Sodium chloride deficiency (SCD) was observed within the 1st year of life in 12 of 46 cystic fibrosis (CF) patients between July 1989 and September 1992. All patients showed sweating, loss of appetite, fever, vomiting, irritation, dehydration, weakness, and cyanosis during an attack. Mean plasma sodium, potassium and chloride levels were 122.9 (range 106-135), 2.5 (range 1.6-3.5), and 73.3 (range 60-90) mEq/l respectively. A randomised double-blind crossover study compared the clinical effectiveness of a 21-day treatment with 600 mg per day of sodium thiophene carboxylate and placebo in 33 patients with stable chronic bronchial disease. A laboratory study was undertaken to explore the possible interference of phenytoin with the immunosuppressive effect of methylprednisolone sodium succinate on skin graft survival in mice. The efficacy and safety of carbenicillin indanyl sodium were evaluated in 16 patients with acute or chronic bacterial prostatitis. Each patient received carbenicillin indanyl sodium (Geocillin) tablets, at a dosage of two 500 mg tablets (each tablet equivalent to 382 mg of carbenicillin) four times daily for either 14 days (acute patients) or 28 days (chronic patients).
