Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Trajectories the Year after COVID-19 Hospitalization.

Background: Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) hospitalization has been related to Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Available information is limited by insufficient follow-up and lack of longitudinal studies. Baseline factors (e.g., sex; obesity) have been related to PTSD, but post-hospitalization factors have not been studied. Objective: This study aimed to analyse prevalence, baseline, post-discharge factors and possible clinical courses of PTSD after hospitalization for COVID-19. Method: 109 patients (94.7% of the original sample) completed a programme of three follow-up telephone assessm

Uncertainty and perinatal post-traumatic stress disorder in the neonatal intensive care unit.

Parents of infants in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) are at increased risk of developing perinatal post-traumatic stress disorder (PPTSD), a mental health condition known to interfere with healthy parental and infant attachment. Feelings of uncertainty about illness have been theorized as an antecedent to post-traumatic stress, however the relationship has not been explored in parents of infants requiring care in the NICU. The purpose of this prospective study was to explore parental uncertainty during and after NICU discharge and the relationship between uncertainty and PPTSD. The sa

The Relationship Between Dissociation and Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder: A Scoping Review.

Complex post-traumatic stress disorder (CPTSD) has recently been recognized as an official psychiatric diagnosis in ICD-11, after years of research and advocacy in the field. It has been suggested that dissociative symptoms are a major feature of CPTSD. This scoping review aimed to summarize the existing knowledge base on the relationship between dissociation and CPTSD, and to identify relevant research gaps. We searched the two largest and most widely used academic databases (i.e., the Web of Science and Scopus databases) and the ProQuest database and identified original studies published in

The Connection of Early Life Adversity and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder: an Updated Review.

Human beings develop a highly coordinated and flexible system of social behavior and threat evaluation. In this review we focus on the unique role of early life adversity (ELA) in programming deficits in social behavior and threat processing, and provides guidance on future investigations in the areas of stress reactivity and mental health. We propose that neuroendocrine perturbations of hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and gene activity by epigenetic mechanisms may explain how early adverse circumstances may lead to post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The detailed exploration of t

Risk Factors for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder after Childbirth: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) after birth has generated a growing interest in recent years. Although some risk factors associated with PTSD have been studied, information is still scarce to date on risk factors associated with PTSD. This systematic review aims to identify risk factors associated with the diagnosis of PTSD after childbirth. METHODS: We searched on PubMed, Web of Science and SCOPUS databases, from inception to May 2022. Quality assessment of the articles was performed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Quality Assessment ("NOQAS") scale. This systematic review was p

Postoperative complications and their association with post-traumatic stress disorder in academic vascular surgeons.

OBJECTIVES: Postoperative complications are an inherent component of surgical practice. This study seeks to address their association with emotional responses of academic vascular surgeons. METHODS: An anonymous electronic survey was sent to all vascular surgery program directors in North America with a request to disseminate to their faculty. The survey captured data on demographics and practice type and used imbedded validated measures to determine emotional responses to postoperative complications and to assess coping mechanisms. Univariate analysis was performed to determine differences b

Psychological Variables Associated With Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder in Firefighters: A Systematic Review.

Firefighters are repeatedly exposed to work-related potential traumatic events and have an increased risk of developing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, the mechanisms implicated in this relationship are not clear. The aim of this study was to analyse the risk and protective factors related to the development of PTSD in firefighters. According to PRISMA, a systematic review of scientific literature was conducted in Web of Science, PsycINFO, Scopus, PubMed and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials. Quality in Prognosis Studies (QUIPS) was used as the methodological q

Residual sleepiness in veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder and obstructive sleep apnea.

PURPOSE: The causes of residual excessive sleepiness (RES) in patients with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) are multifactorial and modulated by comorbid conditions. The aim of the present study was to elucidate clinical and polysomnographic determinants of RES in continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP)-adherent OSA veterans with PTSD. METHODS: The study protocol consisted of a retrospective analysis of consecutive cases of patients with PTSD who presented to the Veterans Affairs sleep clinics with adequately treated OSA between June 1, 2017 and Octob

Neurobiochemical biomarkers and other risk factors for post-traumatic acute stress disorder.

Trauma is a leading cause of mortality and morbidity around the world and many trauma patients could suffer from a series of cognitive and mental disorders including acute stress disorder (ASD). Yet, little research has been done to investigate the influencing factors and pathogenesis of post-traumatic ASD. Therefore, this study investigated main influencing factors and neurobiochemical biomarkers of ASD in trauma patients with a purpose of early clinical identification and intervention. The patients were followed up by general questionnaire and Acute Stress Disorder scale (ASDS). Using the di

What is the association between post-traumatic stress disorder and unemployment after a disaster?

OBJECTIVES: The problem is to determine whether, after a disaster, unemployment is a possible cause of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) - the classic model, or whether PTSD is a possible cause of unemployment - the alternative model. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study was conducted on a probabilistic sample of 26 213 adults who provided responses using the Davidson Trauma Scale and lived in regions near or far from the epicenter (Cobquecura, the coast of Chile) of the earthquake and tsunami of February 27, 2010. RESULTS: Independent of the proximity to the epicenter, there is an associatio

Daily variation in sleep characteristics in individuals with and without post traumatic stress disorder.

BACKGROUND: Sleep disturbances are common in individuals with post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, little is known about how daily variation in sleep characteristics is related to PTSD. This study examined the night-to-night and weekday versus weekend variation in sleep duration, sleep quality, trouble falling asleep, and difficulty staying asleep in individuals with and without PTSD. METHODS: Participants (N = 157; 80 with PTSD, 77 without PTSD) completed daily self-reports of their nighttime sleep characteristics for 15 consecutive days. Linear mixed models were used to examine t

Comparative Analysis of Pathobiochemical Changes in Major Depression and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Comparative analysis of available literature data on the pathogenetic neuroendocrine mechanisms of depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is provided in this review to identify their common features and differences. We discuss the multidirectional modifications of the activity of cortical and subcortical structures of the brain, levels of neurotransmitters and their receptors, and functions of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenocortical axis in depression and PTSD. The analysis shows that these disorders are examples of opposite failures in the system of adaptive stress response of

Investigating pupillometry to detect emotional regulation difficulties in post-traumatic stress disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Individuals with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) have been found to exhibit emotional regulation difficulties. However, the specific neural mechanisms that underlie these difficulties remain understudied. This study aimed to use pupillometry as an index function of parasympathetic nervous system activation, to investigate the mechanisms underlying emotional regulation difficulties in individuals with PTSD. METHOD: A total of 87 trauma-exposed mothers (34 with PTSD and 53 non-PTSD controls) completed an eye tracking assessment in which pupillary dilation in response to emotiona

How Memory Switches Brain Responses of Patients with Post-traumatic Stress Disorder.

To characterize the brain responses to traumatic memories in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), we conducted task-employed functional magnetic resonance imaging and, in the process, devised a simple but innovative approach-correlation computation between task conditions. A script-driven imagery task was used to compare the responses with a script of the patients' own traumatic memories and with that of tooth brushing as a daily activity and to evaluate how eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), an established therapy for PTSD, resolved the alterations in patients. Nine patie

Association of Lipid Peroxidation Product 4-Hydroxynonenal with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Repeated activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis system, sleep disturbances, and other symptoms related to posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) elevate reactive oxygen species, increase inflammation, and accelerate cellular aging, leading to neuroprogression and cognitive decline. However, there is no information about possible involvement of 4-hydroxynonenal (4-HNE), the product of lipid peroxidation associated with stress-associated diseases, in the complex etiology of PTSD. Therefore, the aim of this study was to compare the plasma levels of 4-HNE between war veterans with PTS

Post-traumatic stress disorder, suggestibility, and dissociation related to alleged alien abductions.

OBJECTIVES: Thousands of people throughout the world are convinced that they have been abducted by aliens. We aimed to assess the emotional reaction to such an implausible event and propose some explanations alternative to severe psychopathology. METHODS: A total of 19 individuals who reported memories of having been abducted by aliens were compared to a control group of 32 participants. We employed a battery of tests measuring post-traumatic stress disorder, suggestibility, and dissociation within all participants. RESULTS: The abductee group showed higher scores in measures of post-traumat

Sleep Deprivation, a Link Between Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Alzheimer's Disease.

An estimated 5 million Americans are living with Alzheimer's disease (AD), and there is also a significant impact on caregivers, with an additional 16 million Americans providing unpaid care for individuals with AD and other dementias. These numbers are projected to increase in the coming years. While AD is still without a cure, continued research efforts have led to better understanding of pathology and potential risk factors that could be exploited to slow disease progression. A bidirectional relationship between sleep deprivation and AD has been suggested and is well supported by both human

Postpartum depression and postpartum post-traumatic stress disorder: prevalence and associated factors.

BACKGROUND: Despite the increased global interest from researchers in postpartum depression (PPD) and postpartum post-traumatic stress disorder (PP-PTSD), studies of PPD in China have shown a wide range of variability. Indeed, the prevalence and risk factors for PP-PTSD have received little attention in China. AIM: To determine the prevalence of PPD and PP-PTSD in China, and to examine the relationships between a range of sociodemographic, pregnancy-related, and newborn-related variables, and PPD and PP-PTSD. METHODS: A cross-sectional study involving 1136 women who returned to the obstetric

Post-traumatic Stress Disorder in Prisoners' Offspring: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Parental incarceration can produce serious effects on the offspring's mental health. The presence of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in prisoners' offspring is understudied and the few literature data showed heterogeneous evidence, with some studies suggesting that about 25% of prisoners' offspring have PTSD and other reporting much lower prevalence rates around 2-3%. There is no systematic review and meta-analysis about PTSD in prisoners' offspring. OBJECTIVES: The present systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to provide a first quantitative synthesis of the prevalence
