Social performance deficits in social anxiety disorder: reality during conversation and biased perception during speech.

Cognitive models emphasize that patients with social anxiety disorder (SAD) are mainly characterized by biased perception of their social performance. In addition, there is a growing body of evidence showing that SAD patients suffer from actual deficits in social interaction. To unravel what characterizes SAD patients the most, underestimation of social performance (defined as the discrepancy between self-perceived and observer-perceived social performance), or actual (observer-perceived) social performance, 48 patients with SAD and 27 normal control participants were observed during a speech

Does the speech of Turkish-speaking phonologically disordered children differ from that of children speaking other languages?

How phonological disorders should be categorized in Turkish children remained vague for a long period of time due to a lack of normative studies. This paper reports the phonological systems of 70 phonologically disordered children, aged 4;0-8;0, in comparison with the results of a normative study of 665 Turkish-speaking children, aged 1;3-8;0. The current focus is on two aspects of development, mainly the differences between disordered and normal consonant acquisition and phonological error patterns from both longitudinal and cross-sectional data. The second concern of the paper is to sub-clas

[Pathological changes in the middle ear and delayed speech development. Preventable sequelae of disordered tube function and seromucotympanum].

Serous otitis media is a frequent disorder, as 80-90% of children up to the age of 8 years experience at least one episode of middle ear effusion. When deciding on a therapeutic strategy, it should be taken into consideration that there is a spontaneous recovery rate of about 95%. Initially, conservative treatment should be given (Valsalva maneuver), as the efficacy of drug therapy is questionable. In our opinion, in cases of persistent middle ear effusion an adenoidectomy plus myringotomy should be performed. In cases of recurrence, a ventilation tube should be inserted to reduce eardrum path

A shift of treatment approach in speech language pathology services for children with speech sound disorders - a single case study of an intense intervention based on non-linear phonology and motor-learning principles.

Even though there are documented benefits of direct intensive intervention for children with speech sound disorders (SSDs), the intensity given at Swedish Speech Language Pathology services rarely exceeds once a week. Also, indirect therapy approaches are commonly employed. The purpose of the present case study was to investigate the effects of an intensive specialist therapy, based on non-linear phonological analysis and motor learning principles. The participant was a boy aged 4:10 years with severe SSD, who previously had received indirect therapy from age 3 with, very limited results. A si

Predicting PANSS symptoms in schizophrenia spectrum disorders using speech only: an international, multi-centre, computational secondary analysis across multiple languages.

BACKGROUND: Speech carries cues to variation in mental state in schizophrenia, typically indexed with clinician-rated scales such as Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS). In this study, we aggregate multi-centre recordings to assemble a large corpus and assess symptom-prediction models at scale, to enable rater-independent, efficient, and reproducible assessments for early detection of relapse-related signals from speech. METHODS: In this computational secondary analysis, we compiled data from 453 patients with schizophrenia spectrum disorders, recruited between 2005 and 2026 from ten

Speech categorization consistency is associated with language and reading abilities in school-age children: Implications for language and reading disorders.

Speech perception is fundamental to language and reading abilities. While these skills are correlated, most studies examining the role of speech perception on outcomes do not test both concurrently. Moreover, traditional forced-choice tasks have limitations in accurately indexing these relationships. This study used a visual analog scaling task-a continuous measure of speech categorization-to examine speech categorization alongside conventional language and reading assessments in a large sample of children (n = 237), including those with language and/or reading disabilities. Children with poor

Efficacy of telepractice, an alternative therapy tool during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic, for speech disorders related to congenital anomalies.

Since telepractice regulation does not yet exist in Japan, we assessed telepractice efficacy and the level of satisfaction with telepractice versus that with face-to-face practice (FTFP) in speech therapy to establish effective telepractice in Japan. Changes in the number of therapy sessions and therapy levels were compared between telepractice and FTFP sessions conducted during the study period. Additionally, the patients' parents completed a questionnaire survey regarding telepractice. The mean number of sessions was not significantly different between the two types of therapy; the therapy l

Understanding the Use and Importance of Voice Stimulability Assessment Among Speech-Language Pathologists Who Treat Voice Disorders: An International Survey.

PURPOSE: Stimulability assessment is a common part of the voice evaluation, but little information exists about what is involved in the process, how it is measured, and how it impacts therapeutic decisions. The aim of this study was to establish the frequency, circumstances, techniques, and rationale for stimulability assessment among voice-specialized speech-language pathologists (SLPs). METHOD: An anonymized online survey was distributed to voice-specialized SLPs through email lists, online communities, and professional networks. Surveys queried clinical demographic information, respondents

Facial-muscle weakness, speech disorders and dysphagia are common in patients with classic infantile Pompe disease treated with enzyme therapy.

Classic infantile Pompe disease is an inherited generalized glycogen storage disorder caused by deficiency of lysosomal acid α-glucosidase. If left untreated, patients die before one year of age. Although enzyme-replacement therapy (ERT) has significantly prolonged lifespan, it has also revealed new aspects of the disease. For up to 11 years, we investigated the frequency and consequences of facial-muscle weakness, speech disorders and dysphagia in long-term survivors. Sequential photographs were used to determine the timing and severity of facial-muscle weakness. Using standardized articulati…

An exploration of UK speech and language therapists' treatment and management of functional communication disorders: A mixed-methods online survey.

BACKGROUND: Functional Communication Disorders (FCDs) are one specific presentation of Functional Neurological Disorder (FND). FND is characterised by neurological symptoms, such as sensory and motor symptoms, which are not explained by neurological disease. Speech and language therapists (SLTs) have expertise in managing communication disorders, including FCDs, though is not known is what clinicians do in practice to treat and manage FCDs. AIM: To explore the clinical practices of SLTs who regularly manage FCDs in the UK, including the assessment and intervention approaches taken. METHODS &
