OBJECTIVE: Racket and paddle sports are popular worldwide. Although there are several epidemiologic studies on tennis, there are limited epidemiologic studies on injuries in badminton, squash, racquetball, table tennis, pickleball and other racket and paddle sports. We aimed to analyze acute racket and paddle sports injuries that presented to emergency departments.
DESIGN: Descriptive epidemiologic study; level of evidence 3.
SETTING: United States emergency departments (USEDs).
METHODS: Data from National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS) were queried to characterize racket and

BACKGROUND: Soft tissue musculoskeletal injuries make up a high proportion of all work-related injuries in construction. Data from Workers' Compensation claims indicate that strains and sprains are the leading compensable injury for construction workers. This study describes the consequences of soft tissue musculoskeletal injuries for construction workers, and assesses the persistence of symptoms after an injury and the impact of that injury on return to work.
METHODS: Through an Emergency Department surveillance system [Hunting et al., 1994a], we recorded 176 construction worker visits, from

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to provide beneficial information, from a clinical perspective, on how healthcare providers and sports educators can navigate treatment and safety for TAF athletes. This was done by identifying trends seen in lower-extremity TAF injuries and providing potential treatments to counter specific injuries, closing gaps in current literature.
METHODS: The National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS) database was queried during a ten-year time span (2014-2023) to analyze lower-extremity track and field-related musculoskeletal injuries.
RESULTS: There were 128,76

INTRODUCTION: A sprain describes an excessive amount of force or strain on a ligament, which may or may not lead to its rupture. Orthoses are among the most common modalities prescribed as a conservative treatment for ankle instability and sprain.
OBJECTIVE: We aimed to analyse the effect of neoprene orthosis on the balance and functionality of healthy individuals and volunteers with lateral ankle sprains METHODS: We evaluated 12 healthy volunteers (control group) and 12 volunteers diagnosed with a sprain and/or instability (patient group). A total of 14 men and 10 women participated in the s

The majority of injuries during a football game are contusions, sprains and/or strains in the thigh, knee and ankle. Hip dislocations account for 2-5% of total hip dislocations, and they can be posterior or anterior. Major complications of traumatic hip dislocation include avascular necrosis of femoral head, secondary osteoarthritis, sciatic nerve injury and heterotopic ossification. On the occasion of a case of a 33-year-old football player, who suffered a posterior hip dislocation, associated with a posterior wall fracture of the acetabulum, while playing football, we review the literature a

The number of casualties was determined for 513 incidents involving U.S. Navy warships sunk or damaged during World War II. Ship type and weapon were significant factors in determining the numbers of wounded and killed. Multiple weapon attacks and kamikazes yielded more wounded in action than other weapon types. Multiple weapons and torpedos resulted in a higher incidence of killed in action than other weapons. Penetrating wounds and burns were the most prominent injury types. Kamikaze attacks yielded significantly more burns than incidents involving bombs, gunfire, torpedos, mines, and multip

There are a significant number of hand and upper extremity injuries treated in US emergency departments (EDs) each year. Many of these involve the thumb and wrist. These injuries encompass the range from fractures, strains, and sprains to more specific injuries such as gamekeeper thumb and de Quervain tenosynovitis. These injuries often require diagnosis, splinting, and referral to a hand or orthopedic surgeon. The splint described in this article is presently being used for patients with de Quervain tenosynovitis, but it may have more widespread application in emergency medicine. It is a safe

In brief A large survey of martial arts athletes was conducted, and 24, 112 injuries were identified. The areas most commonly injured were the thighs, legs, and digits. Contusions, sprains, and strains were the most common types of injuries. Most injuries occurred in less experienced people, and the number of injuries decreased as expertise and training increased. Only 47 serious injuries were recorded, a rate of 1 in 500 injuries. Most serious injuries, especially head injuries, occurred while sparring and in tournaments. Less than half the injuries that occur during tournaments are brought t

The incidence and complications of sport injuries in athletics, basketball, gymnastics, hockey, netball, cricket, tennis and soccer were analysed from questionnaire responses of 239 sport participants in Pretoria. Lower limb injuries were most common (73%). Torn tendomuscular organs represented 29,3% of the total number of injuries; sprains, strains and dislocations 35,9%; and fractures 20,5%. Medical treatment was sought by 62,8% of the patients. A total of 60,7% of the subjects was advised to suspend further participation in sport, but 30,6% failed to do so and more than half of these again

Low back pain is a large and increasing cause of workers compensation claims in all industrialized nations. In the United States, 23% of all compensation claims involved back pain. Almost 90% of these were self limiting sprains and strains. It has been estimated that the remaining 10% account for approximately 75% of lost work days, medical costs and permanent disability payments. It is the goal of the spine surgeon to provide the patient with relief from his symptoms and return him or her to the work place. Advances in lumbar skeletal fixation have increased the fusion rate, decreased hospita…

Because of the popularity of sports participation, sports physical therapists must recognize in the athlete the many clinical conditions that occur about the elbow. The purpose of this paper is to present the most common elbow problems that an athlete may encounter and to provide information to facilitate recognition of elbow pathology. This information is essential before initiating treatment. An attempt is made to include sprains, strains, neuropathies, dislocations, fractures, contusions, vascular insults, and skin problems in the distal humerus, elbow, and proximal forearm of both the imma

In brief: A medical team kept records for four years on all injuries that occurred during an annual state championship rodeo. Fifty-five (19.7%) of the 278 competitors and rodeo clowns who participated sustained a total of 61 injuries. Bull riding was the most dangerous event, accounting for 20 injuries to 18 competitors; saddle bronc riding and bareback riding followed with 13 injuries each. Barrel racing was the safest, with no injuries. The most common injuries were contusions, sprains, and strains, and the elbow was injured more often than any other part of the body. Protective equipment a

Ankle sprains are the most frequent sport related injuries with involvement of the lateral collateral ligament complex occurring in 85% of cases. Isolated anterior talofibular ligament injury is by far the commonest followed by combined anterior talofibular and calcaneofibular ligament strain. The posterior talofibular ligament is the strongest component of the lateral collateral ligament complex and is injured in severe ankle injury along with the other lateral collateral ligaments. While isolated calcaneofibular ligament strain has been reported, calcaneofibular ligament and posterior talofi

To show the causal relationship between normal walking after various lateral ankle ligament (LAL) injuries caused by acute inversion ankle sprains and alterations in ankle joint contact characteristics, finite element simulations of normal walking were carried out using an intact ankle joint model and LAL injury models. A walking experiment using a volunteer with a normal ankle joint was performed to obtain the boundary conditions for the simulations and to support the appropriateness of the simulation results. Contact pressure and strain on the talus articular cartilage and anteroposterior an

Injuries of the wrist, a complex joint, are common in recreational sports. Often, the clinical diagnosis made is the vague "wrist strain or sprain" unless a fracture is seen on x-ray. A thorough assessment, however (as described in part 1), may reveal any of various injuries and syndromes, including scaphoid fractures, scapholunate dissociation, ganglion cysts, or ligamentous or tendon injuries. Treatment ranges from immobilization to corticosteroid injections to surgical repair of a fracture or underlying cause.
