Prolonged stable hypothermia during a 10-hour cold open-water marathon swim.

Marathon open-water swimming presents extreme thermophysiological challenges, particularly in cold environments. This case report describes continuous core temperature data from a solo crossing of New Zealand's Foveaux Strait, an infamously cold (13°C -14°C), turbulent open-water swim. A 52-year-old male swimmer (body mass index, 27.9 kg m-2; body fat, 18%) completed the 37 km swim in 9 h 52 min under standard marathon swimming rules (no wetsuit). Core temperature (measured via an ingestible thermometer pill) decreased rapidly after immersion, falling from 37.9°C to <35.0°C within 50 min. The …

Learning to swim with back pain: a qualitative study of swimmers with chronic low back pain.

PURPOSE: Swimming is one form of exercise advised to people with chronic low back pain (CLBP), there is limited research, however, supporting this recommendation and describing the experience and use of swimming in this population. The aim of this study was to explore the experience of people who use swimming to manage CLBP. METHODS: Semi-structure interviews were conducted with 14 swimmers who were using swimming to manage CLBP. Thematic analysis was used to analyse the interview data, and the themes were mapped onto the capability, opportunity, motivation and behaviour (COM-B) model to unde…

Evaluation of Dexamethasone and Swimming Exercise as Complementary Interventions in a Rat Sciatic Nerve Injury Model.

BACKGROUND: Peripheral nerve injuries frequently result in incomplete recovery despite advances in microsurgical repair. Both pharmacological and rehabilitative strategies have been investigated to enhance regeneration. Dexamethasone, a potent anti-inflammatory corticosteroid, and aerobic exercise, such as swimming, may promote repair through distinct but complementary mechanisms. METHODS: A standardized rat sciatic nerve crush model was used to evaluate the effects of local dexamethasone administration (2 mg/kg/day, perineural for 10 days), swimming exercise (20 min/session, three times per …

The effect of forced even pacing and an opponent on end-spurt behaviour in freestyle pool swimming.

To investigate the effect of forced even pacing through virtual pacing assistance and an opponent in a competitive setting on end-spurt behaviour in freestyle swimmers, including related physiological underpinnings. Twenty-seven competitive swimmers and triathletes were recruited. There were four 1500 m freestyle trials: (i) familiarisation time trial, (ii) self-paced time trial (STT), (iii) head-to-head competition time trial (CTT) and (iv) forced even pacing through virtual pacing assistance time trial (FET). Eventually, 12 swimmers met the criteria for the CTT and FET to be included in the

Formation and control of disinfection by-products during the trichloroisocyanuric acid disinfection in swimming pool water.

The increasing demand for trichloroisocyanuric acid (TCCA) in swimming pool disinfection highlights the need to evaluate its applicability in terms of disinfection by-product (DBP) formation. Nevertheless, there is limited understanding of DBP formation and control during TCCA disinfection, particularly concerning the effects of various management parameters. This study aimed to fill this knowledge gap by comprehensively investigating DBP formation during TCCA chlorination, with a particular focus on assessing the contribution and interaction of influencing factors using Box-Behnken Design and…

Swimming in cold water upregulates genes involved in thermogenesis and the browning of white adipose tissues.

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether there is an interacting effect of six weeks of swimming in cold water on the gene expression of browning markers in adipose tissue in rodents. Twenty male Wistar rats were randomly divided into four groups: Control (C, 25 °C), Cold Exposure (CE, 4 °C), Swimming in tepid Water (STW, 30 °C), and Swimming in Cold Water (SCW, 15 °C). The swimming included 2-3 min intervals, 1 min rest, until exhaustion, three days a week for six weeks, with 3 to 6% of bodyweight overload. Rats from CE were exposed to cold for 2 h per day, five days per week. Aft…

Genomic Analyses Implicate the Amazon-Orinoco Plume as the Driver of Cryptic Speciation in a Swimming Crab.

The Amazon-Orinoco plume (AOP) is the world's largest freshwater and sediment discharge into the ocean. Previous studies limited to mtDNA suggest that the swimming crab Callinectes ornatus Ordway, 1863 exists as two distinct genetic clusters separated by the AOP. However, questions concerning migration, diversification time, and species delimitation are unresolved. Densely sampling markers across the genome (SNPs) could elucidate the evolutionary processes within this species. Here, we combined mtDNA data and ddRAD-seq to explore the diversification patterns and processes within the swimming c…

Effect of simultaneous testing of two mice in the tail suspension test and forced swim test.

In mouse studies, the results of behavioural experiments are greatly affected by differences in the experimental environment and handling methods. The Porsolt forced swim test and tail suspension test are widely used to evaluate predictive models of depression-like behaviour in mice. It has not been clarified how the results of these tests are affected by testing single or multiple mice simultaneously. Therefore, this study evaluated the differences between testing two mice simultaneously or separately. To investigate the effect of testing multiple mice simultaneously, the Porsolt forced swim

Multiple cholinesterase inhibitors have antidepressant-like properties in the mouse forced swim test.

There is high clinical interest in improving the pharmacological treatment of individuals with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). This neuropsychiatric disorder continues to cause significant morbidity and mortality worldwide, where existing pharmaceutical treatments such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors often have limited efficacy. In a recent publication, we demonstrated an antidepressant-like role for the acetylcholinesterase inhibitor (AChEI) donepezil in the C57BL/6J mouse forced swim test (FST). Those data added to a limited literature in rodents and human subjects which suggests

Exposure to disinfection by-products in swimming pools and biomarkers of genotoxicity and respiratory damage - The PISCINA2 Study.

BACKGROUND: Swimming in pools is a healthy activity that entails exposure to disinfection by-products (DBPs), some of which are irritant and genotoxic. OBJECTIVES: We evaluated exposure to DBPs during swimming in a chlorinated pool and the association with short-term changes in genotoxicity and lung epithelium permeability biomarkers. METHODS: Non-smoker adults (N = 116) swimming 40 min in an indoor pool were included. We measured a range of biomarkers before and at different times after swimming: trihalomethanes (THMs) in exhaled breath (5 min), trichloroacetic acid (TCAA) in urine (30 min)…

Neurochemical changes underlying schizophrenia-related behavior in a modified forced swim test in mice.

The modified forced swim test (MFST) has excellent predictive validity for investigating the antipsychotic activity of drugs, with particular emphasis on their activity toward negative symptoms of schizophrenia. However, its face and construct validity are less understood. Therefore, in the present study, some biochemical changes within GABAergic and serotonergic neurotransmission that could be related to observed MK-801-induced disturbances and the activity of compounds active at those neurotransmitters were investigated. In biochemical experiments, mice were treated acutely or chronically wi

Inhibition of the CRF1 receptor influences the activity of antidepressant drugs in the forced swim test in rats.

Hyperactivity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis (HPA) and impairment of the central corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) system are factors in the pathogenesis of depression. Though several antagonists of the CRF1 receptor were effective in the recognized behavioral tests for antidepressant activity, there is still little information on the potential interactions between CRF1 receptor inhibitors and conventional antidepressant therapy. The aim of our study was to assess the influence of SN003, a CRF1 receptor blocker, on the activity of imipramine and fluoxetine in the forced swim tes

Vancomycin Reduces Cell Wall Stiffness and Slows Swim Speed of the Lyme Disease Bacterium.

Borrelia burgdorferi, the spirochete that causes Lyme disease, is a tick-transmitted pathogen that requires motility to invade and colonize … over time, with a 40% reduction in the bending stiffness after 36 h. Under the same conditions, the swimming speed of wild-type B. burgdorferi slowed by ∼15%, with only marginal changes to cell morphology. Interestingly, our biophysical model for the swimming dynamics of B. burgdorferi suggested that cell speed should increase with decreasing cell stiffnes …
