Rectus Muscle Resection for Vertical Strabismus in Thyroid Eye Disease.

PURPOSE: Rectus muscle resection in thyroid eye disease (TED) is generally avoided due to the risk of worsening restriction or reactivating inflammation. However, for some patients with large-angle strabismus or diplopia in primary gaze despite maximum recession surgery, rectus muscle resection may be beneficial. We report our surgical experience with rectus muscle resection in the management of vertical strabismus associated with TED. METHODS: Retrospective review of eight patients with TED and vertical diplopia who underwent vertical rectus muscle resection by a single surgeon (IBM) at a te…

Automatic diagnosis of strabismus in digital videos through cover test.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Medical image processing can contribute to the detection and diagnosis of human body anomalies, and it represents an important tool to assist in minimizing the degree of uncertainty of any diagnosis, while providing specialists with an additional source of diagnostic information. Strabismus is an anomaly that affects approximately 4% of the population. Strabismus modifies vision such that the eyes do not properly align, influencing binocular vision and depth perception. Additionally, it results in aesthetic problems, which can be reversed at any age. However, the use …

Functional burden of strabismus: decreased binocular summation and binocular inhibition.

IMPORTANCE: Binocular summation (BiS) is defined as the superiority of visual function for binocular over monocular viewing. Binocular summation decreases with age and large interocular differences in visual acuity. To our knowledge, BiS has not heretofore been well studied as a functional measure of binocularity in strabismus. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of strabismus on BiS using a battery of psychophysical tasks that are clinically relevant and easy to use and to determine whether strabismus is associated with binocular inhibition in extreme cases. DESIGN: Case-control study. SETTI…

Strabismus secondary to frontal sinus mucocele associated with nasal polyposis.

Paranasal mucoceles are regarded as slow-growing and benign lesions. They are usually recognized by otorhinolaryngologists, but a clinically relevant mucocele with orbital complications may present to an ophthalmologist. We report a 15-year-old's case with unilateral reduced ocular motility due to bilateral frontal mucocele associated with grade II nasal polyposis.

Brief daily periods of unrestricted vision preserve stereopsis in strabismus.

PURPOSE: This study examines whether brief periods of binocular vision could preserve stereopsis in monkeys reared with optical strabismus. METHODS: Starting at 4 weeks of age, six infant monkeys were reared with a total of 30 prism diopters base-in split between the eyes. Two of the six monkeys wore prisms continuously, one for 4 weeks and one for 6 weeks. Four of the six monkeys wore prisms but had 2 hours of binocular vision daily, one for 4, one for 6, and two for 16 weeks. Five normally reared monkeys provided control data. Behavioral methods were used to measure spatial contrast sensiti…

[Thomsen myotonia congenita and strabismus: recording saccades in myotonic diseases].

INTRODUCTION: Thomsen myotonia is an autosomal dominant, but not dystrophic myotonia. We report a family case associating congenital Thomsen's myotonia, strabismus, and ocular myopathy. We successively studied seven isolated patients presenting a myotonic disease and two controls and recorded the ocular saccades of these patients (amplitude, velocity) as a comparison for our family case. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Four women from the same family presented Thomsen myotonia associated with strabismus. In addition to the clinical manifestations, the electro-oculographic analysis showed saccade altera…
