Regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) was studied during an aggressive epidural bleed, using a ventilated swine model. rCBF, regional organ blood flow and cardiac output were measured using the radioactive microsphere technique. Blood flows were measured prior to the start of bleeding (Stage 1), when intracranial pressures had reached a plateau and supratentorial perfusion pressure was reduced by about 50% (Stage 2), and at isoelectric EEG (Stage 3). Extracorporeal shock waves generated with an electromagnetic lithotriptor of the second generation were administered to the gallbladder or bile ducts of 24 domestic piglets. In six animals, fresh human cholesterol gallstones were implanted into the gallbladder two weeks before shock wave administration. Treatment with 3,000 shock waves resulted in fragmentation of the majority of the gallstones in all six animals. Swine rotaviruses displaying distinctive electropherotypes were isolated from the feces of diarrheic piglets in two swine herds in the province of Buenos Aires, Argentina. In one case all samples isolated showed abnormal electropherotypes. All samples were classified as group A reactive when assayed by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Some cases of human cerebro-spinal meningitis associated with swine streptococcal infections were reported. Five piggery workers were involved. A 23 year old nursing mother and four male attendants suffered persistent headaches followed by stiffneck and what a physician diagnosed as meningitis and was treated in a hospital. Typical clinical signs of cold, mucopurulent catarrh with diarrhea and other symptoms were seen. Precautionary measures to be taken when swine encephalitis is suspected were also discussed.

Spontaneous glomerulonephritis was found in seven six-month-old littermates from a leukemic sow. Light microscopy of the glomerular lesions showed proliferation of the mesangial cells and increase of the mesangial matrix with deposition of homogeneous materials. A reproducible swine pneumonia model was developed, utilizing Pasteurella multocida (strain MSU 7) and a rapid endotracheal inoculating technique. The model provided a means of testing various factors, such as therapeutic agents that may influence the course of pulmonary pasteurellosis. In a series of experiments, 81 infected nonmedicated pigs had a morbidity of 96% and a mortality of 22%. The same computerized recording system as described in Part I of this publication (Flesjå & Ulvesœter 1979) was applied to sows slaughtered at Sentralslakteriet, Forus, Stavanger. In the three-year period 1975–1977 a total of 10,051 apparently healthy sows were brought to the abattoir. About 17 % of the carcasses had one or more pathological lesions. Two pigs that were necropsied had large esophagogastric ulcers, hepatic fibrosis with "milk spots" and swollen edematous lungs.
