The optical and photoelectrochemical properties of Zn ethioporphyrin II (ZnEP) Langmuir films deposited on an SnO2-optically transparent electrode were investigated. Absorption and fluorescence spectra were utilized to control the film structure. The main three factors, in our opinion, act on the photovoltage, namely, film thickness, ZnEP aggregate formation and the total ZnEP concentration in the monolayer. It was shown that the photopotential decreases as the amount of ZnEP aggregates in the film decreases, and the photopotential increases with surface pressure transferred to the SnO2 layer;

In order to clarify the suitability of assay method, the stability of amoxycillin (AMX) in the acidic solution at pH 1.2 was determined by two different methods, ultraviolet absorption (UV) and HPLC methods. The determination was simultaneously performed for the same sample solutions. The data from HPLC method indicated that AMX degraded and the concentration of AMX in the acidic solution was decreased. A quick and economical method for the determination of nicotine and its main metabolite-cotinine in urine from smoking and passively smoking pregnant women is proposed using TLC-densitometry. A rapid, simple and direct assay procedure based on first-derivative spectrophotometry, using a zero-crossing and peak-to-base measurement at 234 and 324 nm, respectively, has been developed for the specific determination of dextromethorphan HBr and bromhexine HCl in tablets. This communication describes the interactions of salicylic acid (SA) with plant ascorbate peroxidase (APX). Contrary to a recent report (Durner, J., and Klessig, D. F. (1995) Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U. S. A. 92, 11312-11316) we show conclusively that ascorbate oxidation by APX is not inhibited by SA (10 mM), but that SA is a slow reducing substrate of this enzyme. The suggestion that SA-dependent inhibition of APX in planta may result in the elevation of H2O2 levels, which in turn acts as a second messenger in systemic acquired resistance signaling, is therefore not tenable. Gravitational field-flow fractionation is one of the simplest separation methods for biological materials. Its potential in parasitology is demonstrated for Trichomonas vaginalis, a parasite responsible for one of the most widespread sexually transmitted diseases. It was observed that this unicellular parasite can be purified in a culture medium with a recovery of 85% for the living trophozoites. The parasite retention characteristics were different when motile living and non-motile dead cells were eluted, motile cells being less retained than the non-motile cells.

A liquid chromatographic (LC) method was developed for the simultaneous identification and quantitation of oxytetracycline, tetracycline, and chlortetracycline in milk. Milk samples (5 mL) were deproteinized by adding 1 mL 1N HCl and 24 mL acetonitrile, and filtering. Dichloromethane and hexane were added to 15 mL filtrate to separate the water layer. Effects of both tricyclic and non-tricyclic drugs on the extrinsic Cotton effects of dicumarol bound to human alpha 1-acid glycoprotein (AGP) have been investigated. Basic tricyclic drugs caused the reversal of the signs of the induced Cotton effects of the circular dichroism (CD) spectra of the dicumarol-AGP system while the basic drugs not possessing tricyclic rings and acidic drugs decreased the observed ellipticities without changing the signs of its CD spectra. Equilibria and kinetics of cyanide binding to canine myeloperoxidase were studied. Spectral results support the presence of two heme binding sites; an isosbestic point at 444 nm and a linear Scatchard plot suggest that the binding affinity of cyanide to the two subunits of the enzyme is the same. The dissociation constant is 0.53 microM. The pH dependence of the apparent second order rate constant indicates the presence of an acid-base group on the enzyme with a pKa of 3.8 +/- 0.1. The protonated form of cyanide binds to the basic enzyme with a rate constant of (4.3 +/- 0.3) x 10(6) M-1 s-1.

Tablets (100 mg), containing microdose quantities of micronized model drug (1 microgram--10 mg), were produced from interactive powder mixtures which had been fluid bed granulated. A number of barbiturates inhibit uricase from porcine liver competitively, the Ki, values being in the range 1 to 13 X 10(-3) mol/L. In general the Ki increases as the size of the substituents at C-5 increases.
