Frontal and temporal cortical functional recovery after electroconvulsive therapy for depression: A longitudinal functional near-infrared spectroscopy study.

While the efficacy and tolerability of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) for depression has been well established, the acute effects of ECT on brain function remain unclear. Particularly, although cognitive dysfunction has been consistently observed after ECT, little is known about the extent and time course of ECT-induced brain functional changes, as observed during cognitive tasks. Considering the acute antidepressant effects of ECT on depression, aberrant brain functional responses during cognitive tasks in patients with depression may improve immediately after this treatment. To clarify chan

Prefrontal hemodynamic after-effects caused by rebreathing may predict affective states - A multimodal functional near-infrared spectroscopy study.

Brain activity has been shown to be influenced by respiratory behavior. Here, we evaluated whether respiration-induced hypo- or hypercapnia may support differentiation between physiological versus pathological respiratory behavior. In particular, we investigated whether systemic physiological measures could predict the brain's time-frequency hemodynamics after three respiratory challenges (i.e., breath-holding, rebreathing, and hyperventilation) compared to resting-state. Prefrontal hemodynamics were assessed in healthy subjects (N = 27) using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). Sys

A "NIRS" death experience: a reduction in cortical oxygenation by time-resolved near-infrared spectroscopy preceding cardiac arrest.

Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) has been used effectively post-cardiac-arrest to gauge adequacy of resuscitation and predict the likelihood of achieving a return of spontaneous circulation. However, preempting hemodynamic collapse is preferable to achieving ROSC through advanced cardiac life support. Minimizing "time down" without end-organ perfusion has always been a central pillar of ACLS. In many critically ill patients there is a prolonged phase of end-organ hypoperfusion preceding loss of palpable pulses and initiation of ACLS. Due to the relative infrequency of in-hospital cardiac arre

Hyperfunction of left lateral prefrontal cortex and automatic thoughts in social anxiety disorder: A near-infrared spectroscopy study.

BACKGROUND: Patients with social anxiety disorder (SAD) experience unusual fear in normal social situations. The verbal fluency task (VFT) was administered while subjects were undergoing near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) scanning. The purpose of VFT was to examine the functions of the frontal and temporal lobes. METHODS: Subjects included 145 drug-naïve patients with SAD and 152 healthy controls (HCs). All subjects underwent psychological testing to determine levels of anxiety and depression and to evaluate cognition. RESULTS: The scores of patients with SAD indicated significantly higher an

Near-infrared spectroscopy assessed cerebral oxygenation during open abdominal aortic aneurysm repair: relation to end-tidal CO2 tension.

During open abdominal aortic aneurism (AAA) repair cerebral blood flow is challenged. Clamping of the aorta may lead to unintended hyperventilation as metabolism is reduced by perfusion of a smaller part of the body and reperfusion of the aorta releases vasodilatory substances including CO2. We intend to adjust ventilation according end-tidal CO2 tension (EtCO2) and here evaluated to what extent that strategy maintains frontal lobe oxygenation (ScO2) as determined by near infrared spectroscopy. For 44 patients [5 women, aged 70 (48-83) years] ScO2, mean arterial pressure (MAP), EtCO2, and vent

Abdominal near-infrared spectroscopy in preterm infants: a comparison of splanchnic oxygen saturation measurements at two abdominal locations.

BACKGROUND: Splanchnic tissue oxygenation monitoring has been performed at both the liver and the infra-umbilical regions. It is unknown whether these measurements could be substituted one for the other when interpreting splanchnic oxygenation since they have not been measured simultaneously before. AIMS: To evaluate the feasibility and safety of liver and infra-umbilical near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) monitoring in preterm infants with suspected necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) and to assess the correlation and agreement between NIRS measurements performed simultaneously at the two abdomin

A semi-immersive virtual reality incremental swing balance task activates prefrontal cortex: a functional near-infrared spectroscopy study.

Previous functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) studies indicated that the prefrontal cortex (PFC) is involved in the maintenance of the postural balance after external perturbations. So far, no studies have been conducted to investigate the PFC hemodynamic response to virtual reality (VR) tasks that could be adopted in the field of functional neurorehabilitation. The aim of this fNIRS study was to assess PFC oxygenation response during an incremental and a control swing balance task (ISBT and CSBT, respectively) in a semi-immersive VR environment driven by a depth-sensing camera. It wa

Monitoring of regional tissue oxygenation with near-infrared spectroscopy during the early postoperative course after superior cavopulmonary anastomosis.

OBJECTIVES: Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) offers continuous non-invasive monitoring of regional tissue oxygenation. We evaluated NIRS monitoring during the postoperative course after superior cavopulmonary anastomosis in patients with hypoplastic left heart syndrome and anatomically related malformations. METHODS: Cerebral (cSO(2)) and somatic (sSO(2)) tissue oxygenations were recorded for 48 h and compared with routine measures of intensive care monitoring. Changes in parameters in the case of postoperative complications were evaluated. RESULTS: Data were obtained from 32 patients. Medi

Continuous monitoring of absolute cerebral blood flow by near-infrared spectroscopy during global and focal temporary vessel occlusion.

Treatment of intracranial aneurysms by surgical clipping carries a risk of intraoperative ischemia, caused mainly by prolonged temporary occlusion of cerebral arteries. The objective of this study was to develop a near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) technique for continuous monitoring of cerebral blood flow (CBF) during surgery. With this approach, cerebral hemodynamics prior to clipping are measured by a bolus-tracking method that uses indocyanine green as an intravascular contrast agent. The baseline hemodynamic measurements are then used to convert the continuous Hb difference (HbD) signal (H

Near-infrared spectroscopy as a possible device for continuous monitoring of arterial carbon dioxide tension during cardiac surgery.

BACKGROUND: Insufflation of carbon dioxide (CO(2)) to the operative field has been used to prevent major organ injury attributed to air embolisms in cardiac surgery. However, it may be preferable to avoid hypercapnia induced by CO(2) insufflation, owing to its potentially harmful effect. To investigate the effectiveness of near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) as a possible method for continuous monitoring of arterial CO(2) tension during cardiac surgery, we evaluated the correlation between the change in arterial CO(2) tension and the change in regional cerebral oxygen saturation (rScO(2)) obtain

Who fails the Iowa Gambling Test (IGT)? Personality, neuropsychological, and near-infrared spectroscopy findings in healthy young controls.

The Iowa gambling task (IGT) was designed to assess clinically relevant decision-making impairment, yet some studies find high rates of failure in otherwise healthy control groups. The current study examined variables potentially related to IGT failure, including negative affect, intellect, personality, and executive functioning, in a well-screened sample of healthy young adults. In addition, cerebral oxygenation (near-infrared spectroscopy) was assessed. Results indicated that those who failed the IGT had lower estimated intellect, made more commission errors on the 2-back task, and showed le

The value of near-infrared spectroscopy measured cerebral oximetry during carotid endarterectomy in perioperative stroke prevention. A review.

BACKGROUND: Transcranial Doppler (TCD) for identification of patients at risk for cerebral hyperperfusion syndrome (CHS) following carotid endarterectomy (CEA) cannot be performed in 10-15% of patients because of the absence of a temporal bone window. Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) may be of additional value in these patients. We aimed to (1) compare the value of NIRS related to existing cerebral monitoring techniques in prediction of perioperative cerebral ischaemia and (2) compare the relation between NIRS and the occurrence of CHS. METHODS: A systematic literature search relating to NIR

Decreased prefrontal activation during letter fluency task in adults with pervasive developmental disorders: a near-infrared spectroscopy study.

Functional neuroimaging studies have suggested that dysfunction of prefrontal cortex (PFC) is present in persons with pervasive developmental disorders (PDD). Recently, the development of near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) has enabled noninvasive bedside measurement of regional cerebral blood volume. Although NIRS enables the noninvasive clarification of brain functions in many psychiatric disorders, it has not yet been used to examine subjects with PDD. The aim of our study was to conduct an NIRS cognitive activation study to verify PFC dysfunction in PDD. The subjects were 10 adults with PDD

Rapid qualitative and quantitative identification of adulterated wheat flour in edible milk powder by a portable near-infrared spectroscopy.

Due to its high nutritional value and increasing global demand, milk powder is susceptible to adulteration for economic reasons. This study aimed to use a portable near-infrared (NIR) spectrometer to rapidly detect and analyze wheat flour adulteration in milk powder, covering both qualitative and quantitative tasks. The qualitative analysis involved identifying the presence and extent of adulterants in the milk powder samples using spectral data. The quantitative analysis aimed to measure the amount of wheat flour accurately added. For the qualitative analysis, we processed the NIR spectral da

Near-infrared spectroscopy for urine-based cancer detection: a systematic characterization of the analytical challenges of a complex biofluid matrix.

Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) of urine offers an attractive route to non-invasive cancer screening. However, the analytical complexity of this matrix has not been systematically characterized. This study comprehensively evaluated the ability of NIRS to distinguish between the control group and patients with kidney or prostate cancer using urine samples (n = 85). Results revealed that 93.51% of total spectral variance reflects physiological and measurement sources unrelated to cancer, rendering conventional chemometric approaches, aquaphotomics, and individual wavelength feature selection i

The association between anhedonia and prefrontal cortex activation in patients with major depression: a functional near-infrared spectroscopy study.

This study investigated cerebral blood flow characteristics using functional nearinfrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) in agomelatine-treated depressed patients with anhedonia. The level of anhedonia was assessed by the Snaith Hamilton Rating Scale (SHAPS) and Montgomery Åsberg Depression Rating Scale 5-item (MADRS 5-item) score. All 84 patients were evaluated on the day of the study initiation and followed at week 1, 4 and 8 after the study initiation. Graph theory-based network analysis showed 2-back task-modulated global efficiency (adjusted B = 0.055, 95% CI = 0.043 - 0.066) and local efficiency (
