OBJECTIVE: To study the preventative effects of massage on gastric volvulus (GV) in infants with gastroesophageal reflux (GER)-induced pneumonia.
METHODS: One-hundred and eighty GV with GER-induced pneumonia inpatients were divided randomly into four groups: basic treatment 1 (n = 60), basic treatment 2 (n = 30), massage treatment 1 (n = 60) and massage treatment 2 (n = 30). Clinical examinations selected between groups 1 and 2 were different. Radiography of the upper gastrointestinal tract using iodine-containing contrast was assessed in group 1 before and after treatment, whereas 24-h pH mo

This review article summarizes what is known as well as what is undetermined concerning the inherited and environmental pathogenesis of gastric dilatation volvulus in dogs. The disorder primarily affects large and giant, deep-chested breeds. A concise description of a typical dog affected with gastric dilatation volvulus is presented.

Intrathoracic gastric volvulus associated with neonatal paraesophageal hernia is very rare in the newborn period. We report a case of a 3-week-old term infant who presented to the hospital with a history of non-bilious vomiting. Workup for hypertrophic pyloric stenosis eventually revealed the presence of a congenital hiatal hernia and intrathoracic gastric volvulus requiring urgent surgical management. The infant underwent successful laparoscopic repair. We discuss the diagnosis and management of this extremely rare surgical cause of neonatal nonbilious emesis.

OBJECTIVE: To determine short- and long-term complications in clinically normal dogs after endoscopically assisted gastropexy.
DESIGN: Prospective case series.
ANIMALS: 24 dogs.
PROCEDURES: Endoscopically assisted gastropexy was performed on each dog. Dogs were evaluated laparoscopically at 1 or 6 months after surgery to assess integrity of the gastropexy. Long-term outcome was determined via telephone conversations conducted with owners > or = 1 year after surgery.
RESULTS: Mean +/- SD gastropexy length was 4.5 +/- 0.9 cm, and mean duration of surgery was 22 +/- 5 minutes. One dog had a p

Gastric volvulus is a rare condition which usually presents with intermittent abdominal pain. It is typically associated with a paraoesophageal hiatus hernia and may present with acute strangulation or perforation. The mortality associated with an acutely obstructed volvulus may be up to 50%. Correspondingly, this condition is regarded as a surgical emergency. We present the history of a patient with an acute gastric volvulus and unexplained hypotension.

Bochdalek's hernia is the most common congenital diaphragmatic hernia in newborns, but it is an uncommon clinical feature in adults. In most cases, there are no symptoms or only minor gastrointestinal problems. Rarely, it may manifest as an acute abdomen due to viscus strangulation, requiring emergency surgery. We report the case of a 52-year-old man with herniation of the colon and a volvulated stomach through a Bochdalek's hernia. The patient was operated on via a laparoscopic approach and had an uneventful recovery. We recommend the laparoscopic approach as an alternative to open surgery in

We report a case of an important and uncommon cause of vomiting in an elderly female patient who had no previous apparent gastrointestinal problems. A diaphragmatic hernia with gastric volvulus, which presented non-specifically but was an important diagnosis to make.

Hemostatic profiles (prothrombin time, activated partial thromboplastin time, fibrinogen concentration, fibrin degradation product concentration, platelet count, and antithrombin III activity) were acquired prospectively in 20 dogs with a diagnosis of gastric dilatation-volvulus. Eighteen dogs had abnormal results of one or more hemostatic test, including eight dogs that had hemostatic profiles consistent with a diagnosis of disseminated intravascular coagulation. During surgery, or at necropsy, the dogs' stomachs were evaluated for gross abnormalities, and lesions were graded subjectively as

Gastric volvulus can complicate paraesophageal hiatal hernia. Acquired gastric torsion results in acute or chronic gastrointestinal symptoms. Biliary complications are possible but exceptional. A case of asymptomatic diaphragmatic hiatal hernia with intrathoracic gastric volvulus presenting as a cholestatic syndrome secondary to stretching and tension of the common bile duct in the diaphragmatic hiatus is reported. This observation emphasizes the possibility of direct relationship between two otherwise frequent diagnostics: hiatal hernia and biliary obstruction. Only one similar case has been

Canine gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV) is a naturally acquired condition of large-breed dogs primarily and is associated with high mortality. The clinical course suggests that reperfusion injury may be important in the pathogenesis of GDV. To evaluate the role of xanthine oxidase and iron-dependent lipid peroxidation (which are purported mechanisms of reperfusion injury) in the pathogenesis of GDV-related mortality, we created experimental GDV in 21 dogs. These dogs were then treated with either allopurinol (a xanthine oxidase inhibitor), U74006F (an experimental lipid peroxidation inhibitor

An unusual complication of gastric dilatation/volvulus developed in a 10-year-old spayed Great Dane. An aortic thromboembolus lodged in the iliac artery bifurcation 4 days after admission and tube gastropexy to correct the condition. The dog was euthanatized after 48 hours of supportive care failed to elicit any improvement. Thrombus formation appeared to originate in the left ventricle; however, a primary cause could not be determined.
