BACKGROUND: Healthcare workers risk stress, burnout and fatigue from time pressures, insufficient workload control and ineffective support. Unaddressed, these issues can lead to the attrition of the workforce. Retention of speech and language therapists (SLTs) is an ongoing concern, but little is known about the relationship between SLT wellbeing and their workplaces.
AIMS: The aims of the present study were therefore to: (1) Explore the levels of job satisfaction and general wellbeing of SLTs working clinically. (2) Describe the occupational environments of SLTs working clinically. (3) Inves

BACKGROUND: Over 200,000 patients are referred onto the suspected head and neck cancer (HNC) pathway annually in the UK, with around 3% receiving a cancer diagnosis. With new HNC advancements in identifying patients at low risk of a cancer diagnosis, one proposal is a speech and language therapy (SLT)-led first point of contact clinic for low-risk patients presenting with voice or swallowing symptoms.
AIMS: To explore ear, nose and throat (ENT) surgeons' views regarding this model.
MATERIALS & METHODS: The study used a qualitative study design using semi-structured interviews. Transcribed re

BACKGROUND: Communication disorders affect both sexes and people from all ethnic groups, but members of minority ethnic groups and males in the UK are underrepresented in the speech and language therapy profession. Research in the area of recruitment is limited, but a possible explanation is poor awareness and understanding of speech and language therapy as a profession.
AIMS: To investigate factors influencing attitudes to a career in speech and language therapy amongst UK school and college students focusing on the similarities and differences between males and females, and between minority

Purpose The purpose of this article is to examine the current state of counseling curriculum within the discipline. The last systematic survey of counseling curriculum within the disciplines of communication sciences and disorders was completed with data from 1983 (McCarthy et al., 1986). The Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (2017) states that counseling should be included in accredited programs but does not specify to what extent. Currently, there are no standards to specify number of credits, need for a stand-alone course, or guidance regarding con…

Speech and language measures during grade school predict adolescent speech-language outcomes in children who receive cochlear implants (CIs), but no research has examined whether speech and language functioning at even younger ages is predictive of long-term outcomes in this population. The purpose of this study was to examine whether early preschool measures of speech and language performance predict speech-language functioning in long-term users of CIs. Early measures of speech intelligibility and receptive vocabulary (obtained during preschool ages of 3-6 years) in a sample of 35 prelingual

PURPOSE: To investigate how speech-language pathologists (SLPs) report involving parents in intervention for phonology-based speech sound disorders (SSDs), and to describe the home practice that they recommend. Further aims were to describe the training SLPs report providing to parents, to explore SLPs' beliefs and motivations for involving parents in intervention, and to determine whether SLPs' characteristics are associated with their self-reported practice.
METHOD: An online survey of 288 SLPs working with SSD in Australia was conducted.
RESULT: The majority of SLPs (96.4%) reported invol

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: To verify the discriminatory ability of human and synthesized voice samples.
STUDY DESIGN: This is a prospective study.
METHODS: A total of 70 subjects, 20 voice specialist speech-language pathologists (V-SLPs), 20 general SLPs (G-SLPs), and 30 naive listeners (NLs) participated of a listening task that was simply to classify the stimuli as human or synthesized. Samples of 36 voices, 18 human and 18 synthesized vowels, male and female (9 each), with different type and degree of deviation, were presented with 50% of repetition to verify intrarater consistency. PURPOSE: This study aimed to explore the experiences of adult communication partners (CPs) of individuals with acquired brain injury (ABI) who received communication training and, where reported, the experiences of individuals with ABI who attended or participated in the training.
METHOD: A qualitative evidence synthesis was conducted. Electronic searches were completed in CINAHL Ultimate, APA PsycInfo, APA PsycArticles, Medline, Embase, AMED, Scopus, NeuroBITE, and PubMed for studies published until August 2025. Included studies described an intervention directed at adult CPs where the progr

This construction of self-identity pre- and post-Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) in a single case study is described. A life history research methodology was employed to explore the experience of a survivor of TBI, using a single case study design. The participant was a 31-year-old White South African male who sustained TBI while on duty in the army. Multiple interviews were conducted with the participant to allow in-depth exploration of his self-identity formation pre- and post-TBI. Data analysis entailed transcribing the interviews, crafting a research story (narrative analysis) and an analysis

BACKGROUND: In addition to cognitive, linguistic, neurobehavioral, and physical challenges, children and adolescents with traumatic brain injury can have a dysarthria that compromises intelligibility and speaking effort.
OBJECTIVE: The focus of this article is on an aeromechanical approach to understanding, evaluating, and treating the moderate-severe dysarthrias in these children.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this article was to obtain and organize information from instructors who teach course work on the subject of children's speech sound disorders (SSD) regarding their use of teaching resources, involvement in students' clinical practica, and intervention approaches presented to students. Instructors also reported if they taught students to use nonspeech oral motor exercises (NSOMEs) to remediate children's SSD.
METHOD: A questionnaire was mailed to 236 speech-language pathology preprofessional programs in the United States that are accredited by the Council of Academic A…

Progressive nonfluent aphasia (PNFA) is one of the 3 clinical presentations of frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD), the other 2 being frontotemporal dementia and semantic dementia (SD). PNFA and SD, both representing relentlessly progressive language impairment in the realm of FTLD, may share a large part with primary progressive aphasia (PPA). A salient distinction between PPA and PNFA or SD is that PPA includes another clinical type, namely, logopenic/phonemic aphasia (LPA), which is not represented in FTLD. This is primarily because LPA is usually caused by Alzheimer's disease (AD) and

BACKGROUND: Spoken and written language are closely linked, and Speech and Language Therapists (SLTs) have expertise in the language skills that support both. However, unlike countries such as the US and Australia, UK SLTs lack clear guidance on their role in written language. This study explores the views of SLTs working with adults (aged 16+) and children to inform consideration of a UK position statement.
AIMS: To examine UK SLTs' views on their role and scope of practice in written language assessment and intervention, and to ascertain whether a position statement is needed.

The purpose of this study was to develop and test a training protocol for the perceptual evaluation of dysphonia. A group of 38 inexperienced listeners participated in a three-phase experiment: a pretest to evaluate their initial performance on categorization of dysphonic voices, a training phase, and a posttest to detect training-related changes in performance. In parallel, a different group of 14 listeners who were experts in voice assessment took a test that was identical to the posttest taken by the inexperienced subjects. The corpus used for the tests was made up of recordings of 142 voic

This study assessed listener agreement levels for nasality ratings, and the strength of relationship between nasality ratings and nasalance scores on one hand, and listener clinical experience and formal academic training in cleft palate speech on the other. The listeners were 12 adults who represented four levels of clinical experience and academic training in cleft palate speech. Three listeners were teachers with no clinical experience and no academic training (TR), three were graduate students in speech-language pathology (GS) with academic training but no clinical experience, three were c…

OBJECTIVE: India has a significant burden of Head and Neck cancer (HNC) patients. Patients afflicted with HNC often encounter difficulties i … practice for HNC patients offered across Hospitals in India. All HNC patients do not get access to speech-language pathology services. Developing standardized protocols towards early evaluation, intervention and enhancing compliance could improve SLP-led rehabilitation of HNC patients in India.
