Optimizing soil water content under elevated temperature and CO2 enhances oilseed rape (Brassica napus) remediation of cadmium-contaminated soils.

Phytoremediation strategies for contaminated sites must consider the complex impacts of environmental changes on plant growth and heavy metal uptake. This study investigated the effects of soil water content (SWC: optimal, reduced and elevated), elevated temperature (25 °C vs. 21 °C), and elevated both temperature and CO2 concentration (25 °C, 800 ppm CO2vs. 21 °C, 400 ppm CO2) on energy crop oilseed rape (Brassica napus L.) efficiency to remediate Cd contaminated soil (1-50 mg kg-1). B. napus showed good tolerance to low and moderate Cd contamination, effectively removing Cd while offering po…

A Comparison of the QUECHERSER Mega-Method for Pesticide Determination in Loamy-Clayed Soil and the Effect of Organic Amendments on Pendimethalin, Oxyfluorfen, and Trifloxystrobin Soil Persistence.

The intensive use of pesticides has raised environmental concerns due to their persistence and slow degradation, posing ecotoxicological risks. Despite regulatory measures, pesticide application remains high, leading to soil and water contamination. To effectively monitor and mitigate these impacts, selecting an appropriate and efficient extraction method for detecting pesticides in soil is critical. This study evaluated the effectiveness of two extraction methods in soil-QuEChERS and QuEChERSER-and assessed the persistence of three commonly used pesticides. A test was conducted using 13 pesti…

Comparative Evaluation of Mediated Electrochemical Reduction and Chemical Redox Titration for Quantifying the Electron Accepting Capacities of Soils and Redox-Active Soil Constituents.

The electron accepting capacity (EAC) of soil plays a pivotal role in the biogeochemical cycling of nutrients and transformation of redox-labile contaminants. Prior EAC studies of soils and soil constituents utilized different methods, reductants, and mediators, making cross-study comparison difficult. This study was conducted to quantify and compare the EACs of two soil constituents (hematite and Leonardite humic acid) and 12 soils of diverse composition, using chemical redox titration (CRT) with dithionite as the reductant and mediated electrochemical reduction (MER) with diquat as the media…

Balkan endemic nephropathy and aristolochic acid I: an investigation into the role of soil and soil organic matter contamination, as a potential natural exposure pathway.

Aristolochic acids (AAs) are carcinogenic and nephrotoxic plant alkaloids present in Aristolochia species, used in traditional medicine. Recent biomolecular and environmental studies have incriminated these toxins as an etiological agent in Balkan endemic nephropathy (BEN), a severe kidney disease occurring in the Balkan Peninsula. The questions on how the susceptible populations are exposed to these toxins have not yet been clearly answered. Exposure to AAs through the food chain, and environmental pollution (soil/dust), could provide an explanation for the presence of BEN in the countries wh…

Influence of carbon-based organic fertilizer on soil microorganisms and vegetable growth in Sb-As co-contaminated soil: a synergistic mechanism of promotion and detoxification.

BACKGROUND: Antimony (Sb) and arsenic (As) co-contamination threatens crop production and food safety. Carbon-based organic fertilizers may simultaneously improve soil fertility, regulate microbial communities, and reduce metal(loid) mobility, but their performance in Sb-As co-contaminated vegetable systems remains unclear. METHODS: A pot experiment with pak choi was conducted to compare different carbon-based amendments, including magnesium sulfate-loaded biochar-based organic fertilizer (CBOF-M). Soil chemistry, pore-water elements, enzyme activities, rhizosphere microbial communities, plan…

Mineral Stabilization of Soil Organic Sulfur at the Continental Scale.

Declining atmospheric sulfur (S) deposition makes S an emerging limiting macronutrient for plants, yet the stability and dynamics of soil organic S-the largest terrestrial S pool supplying plant-available sulfate via mineralization-remain unclear. Across North American soils, total organic S is dominated by mineral-associated organic S (MAOS; 61% ± 26%); this pool is stabilized by mineral protection but saturates at ~600 μg S/g soil. Compared with particulate organic S (POS), which is relatively labile and does not saturate, MAOS is more decomposed, chemically diverse, and climate-sensitive. H…

Soil water harvest inspired by desert horned lizards, Phrynosoma platyrhinos.

Desert environments pose severe water scarcity challenges, leading to unique adaptations among native fauna. Notably, many species of desert horned lizards utilize a dermal drinking method, employing integumental microchannels to draw water from raindrops and moist soils via capillary action. However, the exact mechanism by which they eventually move the water collected between their jaws into their mouths remains elusive. Our research investigates this critical step in the drinking of desert horned lizards, Phrynosoma platyrhinos, revealing that the lizards use characteristic rhythmic jaw mov…

Previously Unrecognized Land-Use Control on Deep Soil CO2 Sink.

Land-surface models commonly assume that soil CO2 production is rapidly transferred out of the soil profile, effectively equating respiration with near-surface signals. However, persistent subsoil CO2 enrichment despite limited in situ production reflects bidirectional exchange of topsoil-respired CO2, suggesting that the surface-centric assumption may not be universally valid. Here we combine year-round, multi-depth field observations with process-based modeling (DeepCO2) to quantify the effects of land use (croplands, forests, and forest-cropland edges) and climate on soil CO2 production-tra…

Soil Biodiversity Supports Agroecosystem Services Under Multiple Global Change Factors.

Cereals are the key staple foods supporting a growing population under global change. Soil biodiversity sustains ecosystem multifunctionality (EMF) that underpins food production and soil agroecosystem services. Yet, the capacity of soil biodiversity to support EMF in cereal fields under multiple global change factors (GCFs) remains virtually unknown. Here, we conducted a field mesocosm experiment involving wheat, four levels of soil biodiversity, and up to eight distinct GCFs (warming, drought, salinity, heavy metals, nitrogen addition, microplastics, pesticides, and alkalinization) to invest…
