In this study, a series of azo-fused H-bonded arylamide foldamers was synthesized. Molecules with extended backbones exhibited pronounced photoresponsive behavior in both dichloromethane and dimethyl sulfoxide. In low-polarity dichloromethane, intramolecular three-center hydrogen bonding remained stable, promoting the formation of well-defined S-shaped (E) and helical (Z) conformations. The impact of co-lyophilizing horseradish peroxidase (HRP) with numerous amino acids and other chiral excipients on the enzyme's subsequent stereoselectivity [E(S/R)] in the sulfoxidation of thioanisole in 2-propanol was systematically investigated. While many improved the stereoselectivity of (and significantly activated) HRP, the greatest effect was observed with D-proline which enhanced the E(S/R) value by over an order of magnitude from synthetically meaningless to useful.

By using an experimental model compound (Albendazole, an anthelmintic) the authors compared two methodologies for the toxicological evaluation of bovine hepatic residues. Toxicity was not demonstrated for bovine hepatic residues in a relay embryotoxicity study in the rat. On the other hand, both albendazole and its sulfoxide metabolite produce embryotoxic effects in this rat model. These different results are discussed and explained by considerations related to the no effect levels and the chemical nature of the different types of residues.
