A case study of DW, an 11-yr. old monolingual, English-speaking boy who exhibits stuttering, language delay, and ADHD is presented. DW experienced only limited improvement during stuttering therapy received in public schools, according to parents and the public school clinician. The purpose of this case study was to assess whether fluency treatment which incorporated Mediated Learning, Delayed Auditory Feedback, and Speech Motor Repatterning would enhance progress. Therapy was delivered in two treatments, with each treatment being 5 wk. of intense therapy, separated by one year. Treatment 1 of…

This paper tested hypotheses arising from the literature on the treatment of stuttering in British-Asian children and adolescents, using data obtained from a postal questionnaire completed by 87 therapists. The results showed therapists treating lower numbers of Asian clients than expected, but perceiving their therapy to be less effective with their Asian clients than with their British ones. The variables affecting therapists' perceived success were not those expected. Greater experience with Asian clients did not increase perceived success, nor did Asian therapist and client sharing broadly…

This study explored how people who stutter define and experience recovery, aiming to understand what it means to "live effectively with stuttering" and to evaluate personal narratives as client-based evidence. Using narrative inquiry and thematic analysis, 30 publicly available recovery narratives from SLPs who stutter were analyzed. Narratives were drawn from ASHA convention panels (1996-2019) and examined holistically to identify shared themes and insights. Six themes captured the core dimensions of recovery: (1) the emotional and cognitive work of acceptance, (2) claiming voice through disc…

BACKGROUND: Developmental stuttering affects up to 11% of children globally, with around one-fifth developing a persistent lifelong stutter. Twin and family studies indicate a strong genetic contribution and comorbidity with other heritable traits. Despite efforts to investigate the common genetic architecture of stuttering, much of variation contributing to clinically ascertained stuttering, persistence and recovery remains uncharacterised.
METHODS: We performed a genome-wide association study (GWAS) meta-analysis of stuttering across 18 cohorts (6,096 cases, 81,629 controls) of European anc…

This article reviews a critique by Bernstein Ratner (2005) to identify progress made in applying EBP to stuttering intervention and areas in which less progress has been observed. Among indices of progress are plentiful basic science and therapy outcomes reports, broader views of effectiveness, and increased representation of people who stutter in program development and evaluation. Among concerns we discuss are: (1) continued disconnects between basic science to understand the nature of stuttering and the therapies we employ with our clients; (2) a need for better understanding of causal mech…

Developmental stuttering (DS) is a disturbance of the normal rhythm of speech that may be interpreted as very debilitating in the most affected cases. Interventions for DS are historically based on the behavioral modifications of speech patterns (e.g., through speech therapy), which are useful to regain a better speech fluency. However, a great variability in intervention outcomes is normally observed, and no definitive evidence is currently available to resolve stuttering, especially in the case of its persistence in adulthood. In the last few decades, DS has been increasingly considered as a…

BACKGROUND: Although there are treatments that can alleviate stuttering in adults for clinically significant periods, in Australia there are barriers to the accessibility and availability of best-practice treatment.
AIMS: This parallel group, non-inferiority randomized controlled trial with multiple blinded outcome assessments investigated whether telehealth delivery of the Camperdown Program provides a non-inferior alternative to face-to-face treatment for adults who stutter.

UNLABELLED: A procedure for subtyping individuals who stutter and its relationship to treatment outcome is explored. Twenty-five adult participants of the Comprehensive Stuttering Program (CSP) were classified according to: (1) stuttering severity and (2) severity of negative emotions and cognitions associated with their speech problem. Speech characteristics (percentage of stuttered syllables, distorted speech score, and the number of correctly produced syllables on a diadochokinesis task) and emotional/cognitive states (emotional reaction, speech satisfaction, and attitudes toward speaking) …

UNLABELLED: Support groups are rapidly becoming an important part of the recovery process for many people who stutter, and a growing number of speech-language pathologists (SLPs) are encouraging their clients to participate in support groups. At present, however, little is known about the individuals who join stuttering support groups and the benefits they derive from their participation. This study surveyed members of the National Stuttering Association (NSA) to learn about their experiences in support groups, as well as their experiences in speech therapy. Respondents were 71 people who atte…

Persons with physical disabilities cannot be diagnosed as having social phobia under current DSM-III-R criteria. The DSM-III-R social phobia diagnosis excludes persons where a physical disorder causes the distress and phobic avoidance. However, the authors have noted in clinical practice that social phobia and physical disabilities sometimes coexist. A review of the published literature reveals that stutterers and BET patients frequently have social phobia-like symptoms. No prevalence data on comorbid DSM-III-R-defined social phobia were found in these groups (i.e., social phobia occurring in

PURPOSE: The psychological impact of stuttering, such as anxiety in adults who stutter, is understudied in non-Western cultures. This study addresses this gap by performing a preliminary examination of anxiety in a group of Chinese adults who stutter. The aims of the study were to (a) compare state and trait anxiety between adults who stutter and adults who do not stutter, and (b) examine the cross-cultural consistency of the relationship between stuttering and anxiety.
METHOD: A total of 40 Mandarin-speaking adults who stutter and 40 age- and sex-matched Mandarin-speaking adults who do not s…

PURPOSE: This review article aimed to provide an overview of the information available to guide speech-language pathologists (SLPs) regarding treatment of co-occurring stuttering and speech sound disorder (SSD) in children aged 0-18 years.
METHOD: Systematic searches of 10 databases, gray literature sources (e.g., textbooks, ProQuest dissertations), and nontraditional sources (e.g., websites, social media) were conducted. The search was limited to sources that were (a) published in 1990 or later, (b) published in English, (c) referenced children (0-18 years old) with co-occurring stuttering a…

INTRODUCTION: Preschool-age children use mental state verbs (MSVs; e.g., think, know) to reference thoughts and other cognitive states. In play-based language, MSV use requires conversational flexibility, as speakers shift from discussion of actions happening in the here-and-now to more abstract discussion of mental states. Some evidence suggests that children who stutter (CWS) demonstrate subtle differences in shifting on experimental tasks of cognitive flexibility, differences which may extend to conversational flexibility. This study explored MSV use in conversational language between CWS a

BACKGROUND: Access to services remains the biggest barrier to helping the most vulnerable in the South African Stuttering Community. This novel stuttering therapy, harnessing an unconscious link between eye and tongue movement, may provide a new therapeutic approach, easily communicated and deliverable online.
OBJECTIVES: This study provides both objective and subjective assessments of the feasibility of this intervention. Assessment tools holistically address all components of stuttering in line with comprehensive treatment approaches: core behaviours, secondary behaviours, anticipation and …

BACKGROUND: A disability studies approach seeks to understand and address political and social issues that affect disabled individuals. Disability studies scholars employ various models of disability to address and oppose the oppression and discrimination of disabled individuals. A disability studies approach, however, has largely been absent in studies that have investigated the lived experiences of people who stutter.
AIM: To examine the understandings young adult South African men who stutter hold of whether, and in what way, stuttering may be considered to be a disability.

INTRODUCTION: Adults who stutter (AWS) are reported to have higher social anxiety compared to those who do not stutter. Previous studies have suggested that safety behaviors, which are cognitive or behavioral strategies used by people with anxiety to prevent negative consequences, are important factors in maintaining anxiety. However, the frequency and types of such behaviors might vary in different cultures. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to develop a transcultural adaptation of Safety Behaviors Questionnaire (Helgadottir et al., 2014) for Persian-speaking AWS and assess its vali

CONCLUSIONS: We concluded that emotional and behavioural problems associated with stuttering are noticeable from early childhood to adolescence. Cooperation with mental health professionals may be needed to improve the quality of speech therapy in CAWS.

PURPOSE: There is evidence that access to treatment for early stuttering is not available for all who need it. An internet version of the Lidcombe Program for early stuttering (Internet-LP) has been developed to deal with this shortfall. The LP is suitable for such development because it is delivered by parents in the child's everyday environment, with training by a speech-language pathologist. A Phase I trial of Internet-LP Part 1, comprising parent training, is reported here.
METHOD: Eight parents of pre-schoolers who stutter were recruited and six completed the trial.
RESULT: Post-trial a…

This research note explored the hypothesis that chunking differences underlie the slow finger-tap sequencing performance reported in the literature for persons who stutter (PWS) relative to fluent speakers (PNS). Early-stage chunking was defined as an immediate and spontaneous tendency to organize a long sequence into pauses, for motor planning, and chunks of fluent motor performance. A previously published study in which 12 PWS and 12 matched PNS practised a 10-item finger tapping sequence 30 times was examined. Both groups significantly decreased the duration of between-chunk intervals (BCIs
