qualitative feasibility assessment for a national impact evaluation study in England.

OBJECTIVES: Despite significant investment in social prescribing in England over the last decade, we still do not know if it works, or how models of social prescribing fit within wider health and care policy and practice. This study explores current service delivery structures and assesses the feasibility of a national evaluation of the link worker model. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted between May and September 2020, with 25 key informants from across social prescribing services in England. Participants included link workers, voluntary, community and social enterprise staf

Infant electroencephalogram coherence and early childhood inhibitory control: Foundations for social cognition in late childhood.

Social cognition is a set of complex processes that mediate much of human behavior. The development of these skills is related to and interdependent on other cognitive processes, particularly inhibitory control. Brain regions associated with inhibitory control and social cognition overlap functionally and structurally, especially with respect to frontal brain areas. We proposed that the neural foundations of inhibitory control and social cognition are measurable in infancy. We used structural equation modeling and showed that 10-month frontotemporal neuroconnectivity measured using electroence

Brief Report: measuring the effectiveness of teaching social thinking to children with Asperger syndrome (AS) and High Functioning Autism (HFA).

This is the first report from a large multiple baseline single-subject design study of children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). This brief report examines effectiveness of teaching a social cognitive (Social Thinking) approach to six males with Asperger syndrome (AS) or High Functioning Autism (HFA). Data included are restricted to pre- post-treatment comparisons of verbal and non-verbal social behaviors. Structured treatment and semi-structured generalization sessions occurred over eight weeks. Results indicated significant changes from pre- to post- measures on both verbal/nonverbal "e

Barriers and facilitators to injectable opioid agonist treatment engagement within a structural vulnerability context: a qualitative study of patient experiences in Vancouver, Canada.

BACKGROUND: Amidst a sustained drug poisoning crisis, there is growing recognition in Canada of the need to expand injectable opioid agonist treatment (iOAT). iOAT is an intensive treatment that involves the daily self-administration of hydromorphone or diacetylmorphine under healthcare provider supervision, typically accompanied by other health and social services. While this treatment has demonstrated effectiveness in reducing drug use-related risks, high threshold characteristics may also create barriers to engagement. This study examined patients' experiences of barriers and facilitators t

A Multidimensional Assessment of the Impact of Healthcare Volunteering in a War-Affected Setting.

Background: Medical students who volunteer during armed conflict may help sustain overwhelmed health services while experiencing concurrent social, academic, psychological, and physical consequences. However, no context-sensitive instrument has been available to assess these multidimensional benefits and burdens in active conflict settings. This study primarily aimed to develop and conduct an initial psychometric evaluation of the Volunteering Impact Scale (VIS) among medical students volunteering in Gaza and, secondarily, to characterize their volunteering experiences. Methods: A cross-sectio

Factor Structure and Psychometric Properties of the Impact of Illness Scale (IIS) in Individuals with First Episode of Psychosis in Spain.

The onset of an illness has the potential to induce profound changes in a person's life. However, being diagnosed with a physical illness may not carry the same impact as being diagnosed with a mental health disorder. Among them, psychotic disorders exhibit the highest level of social stigma and acceptance challenges, along with compromised social functioning, diminished quality of life, and disruptions in personal, social, and vocational domains. The Impact of Illness Scale (IIS) measures how an illness has adversely affected a person's life as perceived by that person. This study aimed to as

Psychometric Properties of the Spanish Version of the Gender Ideology and LGBTQ+ Lobby Conspiracies Scale (GILC): Evidence from a Chilean Sample.

Conspiracy beliefs targeting lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) individuals have attracted increasing attention in social and political psychology due to their role in prejudice, social exclusion, and resistance to social change. Despite growing interest in this phenomenon, validated instruments for assessing LGBTQ+-related conspiracy beliefs in Spanish-speaking populations remain limited. The present study aimed to adapt and evaluate the psychometric properties of the Spanish version of the Gender Ideology and LGBTQ+ Lobby Conspiracies Scale (GILC) in a Chilean sample. A

Determining the relative importance of risk and protective factors for adjustment disorder symptoms during the COVID-19 pandemic by mixed-effects random forests.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic exposed individuals to numerous psychosocial and health-related stressors associated with adjustment disorder (AjD) symptoms, yet it remains unclear which factors are most predictive. METHODS: Using mixed-effects regression random forests (MERF), a machine learning approach that combines random forests with mixed-effects regressions, we analyzed longitudinal data from 15,155 adults across 11 European countries collected at three time points between June 2020 and January 2022. We evaluated 245 candidate predictors, including sociodemographic, pandemic-related,

Psychometric properties of the multidimensional scale of perceived social support among university of Ibadan medical students.

INTRODUCTION: The Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) is widely used to measure perceived social support. Despite its extensive application, the scale's psychometric properties have not been tested among Nigerian medical students, who face high levels of psychological distress. This study aims to evaluate the reliability, validity and factor structure of the MSPSS among medical students at the University of Ibadan, Nigeria. METHOD: A cross-sectional observational study was conducted with 355 preclinical and clinical medical students from the University of Ibadan. Data w

Impaired communication ability in SOX11 syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Speech and language skills are important for social interaction and learning. This study characterised the communication abilities of verbal individuals with SOX11 syndrome using a standardised parent/carer questionnaire, the Children's Communication Checklist (CCC-2). METHOD: Thirteen parent/carers of verbal individuals (aged 5-19 years) diagnosed with SOX11 syndrome completed the CCC-2. In order to contextualise findings, responses were compared to norms and to data from Noonan syndrome, a relatively well-known genetic diagnosis associated with communication impairment. RESULTS

Optimization of industrial structure based on water environmental carrying capacity in Tieling City.

A system dynamics optimization model of the industrial structure of Tieling City based on water environmental carrying capacity has been established. This system is divided into the following subsystems: water resources, economics, population, contaminants, and agriculture and husbandry. Three schemes were designed to simulate the model from 2011 to 2020, and these schemes were compared to obtain an optimal social and economic development model in Tieling City. Policy recommendations on industrial structure optimization based on the optimal solution provide scientific decision-making advice to

Mental health burdens, typhoon and structural health inequities: evidence from a global perspective.

BACKGROUND: Against the backdrop of accelerating climate change and more frequent extreme weather events, typhoon disasters have become a major challenge to mental health. Based on the Social Determinants of Health theory and integrating the Cumulative Disadvantage Model with Structural Causal Influence analysis, this study evaluates how typhoon exposure affects the burden of mental health disorders and how these effects vary with social structural differences. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the mechanisms linking typhoon exposure to the burden of mental health disorders, and to quantify the moder

Dilemmas in providing resilience-enhancing social services to long-term social assistance clients. A qualitative study of Swedish social workers.

BACKGROUND: Long-term recipients of social assistance face barriers to social and economic inclusion, and have poorer health and more limited opportunities for improving their health than many other groups in the population. During recent decades there have been changes in Swedish social policy, with cutbacks in public benefits and a re-emphasis on means-tested policies. In this context, it is important to investigate the necessary conditions for social workers to offer social assistance and services, as well as the mediating role of social workers between public policies and their clients. Social anxiety symptoms and suicidal ideation in a clinical sample of early adolescents: examining loneliness and social support as longitudinal mediators.

Recent research has shown that social anxiety may be related to increased risk for suicidal ideation in teens, although this research largely has been cross-sectional and has not examined potential mediators of this relationship. A clinical sample of 144 early adolescents (72 % female; 12-15 years old) was assessed during psychiatric inpatient hospitalization and followed up at 9 and 18 months post-baseline. Symptoms of social anxiety, depression, suicidal ideation, loneliness, and perceived social support were assessed via structured interviews and self-report instruments. Structural equation

The Cerebellar Predictions for Social Interactions: Theory of Mind Abilities in Patients With Degenerative Cerebellar Atrophy.

Recent studies have focused on the role of the cerebellum in the social domain, including in Theory of Mind (ToM). ToM, or the "mentalizing" process, is the ability to attribute mental states, such as emotion, intentions and beliefs, to others to explain and predict their behavior. It is a fundamental aspect of social cognition and crucial for social interactions, together with more automatic mechanisms, such as emotion contagion. Social cognition requires complex interactions between limbic, associative areas and subcortical structures, including the cerebellum. It has been hypothesized that

Pattern of brain activation during social cognitive tasks is related to social competence in siblings discordant for schizophrenia.

Measures of social competence are closely related to actual community functioning in patients with schizophrenia. However, the neurobiological mechanisms underlying competence in schizophrenia are not fully understood. We hypothesized that social deficits in schizophrenia are explained, at least in part, by abnormally lateralized patterns of brain activation in response to tasks engaging social cognition, as compared to healthy individuals. We predicted such patterns would be partly heritable, and therefore affected in patients' nonpsychotic siblings as well. We used a functional magnetic reso
