BACKGROUND: In ankylosing spondylitis (AS), the spine with osteoporotic changes is fragile and vulnerable to trauma. Patients may develop spinal pseudoarthrosis (SP), whose clinical features are usually misdiagnosed as a tuberculous infection. This study reports our experience with surgical treatment for SP in AS.

Abstract Vitiligo is a very common disease and is suspected to be autoimmune in its pathogenesis. Many autoimmune complications, such as Hashimoto's thyroiditis, are reportedly associated with vitiligo. The pathogenesis of ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is also suspected to be autoimmune, triggered by some infection. We report a 56-year-old man with concurrent vitiligo and AS, and suggest that both diseases could have a common autoimmune background.

The authors report their findings in a retrospective study of 151 cases of infectious spondylitis collected between 1970 and 2000. Diagnosis was based on bacteriological or pathological confirmation or on clinical, radiological and outcome arguments. Among 151 cases of infectious spondylitis diagnosed and treated, 110 were due to tuberculosis and 41 to other causes. There were 82 men and 69 women, with a mean age of 42 years. Data on 348 adult patients with tuberculous spondylitis treated in 1994-1999 are analyzed. The radiation manifestations of spondylitis first occurring in maturity, which amount to 82.3% in the clinical setting were studied in 112 patients. This chapter describes core sets that can be used in the assessment of ankylosing spondylitis and other spondyloarthritides. Various core sets are described for the evaluation of disease-controlling antirheumatic therapy, symptom-modifying antirheumatic drugs and physical therapy, or for use in clinical record keeping. These core sets describe domains and also give advice on specific instruments. The value of spinal mobility and acute-phase reactants in the assessment of ankylosing spondylitis in AS are described in more detail. The available radiological scoring methods are discussed.

Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a systemic inflammatory rheumatic disease involving spinal and sacroiliac joints. This condition is responsible for back pain, stiffness and discomfort. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine if infection-related disc protrusion formed a component of the perispinous/epidural mass in patients with intervertebral disc infection.
METHOD: A retrospective review was undertaken of 16 consecutive patients with intervertebral disc space infection who were referred for gadolinium-enhanced MRI. Possible correlation was sought between disc infection and the presence of associated posterior disc protrusion as determined by MRI.

A four-year-old boy had been complaining for one year of backache when sitting or bending. Radiological changes in the lumbar spine were at first interpreted as due to an old vertebral fracture.
