Exposure to interpersonal violence and risk of post-traumatic stress disorder among women with borderline personality disorder.

BACKGROUND: This study aims to determine the validity of the Karolinska Interpersonal Violence Scale (KIVS), as a screening tool for PTSD, among women with borderline personality disorder (BPD) and severe suicidal behavior. METHOD: 106 women with BPD and at least two suicide attempts were assessed with the KIVS for exposure to interpersonal violence as a child and as an adult. The screening ability of the KIVS for the diagnosis of PTSD was analyzed using receiver operating characteristic curve analysis. RESULTS: PTSD diagnosis was valid for 61 (58%) women with BPD. The KIVS - exposure of lif

Is it Trauma- or Fantasy-based? Comparing dissociative identity disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, simulators, and controls.

OBJECTIVE: The Trauma Model of dissociative identity disorder (DID) posits that DID is etiologically related to chronic neglect and physical and/or sexual abuse in childhood. In contrast, the Fantasy Model posits that DID can be simulated and is mediated by high suggestibility, fantasy proneness, and sociocultural influences. To date, these two models have not been jointly tested in individuals with DID in an empirical manner. METHOD: This study included matched groups [patients (n = 33) and controls (n = 32)] that were compared on psychological Trauma and Fantasy measures: diagnosed genuine

Phase II trial on the effects of Silexan in patients with neurasthenia, post-traumatic stress disorder or somatization disorder.

Silexan, a novel lavender oil preparation for oral use, has been authorized in Germany for the treatment of states of restlessness during anxious mood. An open-label, exploratory trial was performed to assess the potential of the medicinal product in the treatment of restlessness caused by anxiety as related to several disorders. Outcome measures included the Symptom Checklist-90-Revised (SCL-90-R), von Zerssen's Depression Scale (D-S), the 36-item Short Form Health Survey Questionnaire (SF-36), and a sleep diary. 50 male and female patients with neurasthenia (ICD-10 F48.0), post-traumatic str

Identification of potential biomarkers and therapeutic targets related to post-traumatic stress disorder due to traumatic brain injury.

BACKGROUND: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), a disease state that has an unclear pathogenesis, imposes a substantial burden on individuals and society. Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is one of the most significant triggers of PTSD. Identifying biomarkers associated with TBI-related PTSD will help researchers to uncover the underlying mechanism that drives disease development. Furthermore, it remains to be confirmed whether different types of traumas share a common mechanism of action. METHODS: For this study, we screened the eligible data sets from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) databa

Investigating traumatic memory integration in people with and without post-traumatic stress disorder using the event-cueing paradigm.

Poor integration and landmark views make opposing claims regarding the relationship between post-traumatic stress symptoms and trauma memory integration. This study tested these approaches using an event cluster paradigm. In total, 126 participants (Nptsd = 61; Nnon-ptsd = 65) remembered memories from the same story as trauma, positive and neutral memories and reported whether each memory was directly retrieved or generated. Moreover, the retrieval time (RT) was recorded. Finally, the participants completed the Centrality of Event Scale (CES) and Post-traumatic Stress Disorder Symptom Scale-Se

The Co-Occurrence of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Depression in Individuals with and without Traumatic Brain Injury: A Comprehensive Investigation.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a prevalent psychiatric disorder that often occurs following war trauma. Despite its high prevalence, there is still a lack of comprehensive understanding regarding the mechanisms underlying its progression and treatment resistance. Recent research has shed light on the biological basis of PTSD, with neuroimaging studies revealing altered brain connectivity patterns in affected individuals. In war contexts, traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a common occurrence and is associated with a high prevalence of PTSD. This study aimed to compare the severity of PT

Distinguishing the Relative Impact of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Traumatic Brain Injury on iPad-Measured Cognitive Function.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are highly prevalent, and frequently comorbid, among active and retired military service members. Both TBI and PTSD may contribute to impaired cognitive function, but it remains insufficiently clear what the relative impact of each is on overall cognition and whether multiple TBIs may further impair cognitive function. To understand the relative impact of TBI and symptoms of PTSD on cognitive function we examined data from 326 active or retired military service members, or dependents, either with or without a history of TBI

Lasting consequences of traumatic events on behavioral and skeletal parameters in a mouse model for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

BACKGROUND: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is an anxiety disorder that not only affects mental health, but may also affect bone health. However, there have been no studies to examine the direct relationship between PTSD and bone. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We employed electric shocks in mice to simulate traumatic events that cause PTSD. We also injected the anxiogenic drug FG-7142 prior to electric shocks. Electric shocks created lasting conditioned fear memory in all mice. In young mice, electric shocks elicited not only behavioral response but also skeletal response, and injecti

Early adverse life events and post-traumatic stress disorder in patients with constipation and suspected disordered defecation.

BACKGROUND: Early adverse life events (EALs) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are associated with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Disordered defecation (DD) presents with symptoms of IBS or functional constipation (FC) and is associated with psychological distress. However, the role of trauma and stress in chronic constipation is poorly defined. We aimed to examine EALS, PTSD, and psychological symptoms in patients with constipation and suspected DD. METHODS: We conducted a survey study among adults with constipation who completed anorectal manometry (ARM) and balloon expulsion testi

Post-traumatic stress disorder may set the neurobiological stage for eating disorders: A focus on glutamatergic dysfunction.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a trauma and stress-related disorder which has been shown to be highly comorbid with, and commonly a precedent of, the eating disorders anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating disorder. The objective of this review is to discuss a potential overlapping neurobiological mechanism for this comorbidity. Alterations in glutamatergic neurotransmission have been observed in all four of the aforementioned disorders. Excessive excitation via glutamate contributes to excitotoxicity, and over-activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, both

Depression, Anxiety, and Post-traumatic Stress Disorder Following a Hypertensive Disorder of Pregnancy: A Narrative Literature Review.

Introduction: Pregnancy and childbirth can be a source of anxiety and worry for women. This is probably more so for women with a complicated pregnancy. Anxiety and worry may contribute to, or exacerbate, mental health disorders including depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Mental health is an integral part of health and well-being and poor mental health can be detrimental to the woman's welfare and her infant's behavior and cognitive development. It may be undetected, potentially leading to a burden on the woman, her family, the health system, and society. Women with complica

A Cross-Sectional Analysis of Traumatic Experiences, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Symptoms and Chronic Pain in Northern Ireland.

BACKGROUND: Chronic pain and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are frequently comorbid and are associated with more significant pain-related disruption than chronic pain alone. It is not clear if these disruptions are due to traumatic experience or specific symptoms related to PTSD. METHODS: This issue was evaluated in a large sample (N = 1367) of individuals with chronic pain presenting for treatment at an interdisciplinary pain rehabilitation service. As a secondary objective, the comorbidity of chronic pain and PTSD in Northern Ireland (NI) was also examined given high regional prevale

Association of Anger and Aggression With Post-traumatic Stress Disorder and Mild Traumatic Brain Injury in U.S. Service Members.

INTRODUCTION: Anger and aggression are strongly associated with PTSD. Less well established is their association with mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) and how specific types of anger-based aggressive behaviors manifest in the context of PTSD, mTBI, and comorbid mTBI/PTSD. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted secondary analyses of data from the 2018 DoD Health Related Behaviors Survey. Respondents included 17,065 active component service members (SMs) who screened positive for mTBI sustained within the previous 12 months, PTSD, comorbid mTBI/PTSD, or neither (Control group). We examined the p

Poor sleep and decreased cortical thickness in veterans with mild traumatic brain injury and post-traumatic stress disorder.

BACKGROUND: Poor sleep quality has been associated with changes in brain volume among veterans, particularly those who have experienced mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This study sought to investigate (1) whether poor sleep quality is associated with decreased cortical thickness in Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans, and (2) whether these associations differ topographically depending on the presence or absence of mTBI and PTSD. METHODS: A sample of 440 post-9/11 era U.S. veterans enrolled in the Translational Research Center for Traumatic Brain Inj
