Ultrasound-assisted efficient and convenient method of extracting valuable metals (Ni, Co, and Cd) from waste Ni-Cd batteries using DL-malic acid.

Recycling waste Ni-Cd batteries has received much attention recently because of the serious environmental pollution they cause and to avoid the dissipation of valuable metals. Despite significant research, it is still difficult to efficiently recycle valuable and hazardous metals from waste Ni-Cd batteries in an economical and environmentally friendly manner. This study employed a novel process utilizing ultrasound-assisted leaching to recover Ni, Cd, and Co from waste nickel-cadmium (Ni-Cd) batteries. Organic DL-malic acid served as the leaching agent and H2O2 was employed as an oxidizing age

Untapped options to reduce waste from blister packaging for tablets and capsules.

PURPOSE: In Europe, most medicines are taken orally and primarily packaged as single solid oral dosage forms (SODF) in blister chambers (alveoli) arranged on blister cards. Blister cards are constructed as multilayer laminates of aluminum (Al) foils and/or various plastic polymers bonded together, forming the alveoli, which are separated by more or less large gaps. We calculated the amount of packaging material (and thus waste) generated annually for the packaging of the most commonly prescribed SODF in Germany and estimated how much waste could be saved by rearranging the alveoli. METHODS: F

Enhanced copper extraction from waste printed circuit boards using glycine after supercritical methanol pre-treatment: Process optimization, leaching kinetics, and thermodynamic analysis.

The disposal of waste-printed circuit boards (WPCBs) poses significant environmental and health risks, as they are a major component of e-waste containing hazardous materials. However, WPCBs also contain valuable metallic elements, making them important resources for recycling. To address the dual challenge of hazardous waste management and resource recovery, sustainable approaches for metal extraction from WPCBs are imperative. The present study, thus aimed to explore the use of glycine as an environment-friendly alternative to conventional inorganic acid-leaching agents for copper extraction

Two Birds with One Stone: One-Pot Conversion of Waste Biomass into N-Doped Porous Biochar for Efficient Formaldehyde Adsorption.

Converting agricultural solid waste into porous biochar for HCHO adsorption is considered as a "two birds with one stone" strategy, which can achieve the environmental goal of "treating waste with waste". Unfortunately, the HCHO adsorption performance of pristine biochar is generally unsatisfactory, which is derived from its poor surface activity and insufficient number of pores. In this study, a series of nitrogen-doped porous biochars with adjustable N-containing groups and porosity were synthesized by one-step pyrolysis of melamine and waste jujube pit in different mass ratios (NBC-x, x rep…

The reusage of different wastes by using the multiple's effect technique for sustainable gasoline production.

The unused garbage which is accumulating the landfills, such as raw materials, could be reused for synthetic gasoline production. This study presents the multiple's effect technique, which is based on the reusage of different non, party and sorted municipal solid wastes (MSW), or biogas for syngas, converted into synthetic gasoline. The novelties of this technique include a basic multiple's effect parameter (MUW), which present a level of waste sorting, an effect of oxygen inhibition into different wastes, a simplified mathematical model and simulation with an Aspen Plus® simulator using the r…

Life cycle analysis, leaching, technical and mechanical properties of wallboards composed of flue gas desulfurization gypsum and fly ash with carbon fibers.

This research focused on analyzing the physical, mechanical, and leaching properties of wallboards manufactured with gypsum (79-100% wt) derived from flue gas desulfurization (FGD-G) along with fly ash (0 and 20% wt). Two different heating temperatures of FGD-G, 120 °C and 130 °C, were used as well as two water-to-solid weight ratios, 0.4 and 0.6. Although fly ash is classified as hazardous waste (due to Se) and gypsum is considered inert waste, a leaching stabilization process was observed in a matrix consisting of 20% wt of fly ash and 80% wt of gypsum. However, the addition of fly ash, high

A novel and sustainable technique to immobilize lead and zinc in MSW incineration fly ash by using pozzolanic bottom ash.

Fly ash (FA) generated from Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) incineration contains high leaching potential of toxic metals. Calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) is the main hydration product of cement and can immobilize the leaching of toxic metals, formed by the reaction of Ca with pozzolanic Si in a highly alkaline environment. Toxic metals can be immobilized by the addition of pozzolan to FA residues (in lieu of cement), which is a source of Ca and provides an alkaline condition. The current study proposed a new approach of reusing the fine-fraction of MSW incineration bottom ash (BA), which contain…

Investigation of properties change in the reacted molten salts after molten chlorides cyclic thermal treatment of toxic MSWI fly ash.

To realize the thermal detoxification of municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) fly ash in a relatively mild environment, molten salts thermal treatment technology was proposed in our previous research, which showed good effects. To investigate the properties of molten salts (NaCl-CaCl2) during cycling reusing, the change of the main components and the physical properties of the used molten salts were estimated. Results showed that the salts in fly ash would dissolve into molten salts. During this process, the concentration of K+, SO42- kept increasing while Cl- was decreased. The changing …

Sequential chelator-assisted extraction and FeCl3/CaO-induced immobilization of hexavalent chromium from contaminated soil and fly ash.

Hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) poses persistent environmental risks due to its high solubility and toxicity in alkaline solid wastes. This study introduces a sequential chelator-assisted extraction and dual-step immobilization strategy integrating a biodegradable chelator (HIDS), ferric chloride (FeCl3), and calcium oxide (CaO) for efficient Cr(VI) remediation in solid wastes, including contaminated soil and alkaline biomass fly ash. During the chelator-assisted washing step, optimal Cr(VI) extraction from soil was achieved using 10 mmol L-1 HIDS at pH 3, with a liquid-to-solid ratio of 10:1 and…

Hydrophile-lipophile balance solid phase extraction of surface water organics: Fluorescent elution preference and overlooked fractions.

Fluorescent dissolved organic matter (FDOM) in surface water has broad implications on water quality research and operations. Solid phase extraction (SPE) is the most widely used technique to extract FDOM. However, fluorescent elution preferences by common solvents and content of quantifiable chromophores in waste fraction remain largely unknown, both quantitatively and qualitatively. In this work, the preferential selection of various types of FDOM captured by and lost from SPE as characterized by the fluorescence excitation-emission matrix (EEM) were investigated. Three elution solvents (met

Novel red mud waste-derived magnetic geopolymer spheres, made without the addition of any extra iron compounds, for the removal of wastewater contaminants.

In this work, and for the first time, the production of waste-based magnetic geopolymer spheres by a simple heat treatment under a reductive atmosphere is reported. Upon heat treatment, the iron oxide present in bauxite wastes (red mud), used as a solid precursor, is reduced to magnetite, thus producing magnetic spheres without the need for the addition of any secondary magnetic materials. The magnetisation of these mm-size materials reached 5.34 A m2 kg-1, suggesting they contain up to 6 wt% magnetite. This was demonstrated to be sufficient for their magnetic separation/removal, without the n

Simultaneous removal of rotavirus and adenovirus from artificial ground water using hydrochar derived from swine feces.

Hydrothermal carbonization technology can convert fecal waste into a valuable carbonaceous product referred to as hydrochar. We investigated the potential of fecal waste-derived hydrochar as an adsorbent for virus removal in water treatment. Swine feces was hydrothermally treated under two conditions: at 180 °C for 2 h and 230 °C for 7 h. The resulting solid products (hydrochar) were evaluated as virus adsorbents in water treatment. Simultaneous removal of pathogenic rotavirus (RV) and human adenovirus (HAdV) was investigated using a sand column set-up of 10 cm bed height with and without hydr
