The Hidden Spectrum Within Eating Disorders: Clustering Neurodivergent Traits and Sensory Sensitivity.

OBJECTIVE: Emerging research suggests that autistic traits and sensory sensitivities are prevalent among individuals with eating disorders (EDs), particularly females. Traditional diagnostic approaches may overlook the heterogeneity of neurodevelopmental features within this population. A person-centered approach could uncover meaningful subgroups and guide individualized treatment strategies. This study aimed to identify neurocognitive profiles among cisgender female ED patients, focusing on autistic traits, sensory sensitivity, social cognition, and clinical severity, through a dimensional a

Social Participation When Aging With an Early-Onset Neurological Disability: Protocol for Descriptive Qualitative Research.

BACKGROUND: Due to improvements in health care and rehabilitation, as well as better social conditions, individuals living with traumatic brain injury (TBI), multiple sclerosis (MS), or spinal cord injury (SCI) are living longer. It is therefore necessary to ensure the presence of social and health services adapted to the realities and specific needs of these populations aging with disabilities. Social participation is a key determinant of active aging and health. However, there is limited evidence regarding the social participation of these aging populations. To support the development of mor

A comparison of borderline personality features and level of personality functioning in explaining mentalizing capacity.

BACKGROUND: Numerous studies have demonstrated that the Alternative Model for Personality Disorders (AMPD) outperforms traditional categorical nosology (i.e., Section II) in predicting an array of salient clinical outcomes. However, despite the centrality of social-cognitive impairments in personality disorder, few studies have examined the superiority of the AMPD over Section II in predicting social-cognitive deficits. The current study addresses this gap by evaluating the incremental validity of AMPD-defined level of personality functioning (LPF) versus borderline personality features in pre

Constructivist Correlates to Anniversary Reactions Across Bereavement and Sexual Violence.

Anniversary reactions are an accepted part of bereavement, but recent research demonstrates that ARs can be seen across many traumatic events. The present study explores how constructivist theories could characterize ARs caused by the death of a loved one or sexual violence. N = 234 women answered questionnaires regarding their posttraumatic adjustment, meaning made of the trauma, trauma centrality, and social validation or invalidation of their trauma. Our data demonstrate that ARs are marked by statistically and clinically significant increases posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms. Partici

Controlled human infection with SARS-CoV-2 to study COVID-19 vaccines and treatments: bioethics in Utopia.

A number of papers have appeared recently arguing for the conclusion that it is ethically acceptable to infect healthy volunteers with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 as part of research projects aimed at developing COVID-19 vaccines or treatments. This position has also been endorsed in a statement by a working group for the WHO. The papers generally argue that controlled human infection (CHI) is ethically acceptable if (1) the risks to participants are low and therefore acceptable, (2) the scientific quality of the research is high, (3) the research has high social value, (4)

Predicting outcomes of primary care patients with major depression: development of a depression prognosis index.

OBJECTIVE: Depression research and practice focus increasingly on diverse patient populations with varying probabilities of response to clinical care. Prognostic indices use preexisting patient characteristics to estimate the probability of subsequent negative clinical outcomes and are useful tools for improving the study and care of diverse populations. Few such measures, however, have been developed for mental health conditions. This study developed and validated a depression prognosis measure for primary care patients with major depression. METHODS: Consecutive patients in 108 primary care

A scoping review of cultural adaptations of substance use disorder treatments across Latinx communities: Guidance for future research and practice.

INTRODUCTION: Much of the substance use disorder (SUD) treatment efficacy and effectiveness research is lacking consensus on which scientifically rigorous approach to employ for culturally adapting evidence-based treatments (EBTs) and evidence-based preventions (EBPs) for SUDs among Latinx communities. The aim of this paper is to provide a scoping review of the literature on cultural adaptations of SUD treatment for Latinx communities. METHODS: We examined the justifications for cultural adaptations, processes of adaptations, cultural adaptations described, and efficacy and effectiveness of c

The Primate Welfare INdicators project (PWIN): For an objective and standardised welfare assessment of non-human primates used in research.

Considering the welfare of animals used in research is crucial for both the validity of the results obtained and for the social acceptance of animal research. In Europe, the majority of the 5,784 primates currently used for scientific purposes are macaques (Macaca fascicularis and M. mulatta). Inadequate housing conditions can lead to various physiological and behavioural alterations that indicate poor welfare and can impact upon the quality of the data collected. Although there are a number of documents that summarise scientific knowledge on welfare issues and describe the basic needs of maca

Social factors and trachoma: a review of the literature.

Although great advances have been made in the clinical understanding of trachoma, the disease remains endemic in many parts of the world. Economic, environmental, cultural and behavioral factors continue to play an important role in trachoma transmission and progression. The trachoma literature however, contains relatively few studies which rigorously assess the importance of social factors. A critical review of the trachoma literature implicates individual and community hygiene as important risk factors for disease. Specific risk behaviors remain to be identified and validated as independent

The influence of olfactory stimuli on social cognition, prejudice and emotions: a systematic review of the literature.

This review synthesizes research on how olfactory stimuli influence social cognition, emotions, and prejudice, an area that remains understudied despite the olfactory system's direct neural connections to limbic regions like the amygdala and hippocampus. Following PRISMA 2020 guidelines, the authors systematically searched PubMed and Web of Science (2000-2025), identifying 21 eligible studies from 569 records. The literature reveals three core mechanisms through which odors exert their effects: (1) early perceptual modulation of social stimuli, (2) affective priming via disgust and valence sys

Neuroeconomics and myopia prevention: A framework for public health intervention.

Aims to outline the application of neuroeconomics in paediatric myopia prevention, offering a framework for designing public health interventions that target decision-making mechanisms such as intertemporal choice, social preferences and neurohormonal regulation. We synthesized theories and empirical evidence from neuroeconomics, psychology and neuroscience. Multimodal approaches-including behavioural tasks (e.g. delay discounting, Ultimatum Game), functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS), pupillometry and salivary assays-were used to evaluate how interventions influence neurocognitive pr

Toward characterizing brain fog in long COVID: correlates and impact on measurement metrics.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Brain fog is reported in 20–30% of patients with Long COVID. This study extends prior research linking brain fog to a limited set of psychosocial factors by examining a broader range of factors. We also examine how brain fog may impact the reliability and validity of self-reported measures. METHODS: This longitudinal cohort study utilized baseline (May–July 2020) and follow-up 3 (January–April 2023) data to compare individuals who strongly endorsed (n = 107) or strongly rejected (n = 374) having brain fog. We examined group differences in demographics, COVID-specific str
