Dose-finding study of fluoxetine and venlafaxine for the treatment of self-injurious and stereotypic behavior in rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta).

The short-term effects on rates and durations of self-injurious behavior and self-directed stereotypies associated with various doses of fluoxetine (FLX) and venlafaxine (VEN) were examined in rhesus macaques. Adult male macaques (Macaca mulatta; n = 17; age, 7 to 15 y) with at least 1 episode of severe SIB within the past 5 y were randomized to treatment with FLX (n = 6), VEN (n = 6), or placebo (PLC, n = 5), administered by voluntary consumption of medication provided in fruit-flavored tablets. After 4-wk baseline and 4-wk placebo lead-in phases, doses were increased monthly for 4 mo (FLX: 0

Induction of Fos proteins in regions of the nucleus accumbens and ventrolateral striatum correlates with catalepsy and stereotypic behaviours induced by morphine.

A history of intermittent exposures to drugs of abuse can cause long-term changes in acute behavioural responses to a subsequent drug exposure. In drug-naive rats, morphine can elicit intermittent cataleptic postures followed by sustained increases in locomotor activity. Chronic intermittent morphine treatment can reduce catalepsy and increase locomotor behaviour and stereotypy induced by morphine, even after prolonged periods of abstinence. The nucleus accumbens and limbic basal ganglia circuitry are implicated in the expression of various morphine-induced motor behaviours and catalepsy. We e

Studies of the interaction between behavioral stereotypes and the effects of activation of presynaptic dopamine receptors during extinction and amnesia in mice.

The involvement of presynaptic dopamine receptors in the retention of a conditioned passive avoidance reflex through extinction and amnesia was studied in C57BL/6J mice selected in a 20-day aggressive conflict test for aggressive and submissive behavioral stereotypes. These experiments showed that in aggressive mice, activation of presynaptic receptors with the agonist (+)3-(3-hydroxyphenyl)-N-n-propylpiperidine [(+)3PPP] at a dose of 2 mg/kg degraded learning, significantly decreased the retention time of the acquired conditioned habit in extinction, and increased the effect of an amnesia-ind

Factors influencing the development of stereotypic and redirected behaviours in young horses: findings of a four year prospective epidemiological study.

Stereotypies are invariant and repetitive behaviour patterns that seemingly have no function, which tend to develop in captive animals faced with insoluble problems and may be indicative of reduced welfare. A 4 year prospective study of the factors influencing the development of stereotypic and redirected behaviours (abnormal behaviour) in a population of 225 young Thoroughbred and part-Thoroughbred horses was conducted between 1995 and 1999. Abnormal behaviour affected 34.7% of the population. Multivariable analysis showed that foals of low- or middle-ranking mares were less likely to develop

The Behavior Problems Inventory: an instrument for the assessment of self-injury, stereotyped behavior, and aggression/destruction in individuals with developmental disabilities.

The Behavior Problems Inventory (BPI-01) is a 52-item respondent-based behavior rating instrument for self-injurious, stereotypic, and aggressive/destructive behavior in mental retardation and other developmental disabilities. Items are rated on a frequency scale and a severity scale. The BPI-01 was administered by interviewing direct care staff of 432 randomly selected residents from a developmental center between the ages of 14 to 91 years. For 73% of those selected, at least one problem was endorsed on the BPI-01. A total of 43% showed self-injury, 54% stereotyped behavior, and 38% aggressi

Negative stereotypes that associate Latines in general with undocumented Latine immigrants increase U.S.-born Latines' anger toward the group.

OBJECTIVE: More than two thirds of the 68 million Latines in the United States are U.S. born (Piña & Martinez, 2025). However, negative stereotypes of undocumented Latine immigrants have become associated with the broader Latine population (Chavez, 2013). In the present studies, we examined whether the negative association with undocumented Latine immigrants causes U.S.-born Latines to express negative emotions toward the group, emotions associated with distancing themselves from undocumented immigrants and supporting punitive immigration policies that would harm them. METHODS: We conducted t

The development of in-group-favoring math stereotypes among adolescents across gender and race/ethnicity: Teacher influence and motivational consequences.

The developmental processes underlying in-group-favoring math stereotypes (i.e., beliefs that favor one's own gender over another gender in math ability) and their associated motivational benefits in adolescence remain understudied. Guided by developmental intergroup theory and situated expectancy-value theory, the present study examined (a) the reciprocal relations between in-group-favoring math stereotypes and perceived math teacher support; (b) their associations with math motivational outcomes (i.e., math expectancies, math identity, and math grade point average); and (c) gender difference

Female C57BL/6J mice perform distinctive urination behaviour accompanied by ultrasonic vocalisation sequences with a stereotyped temporal organisation.

Ultrasonic vocalisations (USVs) are widely studied in mice as a marker of social communication. Typically, USVs are recorded during brief social encounters in unfamiliar test cages. In the present study, we explored how freely interacting pairs of C57BL/6 J adult female mice spontaneously use USVs during long-term monitoring. We discovered that these mice display a previously undescribed behaviour: they emit specific USV sequences while depositing a large volume of urine in a corner of the cage. The most striking feature of USVs accompanying this vocalised urination behaviour was the stereotyp

Pretreatment with LY2090314, a potent glycogen synthase kinase-3 inhibitor, suppresses methamphetamine-induced stereotyped behavior but not hyperlocomotion in mice.

Neuronal glycogen synthase kinase-3s (GSK-3α and the more abundant GSK-3β) are serine/threonine kinases that have been postulated to play roles in neuronal adaptations, including those that come from exposures to substances of abuse; however, there is only modest information about ways in which GSK-3 alters the effects of the widely abused psychostimulant, methamphetamine (METH). To evaluate the effects of GSK-3 inhibition on METH-induced symptoms, mice were treated with LY2090314, a potent and selective GSK-3 inhibitor, followed by METH. Horizontal locomotion, vertical rearing, and stereotype

Same view, different lens: How intersectional identities reduce Americans' stereotypes of threat regarding Arab and Black men.

Because Black and Arab men may be stereotyped as hostile in different ways (i.e., physical vs. ideological), this study assessed whether an old age identity versus gay identity would reduce stereotypes related to hostility for Black and Arab men differently. We assessed whether the addition of an old age identity reduces hostile stereotype content more for Black men than for Arab men. In line with our hypothesis, an old age identity resulted in participants reporting fewer hostile stereotypes for Black men, but not for Arab men. We also assessed whether a gay identity reduces hostile stereotyp

Distinctive Signaling Profiles With Distinct Biological and Clinical Implications in Aggressive CLL Subsets With Stereotyped B-Cell Receptor Immunoglobulin.

The ontogeny and evolution of chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) are critically dependent on interactions between leukemic cells and their microenvironment, including antigens, the latter recognized through the clonotypic B-cell receptor immunoglobulin (BcR IG). Antigen selection is key to the pathogenesis of CLL, as evidenced by the remarkable skewing of the BcR IG gene repertoire, culminating in BcR IG stereotypy, referring to the existence of subsets of patients with (quasi)identical BcR IG. Notably, certain of these subsets have been found to display distinct, subset-biased biological back

The Emergence of a Stereotypic Movement During Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy in a Patient with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder: A Case Report.

No previous research has investigated the emergence of stereotypic movements in patients during psychotherapeutic sessions, nor have such movements been mentioned in the numerous articles on Habib Davanloo's technique of intensive short-term dynamic psychotherapy. In this article, we present two clinical vignettes from early intensive short-term dynamic psychotherapy sessions, using Davanloo's technique, with a patient who was observed to have an emerging stereotypic movement. These vignettes, extracted from the videotaped sessions using audiovisual technology, concern a young woman who is kno

Does Stereotype Threat Deteriorate Academic Performance of High School Students With Learning Disabilities? The Buffering Role of Psychological Disengagement.

The academic underperformance of high school students with learning disabilities may reduce their access to higher education and decrease their employment opportunities. Based on stereotype threat hypothesis, the present study examined the role of stereotype threat in academic performance among adolescents with learning disabilities and the moderating role of psychological disengagement in this relation. In Study 1, 120 students with learning disabilities finished the measures of stereotype threat vulnerability and psychological disengagement, and their academic score at two time points were c

Stereotypical patterns of epileptiform calcium signal in hippocampal CA1, CA3, dentate gyrus and entorhinal cortex in freely moving mice.

Epilepsy is a multi-etiological brain dysfunction syndrome. Hippocampal neuronal damage induced by seizures may be one of the causes leading to cognitive impairment, but the underlying mechanism remains to be further elucidated. The kainic acid (KA) model of temporal lobe epilepsy is widely used in understanding of the epileptogenesis. Fiber photometry is a signal detection technology suitable for recording calcium activity of neurons in the deep brain of freely moving animal. Here, we used the optical fiber-based method to monitor the real-time neuronal population activities of freely moving

Embryonic intraventricular exposure to autism-specific maternal autoantibodies produces alterations in autistic-like stereotypical behaviors in offspring mice.

Multiple studies have implicated a role of maternal autoantibodies reactive against fetal brain proteins specific to autism in the etiology of autism spectrum disorders (ASD). In the current study, we examined the impact of brain-reactive maternal autoantibodies of mothers of children with autism (MAU) on offspring behavior in mice compared to offspring exposed to non-reactive IgG of mothers of typically developing children (MTD). Embryonic offspring were exposed to a single intraventricular injection of MAU or MTD IgG on embryonic day 14. Offspring were allowed to mature to adulthood and were

Interprofessional simulation-based education program: a promising approach for changing stereotypes and improving attitudes toward nurse-physician collaboration.

An effective working relationship between physicians and nurses is enhanced by fostering positive perceptions and collaborative attitudes between the two professions. This brief paper examines the effect of an interprofessional simulation-based communication education program in enhancing medical and nursing students' perceptions of each other's profession and their attitudes toward nurse-physician collaboration. Pretest-Posttest design was conducted on 96 medical and nursing students who demonstrated the existence of professional stereotypes in the baseline data. This study showed that by pro

Risk factors for stereotypic behavior and self-biting in rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta): animal's history, current environment, and personality.

Captive rhesus macaques sometimes exhibit undesirable abnormal behaviors, such as motor stereotypic behavior (MSB) and self-abuse. Many risk factors for these behaviors have been identified but the list is far from comprehensive, and large individual differences in rate of behavior expression remain. The goal of the current study was to determine which experiences predict expression of MSB and self-biting, and if individual differences in personality can account for additional variation in MSB expression. A risk factor analysis was performed utilizing data from over 4,000 rhesus monkeys at the
