Daily pattern of sweating and response to stress and exercise in patients with palmar hyperhidrosis.

BACKGROUND: Focal hyperhidrosis is an embarrassing condition that can have a significant negative impact on patient quality of life. It is characterized by excessive sweating affecting a variety of areas, including the palms. Little is known about the daily pattern of sweating in patients with palmar hyperhidrosis. OBJECTIVES: To compare the variation of sweating in patients with primary palmar hyperhidrosis with healthy individuals during daily activities. METHODS: Twenty patients with primary palmar hyperhidrosis and 20 healthy age- and sex-matched subjects were studied. Each participant s…

Treatment of gustatory sweating with low-dose botulinum toxin A: a case report.

UNLABELLED: Frey's syndrome, gustatory sweating in the preauricular area, is an unpleasant phenomenon occurring during meals after surgery on the parotid gland. Recently, botulinum toxin A (BTX) has been shown to reduce the symptoms, but the variation in the reported doses is large. OBJECTIVE: To quantify the effect of treatment with low-dose BTX in a case of Frey's syndrome over a period of 6 months. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A 56-year-old woman was treated with 10 U Botox given as 20 single, intracutaneous injections of 0.5 U, one for each cm(2), 3 years after resection of the parotid gland. B…

[Mucinous sweat gland carcinoma of a toe with metastasis to the maxilla. A case report].

Malignant tumors of the maxilla are rare. In addition to primary tumors metastatic disease has to be considered. Renal cell carcinomas, carcinomas of the breast, lung and adenocarcinomas are constituting the most frequent primary lesions for maxillary metastases. To the best of our knowledge, we present the first case of a mucinous sweat gland carcinoma metastasizing to the maxilla four years after primary diagnosis. Thirty-two months after resecting the hemimaxilla, there are no signs of local recurrence. Although skin tumors only rarely develop distant metastases, sweat gland carcinomas shou…

Diagnosing cystic fibrosis--asthma and failure to thrive as indications for a sweat test.

Children with asthma or failure to thrive (FTT) are frequently referred for the quantitative pilocarpine iontophoresis sweat test (QPIT) for diagnosing cystic fibrosis (CF). The aim of our study was to compare the prevalences of asthma and FTT among patients with a confirmed diagnosis of CF. Two-hundred and fifty-five children, who were referred for QPIT between 1991-1996 in order to rule out CF were studied retrospectively. All sweat samples had been obtained and analyzed according to the National Committee For Clinical Laboratory Standards. Asthma was defined as 24 episodes of wheezing, trea…

Transient elevation of sweat chloride concentration in a malnourished girl with the Mauriac syndrome.

Elevated sweat chloride concentration in a patient with Mauriac syndrome has been reported only once. The authors of that report regarded their patient's underlying malnutrition, and not Mauriac syndrome per se, as the cause of the elevated sweat chloride concentration. We describe a second example of transient elevation of sweat chloride concentration, which confirms that the malnutrition intrinsic to Mauriac syndrome, rather than the syndrome itself, was the probable cause of elevated sweat chloride values.

The mechanism of facial sweating and cutaneous vascular responses to painful stimulation of the eye.

The vascular response in the forehead and cheeks to irritating the eye with soapy water was measured in 15 normal subjects. Electrodermal activity, which reflects sweating, was also measured from both sides of the forehead. The mechanism of the response was studied in 15 patients with a unilateral lesion of the facial nerve blocking parasympathetic outflow. Pulse amplitude usually increased briefly on both sides of the forehead after the soap was placed in the eye; the response persisted for several minutes on the ipsilateral side after the soap had been washed from the eye. A facial nerve les…

Dynamic sweating response of man to infrared irradiation in various spectral regions.

In an attempt to detect differences in the thermal effect of infrared irradiation of different wave-lengths, transient sweating response to infrared irradiation in various spectral regions was examined. In Series 1, the ventral or dorsal surface of the nude subject was irradiated repetitively for a period of 4 min (2 min on, 2 min off) by each of three kinds of infrared heaters with main emissivity in 'near-infrared' (NIR; 0.7-2.8 microns), 'intermediate-infrared' (MIR; 1.5-5.8 microns), and 'far-infrared' (FIR; 2.8-25 microns) regions. The sweating response on a non-irradiated area tended to …

Effect of cerebrospinal fluid hyperosmolality on sweating in the heat-stressed patas monkey.

Dehydration increases the osmolality of body fluids and decreases the rate of sweating during thermal stress. By localizing osmotic stimuli to central nervous system tissues, this study assessed the role of central stimulation on sweating in a heat-stressed nonhuman primate. Lenperone-tranquilized patas monkeys (Erythrocebus patas n = 5), exposed to 41 +/- 2 degrees C, were monitored for calf sweat rate, rectal and mean skin temperatures, oxygen consumption, and heart rate during infusions (255-413 microliters) of hypertonic artificial cerebrospinal fluid (ACSF) into the third cerebral ventric…

Contribution of skin thermal sensitivities of large body areas to sweating response.

The thermal sensitivity of different parts of the body was investigated by heating large areas of the body surface while the mean skin temperature calculated from Hardy and DuBois ' formula (1938) was always kept constant. The right arm sweating responses recorded under a local thermal clamp were related to changes in segmental skin temperatures of the different parts of the body. The results show that: 1) the various local peripheral signals are projected into integrating structures in the central nervous system; 2) the thermal sensitivity is greater for the head-and-trunk area in comparison …

Normal sweating and tear production in congenital ichthyosiform erythroderma with deafness and keratitis.

A 24-year-old female patient with congenital ichthyosiform erythroderma, deafness and vascularizing keratitis yet also examining normal sweating and tear production when tested is reported. This unique finding indicates that a certain subgroup of patients with this generalized ectodermal disturbance may benefit from treatment with the aromatic retinoids.

Hot flashes and night sweats in relation to trouble sleeping and daytime sleepiness.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to determine whether self-reported night sweats (NS) and hot flashes (HF) were differentially associated with sleep problems, assessed by "trouble sleeping" on a symptom checklist and the Sleep Habits Questionnaire (SHQ), or with the degree of daytime fatigue, assessed by "lack of energy" on a symptom checklist and the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS). METHODS: Data were drawn from a study of midlife women aged 40-60 in Doha, Qatar (N=841). Participants were categorized as having (1) neither HF nor NS, (2) only HF, (3) only NS, or (4) both HF and NS. Bi…

The maturation of regional sweating patterns from childhood to young adulthood in females.

Children are considered heat vulnerable, with the belief that maturation of sweating occurs throughout childhood. Indeed, young children demonstrate distinct patterns of regional sweating compared to adults, but little is known about this pattern maturation throughout puberty. This study aimed to investigate the maturation of regional sweating patterns and thermal perceptions in females during exercise. Twenty-eight females aged 8-25 years, representing five Tanner stages (preadolescent to adult) were recruited. Local sweat rates (LSR), sweat output per gland and thermal perceptions were measu…

Sweating It Out: When Meconium Ileus Is Not Cystic Fibrosis-A Case Report.

Meconium ileus (MI) is the result of the accumulation of thick, dry, inspissated meconium that creates a bowel blockage, most commonly in the terminal ileum. These pockets of meconium prevent passage of stool beyond the point of obstruction, which leads to distention of the proximal bowel, bowel wall thickening, and distal microcolon. Occurring most commonly (90%) in conjunction with cystic fibrosis (CF), the occurrence of MI without CF is rare. The literature describes the incidence of MI associated with CF occurring in as many as 24.9% of those who have a pair (homozygous) of the most common

Hidradenitis Suppurativa: Absence of Hyperhidrosis but Presence of a Proinflammatory Signature in Patients' Sweat.

The role of sweat glands in hidradenitis suppurativa has been largely neglected, despite the fact that its original designation, as "hidrosadénite phlegmoneuse", implied an inflammatory malfunction of the apocrine sweat glands as the underlying pathogenic driver. The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of apocrine sweat glands with respect to the proinflammatory environment of hidradenitis suppurativa. Therefore, gravimetric assessment and multiplex cytokine assays from sweat obtained from patients with hidradenitis suppurativa along with immunofluorescence cytokine/chemokine analysis o…

Independent association between hypoxemia and night sweats in obstructive sleep apnea.

PURPOSE: To assess the relationship between hypoxemia during polysomnography (PSG) and patient-reported night sweats (NS). METHODS: This retrospective observational study included adult patients who completed a standardized sleep questionnaire and the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) before PSG. RESULTS: We included 1397 patients (41% women). The median age was 52 years, 80% had obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) defined as an apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) ≥ 5, and 35% were obese. A total of 245 patients (17.5%) reported NS. Their prevalence was higher among patients with OSA compared to controls (18.…

Revisiting the dermatomal recruitment of, and pressure-dependent influences on, human eccrine sweating.

Herein we describe two experiments in which the recruitment and pressure-induced modifications of human eccrine sweating were investigated. In one experiment, the longstanding belief that glandular recruitment follows a gradual, caudal-to-rostral (dermatomal) recruitment pattern was re-evaluated. The onset of sweating was simultaneously determined (ventilated capsules) from four spinal (dermatomal) segments (forehead, dorsal hand, lower chest and dorsal foot) during the passive heating of supine participants (N = 8). No evidence was found to support either dermatomal or simultaneous glandular …

Comparative evidence for the independent evolution of hair and sweat gland traits in primates.

Humans differ in many respects from other primates, but perhaps no derived human feature is more striking than our naked skin. Long purported to be adaptive, humans' unique external appearance is characterized by changes in both the patterning of hair follicles and eccrine sweat glands, producing decreased hair cover and increased sweat gland density. Despite the conspicuousness of these features and their potential evolutionary importance, there is a lack of clarity regarding how they evolved within the primate lineage. We thus collected and quantified the density of hair follicles and eccrin…
