A 4.2-year-old, male castrated Boxer was diagnosed with a dilated cardiomyopathy phenotype, complex arrhythmias and left-sided congestive heart failure, but died suddenly shortly after initial diagnostics were complete. Ultrasensitive cardiac troponin I was markedly elevated (9.345 ng/mL [reference range: 0-0.06 ng/mL]), and a Trypanosoma cruzi immunofluorescent antibody titer was positive at 1:80. Necropsy revealed a severe, necrotizing, histiocytic, lymphoplasmacytic pancarditis with intralesional algae consistent with protothecosis, as well as evidence of left-sided congestive heart failure

A six-year-seven-month-old female neutered Cavalier King Charles Spaniel was referred for the investigation of progressive dyspnea and hyphema in the right eye with secondary glaucoma. Previous medical history included a high-grade soft tissue spindle cell sarcoma removed from the cranial sternal region one year before. On presentation at the referral hospital, the dog was tachypneic and dyspneic. The heart rhythm was regular and there was a soft left-sided systolic murmur. Echocardiography identified the presence of a mass significantly occluding left heart inflow, with no other lesions ident

INTRODUCTION/OBJECTIVES: In humans with impaired right-sided cardiac function, the caudal vena cava (CVC) diameter serves as a marker of venous congestion. This study aimed to investigate whether ultrasonographic CVC variables could identify the presence of right-sided congestive heart failure (R-CHF) in dogs with right-sided heart disease (RHD).
ANIMALS: Fifty client-owned control dogs and 67 dogs with RHD were enrolled. The dogs with RHD were subdivided into the non-R-CHF (n = 43) and R-CHF (n = 24) groups.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We measured and compared the ultrasonographic CVC variables

A cat previously diagnosed with valvular aortic stenosis developed acute respiratory distress. A new continuous heart murmur was noted on physical exam. Echocardiographic examination revealed vegetative lesions on the aortic valve and continuously shunting blood flow from the aorta into the left atrium. Despite initial treatment for left-sided congestive heart failure, the cat died suddenly. In addition to confirming aortic valve endocarditis and an acquired aorto-left atrial shunt, pathological examination identified vegetative lesions on the luminal surface of the ascending aorta. Although a

INTRODUCTION: The left ventricular systolic longitudinal function, traditionally measured by M-mode-derived mitral annular plane systolic excursion (MAPSE), is reduced in feline hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) and further reduced in cats with left-sided congestive heart failure (CHF). The objectives of this study were to compare longitudinal displacement measured by tissue tracking (TT-LD) and MAPSE in feline HCM and assess these methods' ability to differentiate CHF from preclinical HCM. A further objective was to provide preliminary reference intervals for TT-LD.
ANIMALS: Eighty-five clie

Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is a frequent cause of cardiac disability, congestive heart failure (CHF), and arrhythmic death in dogs. The etiology of DCM is usually idiopathic/genetic, but some causes of a DCM phenotype are reversible. The disease is classified into preclinical (occult) and clinical (overt) stages; the latter stems from heart failure with reduced ejection fraction. DCM is further characterized by clinical, electrocardiographic, circulating biomarker, and imaging abnormalities. The diagnosis of clinical DCM with CHF is straightforward; however, identification of the preclinical

Septic pericarditis and cardiac tamponade associated with migrating grass awn foreign bodies is reported rarely in companion animals. We report such a case in a previously healthy, 9-year-old, neutered female, indoor-outdoor, domestic long-hair cat who presented for acute tachypnea. Large volume pericardial effusion and pericardial tamponade was identified by thoracic-focused assessment with sonography. Following removal of 108 mL of purulent pericardial effusion by pericardiocentesis, the cat improved. Cytologic examination of pericardial fluid demonstrated septic, suppurative inflammation, P

A 1.5-year-old, female-spayed mix-breed dog was presented with recurrent episodes of shaking and excessive panting attributed to drug-refractory ventricular arrhythmia (VA) characterized predominantly by incessant periods of ventricular bigeminy. The VA had a narrow QRS morphology, suggestive of an origin near the His bundle or fascicular system. Diagnostic evaluation found no structural heart disease or underlying etiology. Three-dimensional electroanatomic mapping and radiofrequency catheter ablation were pursued. Voltage mapping demonstrated normal bi-ventricular voltage (≥1.5 mV) without a

INTRODUCTION: Large breed (LB) dogs develop dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) and myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD). Echocardiography is required for a definitive diagnosis but is not always available. Our objective was to assess the clinical utility of thoracic radiographs alone and in combination with physical examination and electrocardiography findings for the prediction of clinically important DCM or MMVD in LB dogs.
ANIMALS: Four hundred fifty-five client-owned dogs ≥20 kg with concurrent thoracic radiographs and echocardiogram.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Medical records were reviewed and

An asymptomatic nine-year-old Dobermann Pinscher underwent a screening for dilated cardiomyopathy. Echocardiography revealed left ventricular eccentric hypertrophy and systolic dysfunction; the rest of the echocardiographic parameters were within normal limits. Holter monitoring demonstrated sinus rhythm as the dominant cardiac rhythm during the first hours of the recording. Then, during a period of physiologically enhanced vagal tone (sleep), spontaneous development of atrial flutter (AFL) associated with variable ventricular response was documented. Alternation between AFL and paroxysmal atr

INTRODUCTION: Mitral valve area (MVA) planimetry is used to diagnose and classify mitral stenosis (MS) in humans using two-dimensional and three-dimensional echocardiography (MVA2D and MVA3D). This study aimed to evaluate agreement, feasibility, and observer variability between MVA2D and MVA3D in English Bull Terriers (BT). Our hypotheses were (1) that the MVA of BT is generally smaller than that of breeds with similar body weight and (2) that these techniques could be used to diagnose MS in BTs.
ANIMALS: Twenty healthy BTs, 15 healthy Boxers, and 49 BTs with heart disease.

A 9-month-old French Bulldog with pulmonary stenosis (PS) underwent transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) and electrocardiogram-gated coronary computed tomography angiography (ECG-CCTA) for presurgical planning of pulmonary balloon valvuloplasty (PBV). Transthoracic echocardiography revealed severe PS and identified two distinct coronary ostia (left and right). Electrocardiogram-gated coronary computed tomography angiography showed a circumpulmonary course of the interventricular paraconal coronary artery, which abnormally originated from the right coronary artery. Based on this case report, th

A 3-year-old, 3.5-kg, neutered male, domestic shorthair cat presented with progressive lethargy, anorexia, coughing, and acute respiratory distress of two-week duration. Auscultation detected diffuse pulmonary crackles. Lung sounds were absent over the left cranial thorax. Sinus tachycardia was recorded. Thoracic radiographs revealed cardiac silhouette enlargement, dorsal displacement of the carina, and uniform, soft tissue opacity in the left cranial hemithorax. Transthoracic two-dimensional echocardiography revealed a large mass within and external to the pericardial space, effacing the peri

A 5-year-old male castrated Domestic Shorthair cat was presented to a veterinary specialty hospital for evaluation of large-volume pleural effusion. Echocardiography revealed a large intracardiac mass at the level of the interatrial septum impairing right atrial inflow resulting in lymphocytic pleural effusion and ascites. Differential diagnoses included lymphoma, hemangiosarcoma, rhabdomyosarcoma, chemodectoma, neurofibrosarcoma, myxoma, metastatic carcinoma or intracardiac thrombus, abscess or granuloma. Due to poor long-term prognosis and recurrent, large-volume pleural effusion, the cat wa

A 10-year-old male American Shorthair cat was presented after a witnessed syncopal event. A Holter monitor demonstrated a long QT interval and revealed a rhythm characteristic of torsades de pointes (TdP) coincident with a bout of syncope. On subsequent Holter monitor recordings, sotalol did not prolong the QT interval further and did not reduce the severity of the underlying ventricular tachyarrhythmias, but no TdP was identified. When another syncopal event occurred, sotalol was discontinued, and oral amiodarone and magnesium were started. This resulted in improvement in the ventricular tach
