Management of temporomandibular joint degenerative disorders with human amniotic membrane: Hypothesis of action.

Approaches providing the positioning of human amniotic membrane (HAM) within the intra-articular space of arthritic TMJs have never been investigated. This contrasts with the increasing amount of evidence suggesting the potential positive effects of HAM on a number of surgical conditions, even included the interpositional arthroplasty for TMJ ankylosis. Thus, the possible usefulness of HAM to restore joint functions in severely damaged TMJs could be hypothesized. Based on these premises, the clinical research question "Is human amniotic membrane positioning effective to reduce symptoms and res

Workplace learning from a socio-cultural perspective: creating developmental space during the general practice clerkship.

Workplace learning in undergraduate medical education has predominantly been studied from a cognitive perspective, despite its complex contextual characteristics, which influence medical students' learning experiences in such a way that explanation in terms of knowledge, skills, attitudes and single determinants of instructiveness is unlikely to suffice. There is also a paucity of research which, from a perspective other than the cognitive or descriptive one, investigates student learning in general practice settings, which are often characterised as powerful learning environments. In this stu

The Molecular Functions of MeCP2 in Rett Syndrome Pathology.

MeCP2 protein, encoded by the MECP2 gene, binds to DNA and affects transcription. Outside of this activity the true range of MeCP2 function is still not entirely clear. As MECP2 gene mutations cause the neurodevelopmental disorder Rett syndrome in 1 in 10,000 female births, much of what is known about the biologic function of MeCP2 comes from studying human cell culture models and rodent models with Mecp2 gene mutations. In this review, the full scope of MeCP2 research available in the NIH Pubmed (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/) data base to date is considered. While not all original researc

Lived Experience of Household Overcrowding Measure (LE-HOMe): A mixed-methods feasibility study to measure household overcrowding affecting family wellbeing, informed by lived experience.

BACKGROUND: Household overcrowding is a growing problem in England. It increases the risk of health outcomes including infections, injuries and poor mental health. For councils to monitor overcrowding at household level, methods are required to identify which homes are overcrowded and how it affects residents. Measures may need to be tailored for families, where overcrowding limits children's ability to play, study and socialise. STUDY AIM: To establish the feasibility of developing a method to identify households with families at high risk of overcrowding affecting their well-being. OBJECTI

Microgravity and Cellular Biology: Insights into Cellular Responses and Implications for Human Health.

Microgravity, defined by minimal gravitational forces, represents a unique environment that profoundly influences biological systems, including human cells. This review examines the effects of microgravity on biological processes and their implications for human health. Microgravity significantly impacts the immune system by disrupting key mechanisms, such as T cell activation, cytokine production, and macrophage differentiation, leading to increased susceptibility to infections. In cancer biology, it promotes the formation of spheroids in cancer stem cells and thyroid cancer cells, which clos

Deciphering immunosuppressive niches by spatial single-cell proteomics: spatial interaction networks and translational opportunities.

Although immunocheckpoint blocking therapy has been successful in a variety of cancers, its long-term response is still rare. The difference between initial clinical benefits and persistent disease control reflects the complexity of intratumor immunomodulation. People's attention is increasingly shifting from a single group of cells to the spatial environment in which these cells live. Tumor cells, immune cells and interstitial components cannot function independently; on the contrary, they form a local tissue structure, and their composition and structure affect immune activity. Analysis of the household distribution of trachoma in a Gambian village using a Monte Carlo simulation procedure.

Studies on the household distribution of trachoma have reached conflicting conclusions. This paper describes a cross-sectional survey of endemic trachoma in a Gambian village. Cases of active trachoma were mapped, and the compound and household distribution of the disease analysed by a Monte Carlo simulation procedure which takes into account differences in the size and age distribution within individual households. Significant clustering of active trachoma cases both by village compound (p less than 0.0001) and bedroom (less than 0.05) were detected supporting the concept that intra-familial

On-line, continuous measurement of extracellular striatal glucose using microdialysis sampling and electrochemical detection.

A sensitive, enzymatic glucose electrode was coupled with the microdialysis sampling technique to enable the continuous, on-line measurement of dialysate glucose. The glucose sensitive electrode was fabricated by immobilizing glucose oxidase onto the surface of an osmium-polyvinylpyrridine horse radish peroxidase gel (Os-gel-HRP) which had been cast coated onto a glassy carbon electrode. This 'bilayer' electrode generated a reductive current to glucose at a potential of 0 mV thereby minimizing faradic oxidative interferences. The system utilized the continuous mixing of two fluids immediately

Leather nights in the woods: homosexual encounters in a Dutch highway rest area.

This article describes a small-scale research on homosexual encounters in a Dutch highway rest area called "the Mollebos." Research was carried out on Monday evenings and nights, the so-called "leather nights," which attracted a specific group of patrons: men into leathersexuality and sadomasochism (S&M). Participant observation, informal conversations, and in-depth interviews made it possible to analyze spatial strategy as used by cruising men and the individual meanings patrons attach to outdoor leather cruising. It was found that in the Netherlands cruisers are no longer members of "a silen

Improving Policy Evaluations Of The Opioid Crisis.

With fatal opioid overdoses rising steadily between 1999 and 2022, researchers have tried to identify effective policy approaches that can stem the tide and mitigate associated harms. However, policy evaluations intended to inform policy choices may muddy the waters, particularly when they generate inconsistent findings. In this article, we discuss a unifying framework and language for presenting analyses using quasi-experimental methods evaluating opioid policies to facilitate greater understanding of similarities and differences across studies. We discuss key data, methods, and design issues

Re-thinking residential mobility: Linking lives through time and space.

While researchers are increasingly re-conceptualizing international migration, far less attention has been devoted to re-thinking short-distance residential mobility and immobility. In this paper we harness the life course approach to propose a new conceptual framework for residential mobility research. We contend that residential mobility and immobility should be re-conceptualized as relational practices that link lives through time and space while connecting people to structural conditions. Re-thinking and re-assessing residential mobility by exploiting new developments in longitudinal analy

Exploring perspectives regarding death cafés for people experiencing homelessness: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: People experiencing homelessness (PEH) often die at a younger age than the general population. Advanced ill-health often occurs late in its trajectory (if at all), leaving many PEH to die without adequate support from hospital-based, hospice-based or community-based palliative care services. Despite the high rate of bereavement and exposure to death among PEH, there are rarely opportunities for them to reflect on their experiences, thoughts and preferences around death or receive bereavement support. Death cafés are a global social franchise, providing a space for people to partici

Analog habitat health and safety protocol: replicable standard system for analyzing data related to human factors in simulations.

As space exploration emerges as the next frontier for humanity, challenges related to health and safety in isolated, confined, and extreme (ICE) environments become increasingly relevant. This study examines the development of integrated monitoring protocols to establish a replicable standard for collecting and analyzing human factors indicators in both analogous and real space missions, adapting existing approaches from polar environments. A one-month analog mission was conducted with a six-member crew, during which protocols were designed for pre-, during-, and post-mission phases. The metho

Glymphatic system dysfunction mediates amyloid deposition and cognitive impairment in Alzheimer's disease: a PET/MRI multimodality imaging study.

BACKGROUND: Abnormal glymphatic system may play a critical role in amyloid-β (Aβ) accumulation in mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer’s disease (AD) patients. This study aims to use diffusion tensor image analysis along the perivascular space (DTI-ALPS) and perivascular space volume fraction (PVSVF) to investigate the aberrant glymphatic functions and the association between Aβ deposition and clinical symptoms in AD spectrum. RESULTS: The ALPS index was significantly lower in AD patients compared to MCI and normal controls (NC) groups. Additionally, the AD group showed a significantl

Effects of microgravity on human iPSC-derived neural organoids on the International Space Station.

Research conducted on the International Space Station (ISS) in low-Earth orbit (LEO) has shown the effects of microgravity on multiple organs. To investigate the effects of microgravity on the central nervous system, we developed a unique organoid strategy for modeling specific regions of the brain that are affected by neurodegenerative diseases. We generated 3-dimensional human neural organoids from induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) derived from individuals affected by primary progressive multiple sclerosis (PPMS) or Parkinson's disease (PD) and non-symptomatic controls, by differentiati
